The way to fix this is to demote teams to AAA level for being bad. And the only way back is yo win at the AAA. where it is a privelege to play in front of a mahor league baseball stadium. And if a team is in the abyss of AAA competition, they arent allowed a top 3 draft pick. Highest they can pick is number 4. I know that this keeps soccer teams all over the world competive. Be lousy and risk league demotion.
This. If you know you have no shot at the playoffs why be stuck on the mediocrity treadmill just to appease a few whining fans and media hacks? I absolutely love that the Astros took the pragmatic approach and made damn sure they were going to get the top pick. A knowledgable fan is much more excited following the progress of the Springers, Correas, and Appels than just watching some middling .500 club. What I really don't understand about this outcry is that the Astros are somehow gaming the system. The Astros are EARNING their talent by suffering through three dismal seasons. Unlike teams like the Yankees or Red Sox who just buy a playoff ticket nearly every year by outspending everyone.
Metro and media market aren't the same because Houston is the fifth largest metro, but only ninth or tenth overall media market. It is the number six radio market, which better correlates with the size of an area than tv.
Metro/Media used to correlate pretty well... because they are both largely based on population of surrounding area. Not too long ago, Houston was 9th or 10th Metro size... but has grown substantially. Shouldn't be long before the # of TV viewers in Houston comes close to its rising metro size.
Media markets are typically larger. Like san Fran and Oakland is one metro and san Jose is the other, but they are one media market. Same thing with dc and Baltimore, nyc area, southern California, etc. Houston has been larger than Atlanta since like 1940 but Atlanta still has a larger tv market. Houston will move up a little, but its going to take a while to match its metro number because areas above it are growing fast too (not as fast as Houston, but fast enough).
Sure. Houston definitely is growing, and unfortunately it won't reflect in the media #'s until the newly inhabited suburbs are fully vested. I do expect them to pass Atlanta and DC in the upcoming years. Most of the other large media markets possess areas that are already established, secondary to the main metro hub. Houston really doesn't have that luxury (besides Beaumont). Anything they get is due to the primary city's expansion, which certainly takes time to show up in the media market #'s.
Well 51 wins in today's Baseball is really very BAD. Good thing is the Astros as a sport franchise is as bad and has hit rock bottom as it could get. Silver lining a very deep 2014 MLB draft plus a consensus Number one pick. Not only do the Astros have the first pick but they get to pick first in every rd and they have 2 first rd picks. They have a record to spend on draft picks this year around 13.6 million for their first 11 picks and have 41 total picks. No more 1 overall picks anytime soon for the Astros let's just hope. 70 win season next year is a Nice improvement. 2015&2016 is years where Astros could problaby make the playoffs.

I love the Astros and have been in favor of the total rebuild. Why do you think we could improve by 19 games next year though?
The way they finish 65 games is more lily. I just think they went FULL tank mode. Plus they lost like alot of one run games. Improve the bullpen and having Springer will make the Astros win at least 65 games.
Draft order has been finalized. Astros' first 5 picks: 1 (1st), 33 (supplemental 1st), 39 (2nd), 75 (3rd), 106 (4th). Then, add 30 for the next 35 rounds.
The 33, 39, and maybe 75 picks will change depending on where free agents with qualifying offers sign.
