You don't get to the playoffs when your defense is historically bad. Ask Drew Brees. Career high in interceptions happens when you throw more often. Look at pretty much the majority of QBs in the NFL. Less than 2:1 td to int ratio... Why is that the magic number? Drew Brees has a career td:int of less than 2:1. Its already been mentioned that he had one of the highest qb ratings and ypa that season. There is no debating that he was awesome with no running game.
Schaub plays well when games don't really matter. If you look at that year, they started out 2-3. Not a good start, probably won't make the Playoffs so they begin playing well and win 3 in a row. At 5-3, people start thinking Houston has a legit chance of making the Playoffs. What happens? Schaub becomes scared and they lose 4 in a row and pretty much end our chances of making the postseason. With the pressure off, Schaub starts rebounding and we win 4 in a row to end the season. I'm not saying Schaub NEVER plays well in critical games, but more often than not, he locks up under the pressure.
Yeah, well, guess what's more important? A defense that causes turnovers. Who cares if you give up yards when you are intercepting or forcing fumbles? Fact of the matter is that you dont get to the Superbowl with a mediocre defense in the playoffs. The Saints, during the 2009 year, had 39 takeaways (26 interceptions and 13 fumble recoveries). And dont forget...8 of those take aways led to touchdowns. 8 of them...let that sink in. The 2009, 2010, 2011, and 2012 Houston Texan defenses totaled 8 touchdowns. So yeah, you can talk yards all you want, but the Saints defense was a turnover causing machine. Makes it much easier to make the playoffs that way... And what happened in the playoffs, the Saints held their opponents to 14 points in the Divisional game, caused 5 turnovers in the Conference game, and then held Manning to 17 points in the Superbowl. You cant win without a good defense...and the Saints defense was the king of capitalizing on the other team's mistakes.
Yep. And despite Eli having arguably his best regular season, the Giants finished 9-7. Guess what happened in the playoffs? The running game averaged 28 more yards/game and an average defense went '85 Bears. Taking nothing away from Eli - who was sensational during that run - no way they win a title without the running game and defense taking their games up a notch. They were 30th in 2009. And despite <strike>Eli</strike> Schaub having arguably his best regular season, the <strike>Giants</strike> Texans finished 9-7.
what is the excuse for Eli, Brees, and Rothlisberger for not making the playoffs? if you claim they excel in pressure games why didn't they will their team to enough victories?
See this is the biggest gripe I have with certain posters. To have the audacity to disparage guys like Eli, Brees, and Big Ben just to prop up ,of all people, Matthew Rutledge Schaub. Not Cutler or Matt Ryan, but Matt Schaub. Sigh...
right, and you think the Texans only problem is matt schaub. he's not without his limitations, but just like those "elites" the team has to perform as whole. as Hey Now pointed out, the Giants made the playoffs going 9-7 and the defense happened to step it up in the playoffs. no playoffs last year. drew brees threw for record breaking yardarge and TDs last year, no playoffs. who saying schaub is as good as them (well, Eli is arguable)? i just want to know why didn't they make the playoffs. so answer the question.
so would everyone else on this board. i mean, why don't the texans just trade for one of them. it's that easy right?
I never said the only problem with the Texans is Matt Schaub. I said in 2008, he will take us out of the basement and into the living room . He will not take us to the penthouse, The best chance he had was in 2011 to make it to the AFC Title game.......vs ...........the Pats So what are we to do ? Not much as of now. I would love to see Josh Freeman and Kubiak team up though. He's good , not great.
Agreed, playoff game against the Pats Texans D, didnt get a turnover, but the Ravens D intercepted Brady and forced fumbles, shutting down the Patriots in the 2nd half.
eh, I give him a d- for yesterday's performance. He didn't throw any bombs. KP was throwing all over for the 49ers, he had that one for 32 yards. It was crazy awesome to an open Davis, unlike schoob who only passes to Tight ends! on a real note, schaub passed for his 26th career 300+yard game. do you internetz experts want to run down the list of the other 'game managers' who have 26?
Huh? Schaub has always had good games, he's had good games last season too. We all thought he was tough and turned the corner in Denver, and then the end of last season still happened where he sucked.
be a realist. those final games, the o-line broke like a new orleans levee. when that happens, qbs, especially one that isn't athletic, they will falter. why do you think brady can't get past a defense that features a great d line in the playoffs? Why does manning go 3tds/7ints in a superbowl run? .Everything as a whole has to work. this is something fantasy dorks can't grasp. They're so obsessed at qb winning games by himself, a concept 'experts' have created. The last four games, almost every team was bring in pressure from all angles and the defense+special teams was pretty pathetic. Lol at having Josh Freeman! Funny one ubigred, how many chapters does freeman's book have?
