The hate for Schaub is a classic case of not knowing what you have till it's gone. He's good, but he's not the best. We know exactly what we'll get from him. The backups are not as good as Schaub, but because we haven't seen them starting for this team for six or seven years, we want to see them start, and (slightly to moderately) overestimate them, in order to fool ourselves into believing they are something that Schaub is not. In reality, we have a pretty good QB ready to lead this team, and lead he will. A lot of people have a .500 or worse record in the playoffs. Give him a chance to win some games, and we'll see what people say then.

Honestly, that on top of a great training camp based off reports and a good preseason he HAS to be on the final roster.
I hate to be dramatic, but anyone who says that Case should be the starter this year is flat out stupid. Back to real football talk...Sam Montgomery showed me next to nothing, granted I only watched the first half. Yeah, he's obviously a big strong guy but I didn't see any moves and no explosion off or around the edge. The most praise worthy thing I can say about him was that he seemed to be somewhat fluid dropping back into zone coverage. Trevardo did show some flashes but still not near what I was hoping and what the texans need from these guys. I would say if anyone goes on IR I'm not sure why you'd put Trevardo on it over Sam. To me it seems like Woods earned the spot. I really like Dennis but the fumble might have sealed his fate.
This dude has been spreading truth during this whole thread, listen to this man (coming from someone who isn't overly thrilled with Schaub).
Quotes from after the game: Head coach Gary Kubiak Spoiler Gary, did anybody get hurt? I just walked past Kap and I think we are okay. They are over there x-raying Daniel Muir’s hand and Trevardo (Wiliams) rolled an ankle late in the game, but other than that I think we are okay. How do you feel about getting through preseason without any major injuries? You see all these other teams losing players. Well, I’ll say it’s about time. We have had our share here over the course of the last few years. But, we still have some of our challenges with Antonio and Ed and Wade. So, we have our challenges from that standpoint. But, it’s been a good camp; I think tonight showed how much our young guys worked in camp. We had guys miss time and we just kept on pushing as a team. And these young guys, boy did they play good tonight. You could just tell that they were very far along in their progress. I think we have 75 guys in there that can play in this league. Unfortunately, they can’t all play for us this year. Gary, how do you look at your backup quarterback spot? Well, they both played pretty darn good. If you look at it, it’s been that way the whole camp. They have both their job. It’s really just a matter of us sitting down and deciding which way we go to start the season. I want to keep them competitive all year long, regardless of which way I go. Because I think, boy has it both made them better and made our team better. But, we will sit down and talk about it as coaches; I’m in no hurry here. Probably make that decision before we start our preparation next Thursday. But, statistically they have both been incredible. Both be here, have three quarterbacks? I have to do that in the morning, but it’s a dang good chance. Those two guys played like that, I don’t think we expose them to anybody else. Did the guys separate themselves generally enough to make your job easier the next two days? I think a lot of the young guys played well. I really think it’s a credit to how far they have come. I know upfront, offensively we played really well. If we can take some of these plays back to call back. We ran the ball extremely well. I’m watching guys; obviously both backs did some good things. Our young tight end played very good. Andy Cruse goes in there and plays extremely well. If you just look across the board, there are a lot of good guys, guys doing good things. Boy, it’s tough, but it’s a good problem to have. What do you say about Kennum, he didn’t have an interception? Yeah. They protected the ball throughout camp. We go against a dang good group everyday and our guys have protected the ball pretty good and that’s a key to our success. Hopefully, we continue to do that. How tough will it be for you to tell one of those two guys that they are going to be free? Extremely tough. But we will get through it. What is that feeling like, when you shake hands preseason with players? It’s a tough night because first off I think they went out and had a lot of fun. They got to play a bunch, they had a good time. They finished the preseason the right way. They all feel good about that, but yet they are all sitting there thinking okay now what’s my future. I tried to tell them last night, don’t worry about what’s next, just enjoy tomorrow. We will get through it, but it’s the hard part of the business. You’ve been with guys for six weeks and they give you everything they’ve got and you got to say it’s not going to happen here, right now. That’s the tough part. What did you like about Case? He had a few bad plays. But he always comes back and makes a big play. He has a very short memory as a player and that’s a good thing as a quarterback. Because you may make a mistake with the ball or too, but he comes back and makes really nice plays. So, I think that’s been the biggest progress and the fact that he knows the offense exceptionally well. What about T.J.? Same thing. First off, T.J. played with Andy and EZ; two young receivers that he had to go get right every play. So, T.J. is