Hell, I ate lunch and still want to hunt him down ... The comparison I'd love for people to do is among the brisket at the following places : Snow's Franklin La Barbecue J Mueller's (or whatever he's calling his location this week) I've only been to Snow's and Franklin once each and haven't been to the other two, but will soon hopefully. Also wondering if the brisket at Franklin and La Barbecue are similar since the guy at La Barbecue was from Franklin and trained for a bit with Mueller.
I'd rank them as - Franklins Snows John mueller (his beef rib is amazing FYI) La BBQ This is based on multiple trips to each spread over a few years. Everyone has good and bad days but snows and franklins are the best to me.
Currently in line at Pecan Lodge after a co-worker let me try a sample of the brisket yesterday. I got here when it opened but I may be too late. Line is ridiculous.
I had Killen's in Pearland Saturday and all I have to say is WOW Beef ribs were incredible; brisket was good too but the meat on the ribs just fell off the bone. Waited in line for 1 hour 40 minutes but it was worth it.
I thought that they only had BBQ for a few hours a day on Saturdays. Edit: Nevermind, you clearly said Saturday.
This. I was also there on Saturday, by the time I got up to the front they only had brisket and pork ribs left. They were excellent, I'll definitely be back on Saturday (early) to try the beef ribs.
Headed to the DFW area the weekend of 9/20. What time would we need to get to Pecan Lodge on that Friday? Or any other recommendations in the area? Anyone been to Del Norte Tacos in Godley? I stumbled across the name when searching the Texas Monthly top 50.
I haven't been on a Friday, but mid-week if you're there by 10:30, you'll get to eat. If you want tacos, you don't need to drive all the way out there, hit up Fuel City. http://www.fuelcitywash.com/tacos.html Seriously. And make sure you get some corn from the lady with the cart by the front door. If you want really good stuff in a tortilla that's not really a taco there's a Torchy's across 75 from SMU on SMU Blvd. If you like fried chicken and don't mind driving, you want Babe's Chicken Dinner House. They've got 9 locations so, it'll depend on where you're staying. It's family style so, you won't go home hungry. Burgers? Goff's on Hillcrest across from SMU.
Not that I considered it among the best BBQ in the area, but what happened to the County Line on Cutten Also, wasn't there a second/newer location somewhat near there?
How long was the wait if you got there at 10:30? I don't think we can make it until 11. Thanks for the rest of the info, but I meant BBQ places in the area. Babe's is definitely on the list.
See I work right down the street from Franklin's and that's part of their act is that they don't make enough brisket. They do it on purpose so as to maintain this appearance of exclusivity that makes people line up at 8am. Other than that their food is real good. I am not that much into standing in line for food so Franklin's kind of loses to Stubbs in that regard. Stubbs is better than Rudy's IMO.
Whoa, really? Stubb's? There's never a line at Ruby's either, but that doesn't make it "better" than Franklin. The line and refusal to address demand at Franklin is aggravating, but you've left out a large list of places that fill out the Franklin-to-Stubbs spectrum.
Such as John Mueller Meat Co. and LA BBQ, both of which have somewhat similar styles to the way Franklin's does brisket.
I've never been to Pecan Lodge, but it's been on my list forever. It's considered to be some of the best bbq in the state and probably the only one in he DFW area that can hang with the typical Central Texas bbq joints. When I went to Franklin BBQ, I chatted with Aaaron Franklin and he asked me if I had ever been there and said they do good bbq - so there's a recommendation of sorts, I guess. Never been to Del Norte, but from looking at their website, I'm somewhat interested. Seems like a place that would serve barbacoa. I'll put it on my list for the future. lol. If you want a place that, when they're on, the brisket is just about as good as Central Texas BBQ, check out Lockhart Smokehouse : http://www.lockhartsmokehouse.com . It's less than 5 miles from Pecan Lodge. It's owned by a member of the same family that owns Kreuz Market in Lockhart and they have Kreuz sausage, too. The problem with Lockhart Smokehouse is that I've been there 3 times and the first time, the brisket was unreal. The second 2 times, it was good-but-not-great, so they may be inconsistent. This was several months ago, though, so maybe they've gotten better. If you're in the North Dallas area, you can try 3 Stacks Smoke & Taphouse for ribs : http://www.3stacksbbq.com/ . The brisket is good-but-not-great. They also have beef ribs if you're into that. They can be kinda pricey, though, and they're way north of where Pecan Lodge is.
NP. If you go to 3 Stacks, try the baby back ribs - the ribs are what the place is known for. There's also a Rudy's BBQ (same chain as in Austin/Houston) in the Frisco area. Randy White's is also in Frisco, but the one time I tried it, I didn't care for it. Then I recalled how much I hate the Cowboys and never went back. There are other BBQ joints in that Pecan Lodge area that have a good reputation, but I've never eaten at like Mike Anderson's and Off the Bone Barbecue, . If anyone recommends Sonny Bryan's, don't go. If anyone recommends Dickey's, shoot them and then don't go. I noticed you said Babe's is on your list. I don't know where you're staying, but there's also a Babe's in Frisco. The interior is loud as hell, though. Quite possibly the loudest/echo-y barn of a restaurant I've been in. Good fried chicken and chicken fried steak, though - actually some of the best you'll find in the DFW area which is why it's got a religious following.
My wife grew up in the area so she is well versed in Babe's. I've only been once, but it's the meal I'm most looking forward to next weekend. Not to derail, but are you aware of anywhere good to watch Texans up in Frisco? We're staying at the Westin Stonebriar.
Technically this is California BBQ since I now live in Sacramento, but I just got an offset firebox form my Brinkman- and promptly smoked the best bbq chicken I've ever had. Very happy.
Can't help you on the Texans football since DFW is pretty much Cowboys Country. It probably doesn't help that the Cowboys are moving their headquarters and training facilities to Frisco, either. In the same parking lot as 3 Stacks, there's a Hooters that often runs multiple games. There's also a BW3 in Frisco that may have Texans games on (big screens!).
