I wished more people took a different approach to this advice. You always hear athletes give different variations of the "if you give it your all, it will happen" speech, but the reality is there are so many other variables at play than just effort. There are so many people who gave it their all and failed, while so many others hardly tried and succeeded. I would say, life ain't fair. You don't always get back what you put into something, so just have a back up plan or two, just in case, and you'll be ok regardless.

Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.

You get more car for your money if you buy used.

You want people to use up 50% of their lives sleeping? There is probably not a single person who is both happy and highly successful who gets 12 or more hours of sleep a night every night.

Try to make your life how you want it to be and don't worry about what others are doing.

The more you worry about what others are doing, the less time you are spending doing what you want to be doing.

Don't expect anything. Give it all to the moment and you WILL reap the rewards.

My advice is NOT to look on message boards for advice. You're just asking for trouble or for a good laugh at your expense.

It's interesting how a lot of the advice people are citing are from their dads and it makes me wonder how many of them listened to that advice when they were younger. As I get older I find that I understand a lot more what my dad was telling me when I was a kid and wish that I hadn't been such a dumb self-absorbed kid so his advice could've helped me earlier.

Here are somethings that he said that I find now to be very helpful. You have to work hard and be disciplined in life because you can't always count on luck. When luck does present itself you should be prepared to take advantage of it ("Success" is when preparation meets opportunity). You should always be able to plan a few moves ahead no matter what you do.

In addition to my dad though I have gotten some great advice from some other sources particularly from Martial Arts. Martial Arts isn't about mastering your opponent, your weapon or your art but about mastering yourself. The highest level of success in martial arts is where your actions become unthinking and are appropriate to the circumstance. In my club we call this getting rid of "too many mind" and what it means is that you have to train yourself to the point where when the opening presents itself you can execute the technique without conscious thoughts of the individual action. This would be like being able to hit a 94 MPH fastball since if you had to think about each motion of your body to swing an put the ball into play it would be too late. This is also what is meant by Zen, and in a Zen state all actions are done that way.

Buddhism has taught me that moderation in all things is good and that regret is an illusion that causes suffering. Also that we should embrace both the good and bad in life and look for the possibility of both in all beings.

Professionally one of my first bosses told me to "Never get sued and never trust contractors." which I find more true as my career advances.

Finally the best advice I got from friends was "Womens is evil".

Repped. I was going to post that along with "more money, more problems."

Every nicer car or house that you purchase has its army of higher costs to own and maintain. It continues with all that you buy except for education. Which bring me to...

    1) "Knowledge is power." - parents
Focusing on education was the best advice I've ever received. The world made sense, and I felt liberated and secure. No problem was too new that it hadn't been documented before and written about by someone long ago. Books have the answers that free us from the shackles of this world.

    2) 'Other than those that truly love you, people in general care only for what you bring to the table.' - parents again.

They told me to brainstorm things I was good at: things I could tolerate doing for many years. Then, they told me to invest several hundred/thousand hours into whatever activity I thought of. By the end, I was an expert in something. Somewhere out in the world, a person/group of people would pay for that skill. Find them. Profit.

Success is about leverage. There's always opportunities out there if you just bide your time and have your ducks in a row. Think Warren Buffet.

Time makes money. Meaning the concept of time value of money and compound interest.

Smart people earn interest dumb people pay interest. This comes back to the leverage idea. If you're always hard up for money you pay late fees, get payday loans, have bad credit etc.

Introspection and empathy are the two most important soft skills you'll ever need.

Any decision or action made out of fear is likely a bad one.

Respect is earned but courtesy is mandatory.

You don't choose your family like you do your friends who earn your trust and respect so don't feel obligated towards family just because they're family.

Some people n this world just drownd and if you try to save them they will just pull you down too.

Until you find something to fight for you'll settle for something to fight against.

It's not about working hard, but also about working smart. I think positive, goal driven thinking is more than half the battle.
