Aren't we all Rockets scientists? Why else would we be wasting our time on this board talking about "Rockets"?

Are you sure he could become a rocket scientist if he wanted to? I mean, ok, he went to Harvard, but he studied economics. Not exactly the cutting edge of scientific genius.

The rocket would struggle because of the Miami heat.

The harm is that stereotypes are generalizations which are often wrong, with the result that people often suffer unjustly from prejudice. "Black people are good at sports." Do you consider that a simple compliment?

Maybe the "Asian brain" or "Harvard nerd" stereotype actually hurt Lin's perceived value in the NBA draft.

If Lin gets to enjoy this supposedly non-negative stereotype, then what does that mean for the rest of his teammates? They're less intelligent?

What if Lin doesn't want to be a rocket scientist/"brain"?

You ask if I have ever felt offended/slighted by being considered intelligent. Are you familiar with a thing called high school? Being considered intelligent sure was not a social asset back then! Nowadays, if someone says "You're so smart," I feel the same as if they had said "You're so tall."

While not all asians are necessarily intelligent, stereotyping someone from Harvard as intelligent is a pretty reasonable thing to do. Even the dumb guys at Harvard are pretty damn smart compared to the rest of the world.

Saying that, it is unlikely that Jeremy was actually Harvard level for his academics. He was recruited for basketball, but was smart enough to pass the standards of Harvard and ended up with an ok GPA for an ivy-league basketball player.

Also this thread is simply making for of other threads in the GARM....and it is pretty funny.

Jeremy maintained a GPA of 4.2 at Palo Alto High School, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jeremy_Lin.