out there with all young players. I told him part of my evaluation process was how could you handle all those young guys. And boy, did he get ‘em all going and played extremely well. What about Posey? Felt good about it, I think we played 14 plays; I wanted him to touch the ball. He started off with a penalty, that wasn’t a good one. He got tacked a few times, so I think he feels confident that he’s ready to go. And he’s going to be able to help Joe and I don’t think that was something we were counting on when Cam started, so that’s a big plus. Was there any thought on playing Hopkins this evening? Yes, there was but in all honesty he hasn’t passed the final test. So, he would have liked to play 10 or 12 plays, but he’s not finished yet. What about DeVier? I felt good about him. He played real good and like I said, got him some touches, got him tackled, all the things that go with coming back. You didn’t have Deji Karim? You know, I think I know what I have there. He’s been consistent in camp, he’s been good for Joe and we needed to see how those other two would react with carries. So, that was the point right there. It was nothing against him or anything. So you guys give Posey a healthy dose tonight. No, I think the dosage keeps him moving forward. I think he’s in preseason game two when he started against San Diego. If he comes back and plays 20-25 plays this week, three weeks from now he should able to play all we need him to play. I just think his confidence will keep going forward. With Hopkins not passing protocol tonight, are there any reservations that he will be ready? No, he’s fine. I think if we weren’t here in Dallas and we were back with our Doctors in Houston, he would pass it today. So, I don’t see any problem. How much momentum can be gained, just going into the regular season after a taste of victory? It feels good to see a group of guy’s battle and have a good preseason like we did. The slate gets wiped, we start over. Once we get going next week, it’s time to go. We settle with our 53, I like taking this week to kind of get these vets to get away from the pressure they go through week in and week out. We have had a good week, they have conditioned extremely hard and worked out today at TCU. So, I feel good about their week and getting back going. A couple of your draft picks missed games like Chris Jones and Brennan Williams, what did you see from those guys when they came back to play this game? Well, in watching Chris, I thought Chris did some pretty good things. Brennan has missed so much time. His knee has been bothering him, we’ve been draining it. I think it bothered him tonight too. I know it’s a concern that we got to go take a look at. But we just wanted to get him some snaps of pro football because he has just missed so much time. So, that’s a health decision that we have to make. Cornerback A.J. Bouye Spoiler On how the younger players performed: “As a unit we showed we are ready to compete. We are not afraid to go against anybody. I think we did a good job showing that.” On his performance in preseason: “I think it went pretty well. Just trying to show this team that I can compete, really, and that I am willing to lay it on the line. It went really well.” Quarterback Case Keenum Spoiler “I feel really good. I think we were running the ball really well. The offensive line did a heck of a job and Cierre (Wood) came to play today. Being able to run the ball opened up play action and a lot of that stuff…It started with the offensive line. It was a really good game.” “I’m going to look at the film. There were a few third downs we didn’t convert and a few passes that I’d like to have back. But I think overall, moving the ball and scoring touchdowns is what I want to do and I think we did that for the most part.” On the WR/TE depth: “I think a lot of those young guys from the top to the bottom have been really good about being where they needed to be at the time when we need them to be it. It’s good to have Posey back out there today. Even the backs from the backfield, I think they’ve been a big part of this preseason. Our job is to get the ball in the hands of the guy that can make the plays at the right time.” On the first pass to Posey: “Yup. We planned it. We do a little preparation during the week…It was a play where Posey did a good job of working and really made a good catch. I led him a little too far. It was good to have him out there.” On waiting to hear about second QB job: “I don’t think I have really have to deal with waiting or any of that stuff. It is what it is. I’m going out to prepare to play San Diego. I think TJ’s going to do the same thing. We’re all following Matt’s lead. That’s just how it goes. That’s what football players do. You just never know.” Outside linebacker Sam Montgomery Spoiler On how the younger players performed: “I think as a unit we did a really good job. We beat the young guys. I think a lot of our guys on this team have the potential to play all over this league. Just being in the NFL. A different speed, a different style of play. But it is still the same game when it comes down to it. With experience, with time, I think we will all be better.” On his own performance during preseason: “I think I started out real low but I think I climbed up the mountain pretty high. I do different things, just fighting and fighting and fighting to keep on. Then to come out here and play a whole game, on special teams, its something I’ve never done before. And to come out here and do a pretty descent job of it, as well as playing the position I was given at linebacker, I just feel like I did a pretty good job setting