I don't think any of us ever though Schaub was a great QB, but a lot of us, myself included, thought given the spectacular quality of this team, he could be a safe game manager who could make throws when called upon. Worse QB's than him have gone to the SB. But something changed yesterday, he not only isn't safe, he has become this teams biggest danger, even bigger than the opponents. Not a Yates or Keenum fan, but I'm for any alternative at this point.
It's a shame. We, the fans have once again been held hostage to an owner's misguided loyalty/whims. The consistent underachievement of his team has for years been tied to Kubiak and Schaub. Now, we are threatened with losing any window due to the hard headed good ole boys philosophy. The apologists/propaganda machine is silent as even they cannot pull an excuse out of their collectivearsel. This is an affliction we as diehard Houston fans have suffered through in multiple sports. And, while it appears the Rockets are about to take us for a ride because of DM, I fear this to be the exception rather than the norm.
The thing is that he hasn't changed any. He is the same player he was when he was putting up all those stats. The problem now is that we have a better team the past couple yrs, and have goals of winning the Superbowl. So his flaws are now being magnified. I root for Schaub because I'm a Texan fan, and if he does well that most likely means my team is doing well. But the writing is on the wall and has been there since he got here. The crazy thing is he will have a couple good games in a row, where he throws a couple TD's without any INT's and all will be forgotten.
I'm not in Schaub's fan club but do strongly believe he should be given a FULL season b4 evaluating him. It sounds like several of you here and around the city are throwing in the towel. There are still 12 games yet to be played, fire him if we miss the play-offs due to his play and not while the season is young.
YUUUUUP... give him a full season, its not like none of this stuff has ever happened in the first 6 years hes been here.its all about yesterday this is all new territory..
Matt Schaub nearly made me cry yesterday, and I'm not even a Texans fan. I had them on the moneyline. Thought it was money in the bank. FML.
Seconded... up until the end of last year I really did think he could get the team to the SB.. but the debacle at the end of last year and the start of this year has made a lot of people lose confidence in him... I'll still support the guy and hope that he can get back to the Schaub of old when we had the turrible defense. Every year without fail, it seems there's something or another wrong with this team.. why have you forsaken us, Football Gods?!?!
He's exceeded expectations based on what he is, here are 2 2004 draft evaluations that have been right POSITIVES: Competitive signal-caller best in the short or intermediate passing game. Quickly sets up on the pocket, patient and buys time. Good field awareness, knows where his receivers are on the field and takes a hit in order to get the pass off. Zips the ball into the seam, accurate on the crossing patterns and puts touch on throws when necessary. NEGATIVES: Cannot escape the rush or make throws on the move. Lacks the pinpoint pass placement and loses accuracy the further out to the flanks he is asked to throw the ball. Lacks a big league arm and not accurate with the deep pass. ANALYSIS: An efficient signal-caller that plays within himself, Schaub has a nice feel for the position and makes good decisions in the pocket. Has limitations but should fit in nicely as a third-stringer. PROJECTION: Late Fifth Round Positives: Matt Schaub has terrific size, strength, and a decent arm. He is an accurate passer (especially underneath) has a good release, and leads his receivers well. He has the ability to find the second receiver and he reads defenses well. Negatives: His footwork is inconsistent, but can be polished with good coaching. He lacks speed and mobility, and will not buy much time with his feet. He does not throw well on the run. Strictly a pocket passer. Projection: Although he does not possess a cannon for an arm, Schaub's size and adequate arm are attractive enough for someone to take a shot at him in the third round. I don't see him being any better than a career backup in the NFL.
Anyone thinking Yates or Keenum can't step in help us win need to remember what happened when Kaepernick did last year. He was a no name and he transformed their offense!
This right here is where I fundamentally disagree with what I can only assume is the vast majority of Schaub bashers. He is *not* the same QB. This is, for him, uncharted territory. Here are Schaub’s numbers in the previous 54 games before his 4-game slide to end last year: 1,205/1,862 (65%) 14,681 YDS 89 TDs/42 INTs 7.9 YPA 95.3 QBR 33-21 W/L (and that includes a 6-10 season in which he tried to carry a historically bad defense) And here are his numbers since (regular season only): 200/308 (65%) 2,139 YDS 9 TDs/9 INTs 6.9 YPA 82.7 QBR 3-5 W/L You can dismiss those previous numbers (’09 through the first 12 games of ’12) all you want as hollow – whatever. But there is absolutely, positively no denying that he is playing *decidedly worse* during this current stretch. He’s on pace to throw 24 INTs this year. In his previous 42 starts, he threw 30 combined. To say he hasn’t changed any… I mean, it defies reality.
Not exactly a no name. He was taken in the 2nd round hand picked by Harbaugh. Yates is a 5th round pick and Keenum an undrafted free agent.
Utterly prophetic, this is exactly who he still is. Yates took the team to its first playoff game. Stop and think of that. All the hopes and dreams of Texan's fans are on a projected "career backup" QB. Keenum likely has more upside. He isn't even dressed for the games.
Yeah, include him. I don't argue with the Steelers paying him at the time they did. But the days of rewarding middle of the road QB's with huge contracts may soon be over. They're hamstringing their teams. The emerging quarterbacks are locked into small contracts. The elite quarterbacks can win games single-handedly. The middle of the road guys wind up hamstringing their team.
Never hated Schaub, but felt/posted as far back as 2009 that the system and receiving corps made him look good more than the other way around. His underthrows and habit to fail to lead his receiver have been apparent for years. He made up for it with an excellent playaction fake and decision making. I was mildly hopeful that last year's winter nosedive might have come from some undisclosed arm/shoulder overexertion injury tied to the Jax/Detroit double header (103 attempts, a number he doesn't typically get to across 3 game stretches). Unfortunately, it's looking more and more apparent that he's gone Brad Lidge on us. Kubiak won't make the move unless an injury forces him out, but the front office leaking to the Chron their out option on his contract suggests that Rick Smith might take this out of Kubiak's hands in February or March. Despite Andre Johnson's claim to the contrary, the facial expressions and body language from yesterday absolutely suggests that there are players getting fed up with Bad Schaub (Foster being #1). Rick Dennison is clearly not okay with him either. I don't know, you don't know, no one knows what Yates or Keenum could offer the team right now. You're playing very long odds that either one of them could right the offense and have a Kaepernick season. However, you can't keep riding someone this spotty, either. The cold truth is, there's virtually no precedent for a physically average QB to devolve into a basketcase for this long and magically figure it out and float back to being a top 10 caliber guy. Making matters worse, opponents are figuring him out. Schaub under duress is a bottom ten QB. They're using that more and more, especially as defenses around the league are being rebuilt for a pass-heavy era. It's a bad situation either way you go. But if we are looking at what Schaub's play will continue to be the rest of the year, it's a lost season anyway. Again, I've got no idea what level Yates or Keenum are at right now behind the scenes. Kubiak wouldn't, but I would definitely think it's time to test those waters (run them more first team at practice, consider a move a the bye, etc)
