Yes, it's very very sad that people no longer care what judgmental strangers like you think about them. Heartbreaking.

No-brainer survey is obvious. It's generational though; this kind of thinking will become more and more antiquated as the years pass. Until then, get used to wearing long sleeves, enter the trade or art industry or start your own company.

Asked one of my hr people and she said she most likely won't hire someone who doesn't even bother covering up a tatt for an interview (assuming it's cover-able in a typical business attire).

You're good as long as a dress shirt or polo can cover them. I'm surprised to see how many men and women have tattoos since our new building has a gym.

JunkyardDwg, I didn't think I had to explain why it's a bad example, but I would like to assume teachers shouldn't do things to lead kids to believe that's an accepted thing to do at their age. It's just like teachers shouldn't talk about drinking alcohol, religion, or politics.
Any new employer is a 'stranger', aren't they? Did you even read the results of the survey? Relax, I don't think I'll ever have to hire you.

Is it discrimination, though, judgmental decisions, or just business as usual to not hire someone who has visible tattoos or body piercings? I believe that as a professional or in a corporate world, you should not have them.

Look at slide 4, too, which talks about education. THEN take a look at the advice on slide 9.

I get the feeling that a lot of you didn't read ALL the information provided in all the slides and still have personal feelings into it.

    Here's an infographic:

My wife has several (feminine) tattoos and has been a teacher for 14 years. She's been teacher of the year for 2 different districts and every year has parents BEGGING her to take their kids because they hear about her reputation from other parents/kids. She's the only teacher in the school with a 'waiting list'. LOL.

These days, there are more people WITH tattoos than without. Which is why I will never get one. That's how I express my individuality. :)

By the way, I was wondering why this thread was so long.....then I saw who started it....

That % slide is total bull****. I'm in IT and Government and the % is much, much higher than 8%-9%.

Edit- I went back and read the article. Did you write this biased tripe, Swoly? Utter hogwash. I've never wanted thread rating or up/down voting in this forum more.

Sure. I wrote it... because I have time to be surveying people...

'Course, I didn't, man. I just posted it because I thought I'd show stuff we had talked about before, and there's now lots of evidence to support it.
    Link?

Just another way we compartmentalize and discriminate during the hiring process. It's a tricky subject because if you're a corporate manager and you have studies showing causality between the visibility of tattoos and customer dissatisfaction, you have to act.

Thanks for your opinion. Just gotta say though, I have many, all hidden except for my ring finger and my wrist, but that one's covered up by my large watches. I actually had a coworker comment on it two weeks ago saying she didn't know I had it and I've worked with her for 5 years. I also guarantee that I'm doing pretty good in life, as a professional in the corporate world as mine are hidden beneath my work attire. Even if they weren't, I can guarantee I would still have been hired. The tattoo culture is everywhere now, it's not even the evil sailor thing any longer, it's almost become passe.

I have a question about salary.com's salary figures. I looked up the numbers for my job, and salary.com reports that I'm making about 30 percent more than the top people in my position. Are their numbers accurate? I find it hard to believe since I feel like I'm still underpaid.