my responsibilities. Wide receiver DeVier Posey Spoiler “There was a lot of hard work to get to this point. It was a small celebration. It was good to be one of the guys again.” On being involved early: “I had an idea. I was expecting it. I knew I was not going to play much. I was just trying to do well with what I had.” On playing again: “It’s been a long time. I’ve been really fortunate to miss any real time. It’s a testament to our training staff and how we worked together. They push me. I just wanted to come in and work hard…The part of my job that I had to do this offseason was to get healthy. I just wanted to show them I could do my job.” Safety D.J. Swearinger Spoiler On his numerous pre-season snaps: “I think I have played a lot of snaps. But it is great for me to get a lot of reps. The more reps, the more experience. It is good for me.” On the possibility that he will be able to play a lot of snaps for this team: “Whenever my number is called. I know I am going to get a lot of special teams reps and down reps. Whenever my number is called, I will be ready.” On his mastery of the defense: “I think I have mastered it to a tee. When we are playing dime and I’m in at free safety, I know what the d-line is doing, the linebackers and the secondary. And that is one of my goals. To know what the entire defense is doing, not just myself. I think playing multiple positions has helped me a lot.” On the hits he has delivered in preseason: “As a safety, you have to deliver that punch every time you come down on the run. Or if a receiver is coming across the middle you have to deliver that punch. It sends a message to the other team, and gets the energy going with your own team. It is good to be able to lay a hit.” On the time between now and the first regular season game with the Chargers: “We have a little time off, but we can use it to our advantage. Get more film in. Get more treatment. And do a little extra. It will be good for us.” Running back Cierre Wood Spoiler On his TD celebration: “That’s called the South Dallas Swag. I was in Dallas. I had to pull that out. It’s not my dance because I’m not from Dallas. But us Cali people, we perfected it.” “I was just trying to show everybody what I can do. I know my abilities. I know my talents. The last couple games, I didn’t get to show that much. My philosophy is when I go in there, I want to do something to catch everyone’s attention…This game was no different.” “Everyone knows that cuts are going to happen. That’s something I’m not worried about. If you’re confident in your abilities, then you should have no problem. The nervousness was not really there for me. It was just another game to me.” “I believe I can play this game with the best of them. I just need my chance. These games are put here in front of me to showcase my talents to world, not just this team but the other 31 teams out there.” Quarterback T.J. Yates Spoiler “We both played really well again. It all starts again with our offensive line and being able to run the ball. That opens up our offensive and makes us so versatile. We can do pretty much anything offensively when we’re running the ball like that. They are making it easy on us.” On working with a different group of receivers: “It’s a little different. Most of those guys, I’ve been working them all camp and getting a chance to throw to them to figure out what kind of receivers they are. Once you get into the game with those guys, they are running full speed, they are anxious, they are getting ready. It’s fun. They do a good job. We were moving the ball great.” On OLine depth: “Especially those two and three O-Lines, being able to run the ball like that and giving the backs open lanes to run free on those guys. It’s a testament to the coaches, all these players all camp long just pushing, working hard, getting better. No matter where they are on the depth chart, those guys are still working hard.” On Posey’s return: “That was really awesome. Everybody’s rooting hard for him. He’s come back so quick from that injury. Everybody’s seen him all summer long busting his tail and rehabbing every single day to get back quick and help this football team.” http://www.houstontexans.com/news/a...-Cowboys/2144e036-96a0-4b91-acbf-4e60c228fccd
Not one question about the backup RBs other than "tell us you love Deji". That is the question that needs to be asked, who cares about b/u QB, the world knows they won't practice squad either of them. But Woods awesome preseason gets swept under the rug and when they ask Uncle Bob about him during the game his quote was, "yeah, that's a tough one". The kid was cut before he went out and laid it all on the line last night. Put me on record as the guy saying cutting Wood could be a huge mistake, he has looked as good or better than any undrafted rookie rb this team has trotted out during a preseason EVER and that should carry some weight round here; but you go ahead Coach Kubes, you keep Deji. Also, do the reproters in this **** town have to submit their questions to the Texans Gestapo for approval prior to reading them? Never have I seen a bunch of pump em up, blow hot air up their skirt bunch of nancy boy questions as I have repeatedly seen asked of a football coach as we have here, this has gone on for years.
I am not saying Keenum is ready to start now, but he looks like the future to me. I love his pocket presence and his mobility. It just seems like he picks up the tempo. Really impressed. The pass he threw for the TD was one of the most perfect passes I have ever seen. It literally dropped out of the air into the receiver's hands. Come on people, that was some "wow" factor.
