I wanted Cohwert or Gruden at the time, proven winners, but I understand your point. No, I didn't know Payton had never been a head coach. I like his style.
It's Cowher... no "t" at the end. Both him and Gruden look awfully comfortable in their current gigs. Same goes for Tony Dungy and Jimmy Johnson. From what I hear, being a head coach in the NFL is really a GRIND. These guys are in the stadium/office around 5:30-6am during the season with very little extra-curricular or family time. Jimmy Johnson and Parcells are the only recent examples I can think of for coaches that decided to go BACK to the grind after getting a taste of the good life. I guess Joe Gibbs did so as well, but he never really took a lot of time off as his Nascar team was taking up much of his time. Once John Madden left coaching, he also never looked back. The longer these guys stay away from coaching, the less convinced I am that they really want back in. Even if they do, I'm sure they would have lost a certain "drive" that they once initially had... and if they're not really all that successful, they know its likely not worth it compared to their lifestyles as broadcasters. Probably why you will always see more college and coordinators get consideration over past ex-coaches who've not done much since leaving the game (unless they re-pay their dues as coordinators again).
They came out throwing on nearly every possesion of the second half. Again, you're confusing lack of execution with "being conservative"
Fun fact for everyone calling for Cower/Gruden: No coach has ever won a Superbowl with 2 different teams. Ever.
i cant believe people are buying that garbage bs of kubiak talking about being aggressive. he was not being aggressive. just because you throw instead of running the ball does not mean you are being aggressive. Kubiak is just trying to find a piss poor excuse/rationalization for that horrible play and pick six by schaub. Any fan that has a modicum of intelligence and perceptual ability knows that being aggressive isnt one of Kubiak's traits. We are talking about a head coach here who looks away at crucial field goal kicks. You guys cant be falling for that BS.
How about a full house cleaning, front office, coaching staff, starting QB, and all dead weight on the roster? That's what needs to happen if the Texans fail to make the playoffs.
No, that's what happens when teams don't make the playoffs after entering the league as an expansion team... and then somehow getting worse than the expansion team was (as the Texans bottomed out in 2006). Texans could make a change even if they do make the playoffs, but fail to go anywhere within it. The Bears have had success this year with a new coach, despite having a similar roster... hell, they were even a playoff team last year. Same for the Chiefs, who didn't throw away the entire roster despite being the worst team in the NFL last year. I will say that Rick Smith is tied with Kubiak. Schaub is tied to both of them, and will not outlast either of them. I doubt either Smith or Kubiak outlasts the other... once one goes, you gotta get rid of the other. Smith has never made a decision, draft pick, cut, or re-signing without the blessing (or recommendation) of Kubiak and/or Wade Phillips (who was instrumental in picking Watt, and shoring up the secondary). Rick Smith is more or less the liaison between Bob McNair and Kubiak (letting him know what he can or cannot spend... and taking Gary's recommendations on guys he wants to be kept long-term...ie, Schaub extension).
Yeah, count me in the boat that doesnt see "passing" as being aggressive. A 3 yard route is no different than attempting a run. Aggressive means taking a shot down field...or at least, throwing the ball passed the first down marker. Graham was a running mismatch for them...Hopkins is awesome in one on one situations...Throwing the ball 5-7 yards down field is not an aggressive play. Aggressive is the TD pass to Graham. Aggressive is a 15-20 yard pass.
Texans lose a first rd playoff game I'd consider it until then no way. Guy has done a fantastic job building the organization up through the draft. Two division titles, two playoff wins. Relax.
Tomlin had no HC experience, when he took the Steelers. Most of the coaches doesnt have HC experience, but you got to take a chance, they have to start somewhere. but anyways I agree with the OP, Get Rid of Kubiak!! He only has one gameplan, if it works, then good, but if its not working, he doesnt know how to change it.
I don't agree with the reasoning, but if the team decides to draft the QB of the future soon, Kubiak probably needs to be gone first. If not, Kubiak is going to draft "his guy." And if Kubiak continues to not pan out (unfortunately likely) he'll be gone soon enough, leaving "his guy" as the team's QB of the future. And then the cycle continues...
