Bottom line, this is a classic case of how fickle Houston/sports fans can be. eff T-Mac Let the Astrodome go to s***, and then tear it down Royce White gives back to the city? Lets make fun of him Mark my words, when Kobe comes back from his injury and is a shell of his former self, he will pull the same/worse ish that T-Mac did. Dwight leaving the Lakers was just a prelude to the dark days ahead for Laker land. However, I guarantee, even when Kobe holds that franchise hostage season after excruciating season, no one will talk of his legacy being tarnished.
I don't think this is an example of being fickle. Houston fans were positive about Royce for about 2 weeks after the draft and then....
Just because it would put the fans and the whole organization in a better mood. Make it more likely that we'll remember the good times and look past the bad.
agree... same for Yao... appreciate all the effort, but I don't think either is 'jersey retired' status...
That's because Kobe won a bunch of championships and didn't leave the team. it's pretty damn hard to tarnish 5 championships
The Rockets just need to lay low and see if Toronto or Orlando are willing to offer first. If I were Les, I would just skirt around the issue and if asked if he were going to retire T-Mac's jersey my response would be "yet to be determined". It's not a no or a yes but in reality, it's a HELL NO!!!
HELLO!!!!!! You act like McGrady didn't do anything to have the Rockets fans have this attitude towards him. Put aside he never got out of the 1st rd of the playoffs. He flat out QUIT on his teammates and the entire city watched him do this. Was it a mistake on his part? Who's to say because he's never acknowledged it nor told his team he was sorry for acting like a little three yr old and that he did quit on them.
Unfortunately no for Tmac. I didn't know Yao's was being retired. Uncertain about that decision too. Does the #1 and #11 jersey match the level and success of the #22 and #34 jersey it would hang next to? Don't think so.
No. Not after he quit on us in 2009. I cannot ever forgive him for that. That was our year and he threw it all away due to his selfishness.
Yao's is being retired because he poured his heart and soul into this city. He never gave up even when he was hurt. He ALWAYS gave 110% every single night. Never sulked, never took the blame off himself. Remember when Yao broke his foot in the playoffs against the Lakers and we went up in the series? Yao is being retired because he had a HEART OF A CHAMPION. Tmac was everything Yao, Hakeem, Clyde, Malone, Rudy T and Murph weren't to the Rockets. Everybody hanging there were proven winners, not whiners. Yao absolutely deserves to have his number above. So when my kid is old enough, I can always point and say I watched one of the most dedicated Rockets to ever play. Tmac can go screw himself. He was good, but does NOT deserve to hang up there with the real Rocket legends.
As funny as it is, McGrady has a way better chance of getting in the HOF than getting his jersey retired here.
Even Maxwell would shed a tear, this guy's heart is that of Clutch City. The Last of the Rudy T Rockets. You know he's not BSing you like that other dude. He's a Rocket for life. http://www.slamonline.com/online/nba/2011/07/yao-ming-i-will-formally-retire/ He also will not leave Houston, and sent a message to his “second hometown.” … “I’d like to thank you for giving me a great nine years in my career,” Yao said. “Nine years ago, I came to Houston as a young, tall, skinny player. An entire city and team changed me to a grown man, not only as a basketball player. I gained my first daughter over there. I feel I’m a Houstonian and I will always be with you.