Just a few random observations from having to watch the game on a Dallas broadcast. I'm not sure about the 1st half, but there were absolutely no crowd shots the entire 2nd half. I have to assume Jerry made that happen because of the Texans fans. When the Texans kept bringing the defensive heat and getting all those sacks towards the end of the game, the announcers were referencing Wade getting a little pay back and gave him a thumbs up for his 'Son of Bum' tweets. Michael Irvin and Dez Bryant need to get a room. Keenum is looking more and more like the real thing. I played pack the TD play to Jean a number of times and the way he just flips that pass that just floated straight down into Jeans hands looked so easy (no fuss no muss). My real fear for Keenum is that he may not be able to hold up as a regular starter. I hope to be proved wrong sometime.
Keenum is a tough dude, I would think he would be as durable as any other QB. Maybe more so because of this elusiveness.
Quotes from Kubiak's press conference today: Head Coach Gary Kubiak Spoiler (on if there are any injury updates) “We had a little light workout today. So to update you, (G) Wade (Smith) is still not working with us, but is doing very well. I tell you all the time, he probably worked harder than the team with the trainers. (ILB Darryl) Sharpton was not back yet to work today. (WR DeAndre) Hopkins still has not passed stage five, so that’s something we hope to get done here, hopefully will take place over the weekend before we get into Monday. (WR Alan) Bonner has not returned to the field, so nothing’s changed there. Coming out of the game, (T) Brennan Williams’ knee is swelling on us again. It’s just been a reoccurrence every time we put him through some pretty stressful stuff, so we’re dealing with that today. (OLB) Trevardo Williams got rolled up at the end of the game, got an ankle and a knee that’s being evaluated. That’s it for now.” (On NT Daniel Muir’s status) “He’s got a hand. It’s getting X-rayed. Actually, a thumb I think and an ankle that’s getting X-rayed, both.” (on what he feels best about during this preseason) “Well, I feel good about just the camp in general. I think I said this last night, the guys that have been out there working, we’ve had a really good camp. I think we’re really going to improve our self. We’re going to add some really new faces, young faces on this team. But I think it gives us a chance to ascend throughout the course of the season. I feel good about that. The thing I’m concerned about obviously is some guys that we’re counting on huge have missed time. It goes back to (OLB) Whitney (Mercilus). Whitney is back to work today. Worked with the team, looks great. But the fact is he hasn’t had a preseason. (RB) Arian (Foster) hasn’t had a preseason and (FS) Ed (Reed) hasn’t had a preseason, and (G) Wade (Smith) has missed a good period of time. I’d like us all to be working together, but that is part of it. Something we’ll have to work through. That would be my biggest concern right now.” (on if there is anything new on the status of the backup quarterback situation) “Nope. None. I actually have so many other things going on today. I’ll probably make that decision in all honesty when we start our preparation next Thursday when we get into our San Diego stuff. Until then, I’ll probably keep doing what I’m doing.” (on if there is anything new on the status of FS Ed Reed) “No. There was a five-day process from when he had the injections and, I can’t remember exactly what day the injections were, where he basically was sitting idle. That time is up. He’ll be back tomorrow. We’re hoping to do some field drills Monday and Tuesday with our extra days with him, with Kap (Head Athletic Trainer Geoff Kaplan). We’ll probably make a quick decision early in the week, Monday or Tuesday, on his availability for San Diego. We’re sitting here hoping and we’ll see how that goes.” (on WR DeVier Posey returning to game action) “First, you’re just glad that he’s back at it. He had 14 good plays and a couple of catches, got tackled, got hit and all those types of things. Just to get him back to work and then he comes back today and I actually worked the guys that didn’t play in the game pretty hard today. We did a bunch of individual stuff. He hopped right back in and went to work so that was encouraging to me. I think he’ll probably line up against San Diego, he’s probably in like his second or third preseason game but that’s OK. We’re going to have our group and he’s going to have his role. How big that role is opening weekend? We’re going to have to wait and see, but he’s coming a long way.” (on if he feels better about the defense and giving up big plays) “Nothing was going to change from a couple of weeks ago through last night because we played a bunch of young guys. Yeah, that was a concern coming out of the preseason. We gave up some big plays defensively, but it’s not going to stop what we do. We’re aggressive. We play a lot of man-coverage. We count on K-Jack (CB Kareem Jackson) and J-Jo (CB Johnathan Joseph) to shut people down. I’ve got confidence in those guys. They’ve had good camps. Like I’ve said, it’s not going to change our