My issue with Adam is that he tries too hard to be funny and "hip." I'm finding myself listening to Mike and Mike more than I ever did before.
His contract was most certainly longer than whatever matt and adam had left and more expensive to get rid of. Do you seriously think Los Cucos is paying lance less now that his local ratings have increased tenfold, not to mention how many people can hear it without static? They were fired because Lance didn't bring in the ratings, or at least the #1 show he was expected to, at either time slot. Cuts had to be made, they were the cheapest to fire. One month in and the new show blows. Lance and Charlie were great.
To me Adam is basically filling the Granato role when Lance was with JG all those years. So I wonder if the same people hated that tandem, they must have been doing something right to get all those doublerod sycophants to follow them.
Definitely finding myself listening to 610 more and more, which would have been unthinkable just a few weeks ago. I guess I'm one of the few people that still listen to 1560 on occasion, as I still think John Harris delivers some of the best sports talk in town. It's really too bad that he and Cablinasian are stuck on the sinking ship that is 1560, because I think pairing them up again would make for a great show.
I switched to full time Sirius/XM. At least Howard Stern's repeats are more entertaining, and if it's not I just switch to Opie and Anthony or something else out of the 250 channels. AM radio is obsolete for me now. Good job Clear Channel! You guys turned 790 into a junk pile.
Stone Cold Steve Austin Podcast (I did see he interviewed Jay Mohr one episode not sure if I want to listen to that one) listener here...still listen to 790 a little in the mornings but without MT in the middle of the days I'm a podcaster now.
Was never a fan of JG, I listened back then for Lance only. Somehow Lance has "lost" something in the current lineup, not sure what it is (maybe Adam is bringing him down), just don't find him as enjoyable as before. The callers from those shows was one of the biggest turnoffs while listening to them. Wonder when Gilbert is going to show up. 610 has good ratings with Rich & Josh, so rating doesn't mean good programming (at least for us sports fans).
A show with just Lance and guests is a 10 in my book. Lance & Charlie, about an 8. Lance and Clanton is like a 5 for me right now. I also think certain baggage comes with the 790 morning schtick, the job description is different. It doesn't suit Lance or Clanton IMO. I thought I was gonna like this lineup... and if this lineup was in the afternoon it'd probably be better. But right now they're not as good as Matt & Adam were, but it's still early.
Honestly if I could listen to 790 for 5 minutes without them breaking to 10 minutes of commercials I'd be pretty happy. I have all 4 stations next to each other on my presets (610,790,97.5 and 1560) and more often than not they are all on commercials at the same time. Gotta pay the bills I guess...
It's been a month already? Wow, times flies. I'm still flipping back and forth between 610 and 790 in the morning. Probably a 60/40 split with 610 winning. Basically I turn the dial every time one of Lance's fanboys with their stupid nicknames calls in, I also turn the dial any time John Lopez starts to do nothing but laugh at his own jokes. Clanton might as well not exist, but it's early in his career so maybe he'll get better. Meltzer and Payne is now my favorite show on the radio. Those guys are just on top of it. A good balance of humor and insight, and they have great chemistry. In The Trenches continues to suck. Either Koch or Kalu needs to go and they need to put a seasoned radio vet alongside the other to keep the show on the rails. Jay Mohr is just as bad as I initially thought he was. The entire act just grates on me. I probably couldn't watch his standup or movies now without having PTSD. Matt Thomas' new time slot has virtually erased him from my consciousness, and that's a shame. About the only good thing to come out of all of this is the fact that Charlie's show went back to its natural format.
As bad as Lance and Clanton have been, they are still way better than those ""in the trenches" folks. Absolute worst show on 790
John Lopez laughing at his own jokes makes me cringe. Nick Wright will usually say something every morning rather quickly that makes you think...well this guy doesn't know more about sports than the casual fan. Quite frankly, I'm thinking about just listening to music every morning.
I like both Payne's and Meltzer's personalities but don't like what they bring to the table sports-wise.
The more I listen to sports radio, the more I realize that the only person who has any actual knowledge beyond football is Charlie Palilo. The other guys in this thread were right when they said Matt and Adam getting fired was a huge blow to Rockets fans. They were the best NBA analysts in town.
I don't get the hate for In The Trenches...well I can understand they don't have great radio voices and aren't super polished in their broadcasting skills, but they know their football and I think they are very reasonable in their arguments.
I think the reason people dislike the show is mostly because its been offseason for a while and there just isn't much to talk about. It's all mostly Johnny Football, back up qb debate, Matt shaub sucks topics.
Well that's certainly true..the dog days of summer was not kind to them. When there is a lot of football going on I suspect people might find them more tolerable.
