This is the former Disney kid who likes to stick out her tongue, right? Who cares? Ms. Cyrus just might be a reflection of the nation's collective boredom.

If a Black girl was dancing like this, not many would care, it wouldn't make the news. But if a White girl does it, everyone goes crazy.... WTF America ?

Wow! I hate Bob Dylan but she nailed that song. I guess I never paid attention to her before but she has a really nice voice when she wants to use it.

I don't understand the whole twerping thing but maybe that's an indictment of my age more than anything else. I thought the wrecking ball song was actually decent even if the video is pretty far out there. At the end of the day she seems like someone who will probably reinvent herself multiple times, kind of like Madonna did. I remember watching Madonna in the early 80s and thinking WTF?! Now people think nothing about it and even consider her talented.

At the end of the day I'm apparently not as offended by Miley as some and I actually think she has a fair bit of talent if not an over active imagination to go along with it. She is young and wants to express herself in her way and she has the stage and means to do it.

Funny, I thought it was a remarkable improvement over the hard to listen to, nasally, overhyped Bob Dylan.

I grew up with Dylan and was convinced that he completely conned a generation into thinking that his music was this very complex poetic style music with some hidden meaning that was as important as the creation of the universe itself. Mostly though, I always thought Bob was just throwing words on a wall to see what rhymed.

I guess it's obvious that I'm not a Bob Dylan fan.

after listening to her cover of that Bob Dylan song and Dolly Parton's Jolene the girl has enough talent not to resort to cheap attention whoring antics. i think her voice is suited very well for country.

It's call twerking and it's been out for like 10 yrs. She didn't reinvent crap and this Madonna comparison, I have idea where people are getting this from. No idea...

Twerking , twerping.... It shows how much I know about it, nothing.

As far as the Madonna comparisons are concerned, it stems from the fact that what a lot of people are saying about Miley now they were saying this about Madonna in the early 80s. No talent, skinny white girl, attention w****, both doing things in music videos that people considered shocking, out there and unacceptable.

I don't know how old you are or if you have any knowledge of the controversy surrounding "Like A Virgin", "Pappa Don't Preach" and "Erotica". And then there was the picture book she made "sex". Madonna was all about doing what people thought was crazy and unacceptable back in the day. Now a lot of that stuff is considered art and Madonna is viewed as someone that was cutting edge and before her time.

I'm guessing that 20 years from now if Miley proves to have longevity like Madonna then this stuff she is doing now will be considered cutting edge and just one phase of her career.

I don't think there is much comparison between their music, but the reception from society towards the early stage of their respective careers is very similar.

    1) It's been around for way longer than that. It only recently got a name.

    2) Considering how MC did it, I'd say "twerping" is more accurate.

Madonna was extremely hot back in the day, on another level from this girl. Miley is attractive by normal standards, but I don't think anyone prefers her look now compared to the first pics in this thread.

It all seems so forced and tacky, not to mention her music really sucks. People like Gaga and Madonna actually produce catchy pop music.

I don't think it was that controversial, it's not like the 1920s when sound in films was first introduced and people were getting seizures or anything like that. Back in the 80s not everyone had cable, no internet and stuff like MTV reached a broader audience a lot slower than what you would get in today's standard. it's not like they haven't seen anything like that before. In actuality it was quite tame what Madonna did, in my eyes at the very least. The media probably fabricated and exaggerated everything like they always did. Madonna was awesome in the 80s, and she stuck with her specific genre. Miley is cross breeding other genres or tries to. Other artist like her have done what she is doing now but with better music.

It's all about taste, and that is very subjective. I have never found Madonna attractive, I think Miley is much much prettier than Madonna although neither of them are my type. Lady Gaga is just plain ugly. Once again those are just my opinions.

Madonna was exceptionally controversial. When Madonna came out almost everyone either had MTV or had access to MTV through friends. Certainly nothing in the 80s compares to the Internet or You Tube but cable was pretty wide spread by the early 80s. Time has a way of softening the blow and altering perception. A lot of people were highly critical of Madonna, much like they are of Miley now.

Madonna had videos that were so controversial that they were banned on MTV. Papa Don't Preach in particular caused controversy because of the subject matter. The same was even more true with "Like a Prayer" which was maybe even more controversial than all of her other videos. As it was even condemned by the Vatican.

You really need to understand the time and what was considered acceptable back then to really understand how contaversial Madonna was. Miley has yet to do anything as controversial as some of Madonna's stuff but a lot of the reason for that is the time we live in. Madonna made what Miley is doing today less controversial then what it would otherwise be.