belief and what we do or anything. Offensively, I think the biggest thing I’ve been encouraged by the last two weeks is how we’ve run the ball. I know last night was a bunch of young guys, but still, it’s a mentality. The New Orleans and the last game were much improved. We threw the ball much better throughout the course of training camp, I think than we have since I’ve been here.” (on how much he worries about OLB Whitney Mercilus being a first time starter and missing preseason games) “I don’t know. We’re going to find out. Hopefully it doesn’t hurt him at all. There is nothing we can do. He gets the hamstring early in camp. If you bring him back too soon, then you can lose him for a long period of time. I think we probably could’ve pushed him around New Orleans time, there at the end, and could’ve played him last night, but it got to that point where hey we’ve made it this far. Let’s make sure we have him ready to go against San Diego. A lot of it is up to him. He’s been working hard. It’s a lot like (RB) Arian (Foster) when we were going through it, ‘When’s he coming back? When’s he coming back?’ It’s not like Whitney hasn’t done anything. He’s been working extremely hard with the trainers. Just getting back on the field with us is a big thing.” (on if he sees RB Arian Foster not carrying the ball as much against San Diego given that he didn’t have any preseason carries) “Obviously I don’t think (RB) Arian (Foster) is going to be a 30-carry guy opening night without camp. But he got good work last week. This is going to be a good week for him because we’ve actually got two extra days that can get us a couple extra padded practices before we start our week. Us opening on Monday should be beneficial to Arian. But we know (RB) Ben (Tate) is ready to go. He’s had a great preseason and between the two of them, we’ve got to do it well. We obviously have to sit there and have a plan for Arian, being his first time out.” (on what he liked about the way Case Keenum and T.J. Yates handled the backup quarterback competition throughout training camp) “Character. Class. That’s the biggest thing. To have two guys in the same room battling for the same job, understanding what’s going on and they’re like, I can’t sit here and tell you they’re best friends, I don’t know. But I mean they’re very close and they study together and they complement each other, their work habits. The room in general is just excellent and I think that’s what has lent to the competition being so good and the result being so good because they are on the same page. One thing that they all know, we talk to players all the time, it’s about your career and doing it. And these two guys have obviously taken a big step in their careers. They’ve both gotten better, so we’re proud of both of them and we’re going to be a better team because of it.” (on how much RB Cierre Wood did for his chances of making the roster with his performance against Dallas on Thursday night) “He made a big push. We played he and D.J. (RB Dennis Johnson) a bunch. They both did some good things. D.J. put the ball on the ground, which you can’t have. I think Cierre has shown a lot of ability. There have been some inconsistencies there. We want him to be a better special teams player. But obviously he’s a guy out there that as a free agent has NFL ability and we know that. So it’s our job to find it. But he took a big step. It’s going to make the decision very tough.” (on if he has extra concern given that WR DeAndre Hopkins has not passed the final stage of his concussion protocol) “No, I don’t. I think it’s a matter of us coming back from Dallas, everything we’re trying to get done today. Our doctors with the cuts going, the doctors working with those situations. I think this is going to get done here in the next couple days and hopefully he’s on the field Monday.” (on how difficult it is for coaches to make final roster cuts) “Yeah, it’s just, it’s no fun. I mean, you sit in your office and those guys come in there that—first off, it starts last night, to be honest with you, after the game in the locker room. Because the guys were excited. They played good. They felt good about themselves but they know what tomorrow is all about, so it’s a rough night for a lot them. You just try to sit down with each one and be honest about their path. I haven’t met with all of them yet today but the visits I’ve had have been good. I told them after the game, I think we have 75 guys that can play in the National Football League. So that’s the biggest compliment I can give them.”
Castor / mods can we get a GAME 1 thread?

Just got a new pair of MegaWatt's! This is affirmative although the crowd wasn't all that great to begin with. Everyone knew that this game would be a blowoff game for both teams with no starters expected to play. There were a lot of tix available. Ha ha! That was priceless. The "canonization" of Dez Bryant up here has reached nauseating levels. NOW he's supposedly the BEST WR in the league next to Calvin Johnson. Don't misunderstand me: after 4 years, his widdle Dez brain has FINALLY learned the playbook so I suppose that up here that's a cause for celebration. Agree. I'm a big CK fan.
