If it's the bootleg you're talking about...they don't run it anywhere near as much so I think they realize it too.
Foster isn't as scary as he used to be unfortunately. If he's not busting out 30+ yard runs then why sell out on the run? I mean they are worried about him but surely not like they used to be.
How did Kubiak become Dom Capers over the years I'm not sure? And this guy is supposed to be this offensive mind guru? Kubiak reminds me a lot of the Norv Turner situation in San Diego, it took them years and years to finally realizing that they had to let him go. They wasted a lot of LT's and other talented players years on that bum. It seems like The Texans are doing the same, we have a talented squad but a mediocre coach. He either needs to change the QB or get another guy here who becomes the OC and let him call the plays.
pretty much. foster is not explosive and going to bust for huge yards with this o-line. defense can afford a player to just focus on shaub only
Doesn't matter. The play action worked when we didn't even have a remotely legit running threat. The year Schaub threw for 4,770, Slaton was our leading rusher with a little over 400 yards and we were PA and bootlegging all over the place and teams were falling for it. Anyway, it the play action or bootleg really not working or was it just Seattle? I seem to remember it being fine in the other games.
i said this during game day. but it still comes down to a tony romoesque performance put on by schaub in the second half. You go fetal on that play like you do 99% of the time; you just don't throw it on who is considered to be the best cornerback in the game now. don't be a hero, schaubertski! Reminds me of the beginning of the new england game during prom, when he had foster with real estate infront of him but instead wanted to hit the home run. no pick six and we win! simple as that. AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHhhhh such a brilliant performance by the oline wasted. win five in a row like in 2011 and all is forgiven. ok, i can't get over it. Why do you throw the ball!
It matters a ton. I think a lot of that had to do with how new it was for the team and personel. Opposing defenses pretty much see it coming now, so you have to legit fool them. When Foster is on the offense is near unstoppable. But he has to be scarier than a occasional 8 yard run. The RB has to seem unstoppable himself for it to be really effective. Also though Matt was a lot more mobile then, I know there is this theory that he has lost all of his mobility (and he never had much) after his foot surgery. But the RB has to be more than a 8yd threat...Otherwise why bite on it? If you are worried about the run and they fake it you bite on the run, the safety bites, and the WRs are open for a deep pass. The problem with the bootleg is much like a screen...either it works and it does pretty well...or it looks terrible because the defense has seen it all before. So I remember a bunch of people saying that Peyton wouldn't be good for this offense because he's not mobile enough to run out of the pocket and such...but now Schaub can barely do that and he CAN'T throw on the run at all so...I'm not sure how much longer Kubes can stick with this guy.
This has been a problem for Kubiak's whole tenure with the Texans. They consistently rank higher in yardage than scoring, for whatever reason - and often by wide margins.
did everybody else in the nfl stop using play action? are we the only ones left using it? smdh. The problem isnt the play action, Its the coach calling it at predictable times and a QB who is totally incompetent physically and mentally.
Bootleg works at times; SEA was just ready. Some squads do well, some don't. TEN was horrid against it, for example. Like Tony Dungy said Sunday: Coach trusts him to not make mistakes.
The Texans aren't working anymore. Its not just the play action but the entire team and organization.
Talk about being predictable on the bootlet/rollout play calling. Here is Seattle Times article on the Sherman interception. http://seattletimes.com/html/seahawks/2021929217_shermansidebar30xml.html
It is very easy if you eliminate the bootleg you eliminate that deep ball which is the only way Shaub can generate enough power on his throw since he can't do it in a normal seven step drop back.
Quinn noticed on film that Houston liked to roll out Schaub off play action in short-yardage situations, then have him quickly dump the ball in the flat. So when the Texans faced a third-and-four with about three minutes left, Quinn dialed up a play designed specifically to thwart that.
Yes, and its not like it takes a rocket scientist to figure out how we call plays. We are the most conservative team on earth. Run, run, play action, punt, then pass, run, run, punt, followed by the inevitable run, pass, run, punt or fg. Our offense is boring and predictable. This has been known by the NFL for years. We use to get by on it because we had a serviceable offensive line. Well, we our offensive line is garbage now so our playcalling.... even if predictable cannot possibly move the ball down the field with any consistency. Our QB is garbage, our receivers and TE's are garbage. But most importantly, Kubiak is garbage as he's always been since coming here.
It's not surprising. Screens and bootlegs are the same in that if the defense knows it's coming then it lokos pretty predictable. They ONLY work if the defense is fooled, even if you execute it right if the defense sees it coming it's going to look bad. QB should NEVER float it there though. NEVER, throwing it out to the flats like that always spells trouble and pick 6...
