I think Richards was fortunate... she was a likable candidate that also drew the sympathy of voters from a roough primary, and the GOP candidate was pretty flaky and made a number of mistakes. And even with that, Richards won a close race. Then lost against Bush. I think the redness of the larger portion of Texas, aided greatly by a redistricting will make it really difficult for any Democrat to win here unless the GOP candidate is way way out there on the nut scale.
