Where do you think that tax money goes when we spend it to feed the poor?

No, the F22 costs less! Crazy huh? Not only that, you only have to buy the F22 fleet once! Thanks for pointing this out, I didn't know we spent nearly this much .

Ah, yes, and then we could round up all of the libertarians and conservatives and re-educate them. We could call the facilities used in this effort "Re-education Camps". Has a nice ring to it. And then All will be peace and love.

Why hasn't anyone thought of this before? Sounds like a great idea!

    Freaking "liberals". Totalitarians in disguise.

The F-35 is at $323 billion and counting. Add up all the different military planes and then let's compare.

Eh, no. I was speaking to valuing weapons over feeing the poor. Your way is just as pathetic though. Lets buy more fighters! They're cheaper than feeding the poor! Yay!

The first prototype for the F35 was built in 2003 which is included in your cost. This food stamp thing happens EVERY SINGLE YEAR. Cray cray huh?

Turns out, comparing the entire military budget to these entitlement programs isn't even a contest. Never knew that, informative thread. Rep to op.

Not just cheaper, but WAY CHEAPER. Poor Americans are the most obese people on the planet, do they really need 80 billion dollars of food. What corporations are making us force feed these people? Probably Monsanto or Israel. Bastards.

Jesus Christ poor Americans are obese because the food they eat is unhealthy, yet for most people a cheap meal at McDonalds is the only thing they can afford.

Do we really need food for the poor? Is that your question? Not, why do we need billions of dollars in fighters jets to police the world? Or why is our military budget larger than the next several countries combined?

So, let's call it ~$30 billion a year for the last decade, for a plane that's still under development. The Republicans are planning to save $40 billion by gutting the one program that gets food to very poor children in this country. SNAP benefits are already highly limited—it's not like they're cutting out fat here. They're taking food from the most vulnerable children in our society. But by all means, let's keep the fighter. It seems really necessary.

Why don't you reduce the crap language coming out of your mouth and try some civility for a change. And toss the "roll-eyes" into a dumpster. You are using them so much that the emoticon has no meaning. My personal preference would be to toss that emoticon into the trash. Your "moronic" and insulting language would be a good addition. There is no need for it and it lessens whatever points you are trying to make. In my humble opinion.

McDonalds is way more expensive than much more healthy meals. Stick to the current discussion, why are we spending more on food stamps than needed security programs.

You can't even buy fast food with food stamps dude. Read the article already, geez.

FYI, we spend about $80 billion a year on food stamps, and about $1,700 billion on the military.

Michigan, Arizona, California and Florida all allow people to use food stamps at fast food restaurants. Yes, that is only four states, but nearly all of the states allow people to use food stamps at gas stations and convenience stores, which sell cheap, unhealthy food that is akin to the food sold at fast food restaurants.

Personally, I don't see a lot of grocery stores in the poorest neighborhoods. Where do you propose people buy food if fast food is what's on every corner?

Well the attempted defense of cutting food aid to primarily to the poor was not very successful by tallanover, commodore and bigtexx et al.

They tried to show that food stamps going up in the middle of the greatest recession in 75 years would go up forever and had to resort to cutting off the final part of the graph showing the rate declining as the economy improves.

You had outrage about any claim that cutting food stamps was against Christianity by claiming that it was Christian bashing to mention this.

You had the argument that it is against their freedom to have their tax dollars go to feed the poor when they don't want it to.

I don't thing I missed any other argument raised by the defenders of this cruelty.

Not very impressive. Just mean spirited.

Thanks for the info. I learned something about the present food stamp program I did not know. It is very rare on this board to have anyone who has actually worked in public services, like I have. This is one of the reasons why they are so susceptible to right wing and libertarian spin on these issues. Though I work with poor folks daily as a lawyer, it has been over 25 years since I worked as a food stamp and welfare case worker.

However, you draw the wrong conclusion to your facts when you try to blame both Republicans and Democrats.

The House Republicans are trying to prevent certain states (ha ha states rights !) from having more liberal exemptions to the ABAWD status requirements. Many of these states that do so are in areas of higher than normal unemployment. The result is still according to the reports that 4,000,000 folks thrown off whether they are from Texas or many other states or not. It is still hard hearted whether they are not from Texas and many other states or not.

The Republican Party, awesome slogans but no answers to real problems.
