They'll probably take on some salary at the deadline and get some picks in return. That particular deal would make them better short term and they lose a prospect, so it's kind of the opposite of what they'd want. Besides, i don't like this deal for the Rockets.
Houston in: Brandon Knight, Ersan Ilyasova Milwauke in: Lin, Tyreke Evans, 1st round pick from New Orleans, 2nd round pick from Houston New Orleans: Asik, Delfino Why Houston does it: We get a combo guard to fit with Harden, Knight is a good shooter and Ilyasova who is perfect with Dwight. We also shed salary. Why Milwaukee does it: To jumpstart the rebuild with picks and young players in Evans and Lin Why New Orleans does: To solve the center problem
I'm late to this discussion and you are right that Ilyasova only takes fairly wide open 3s, which somewhat skews his %, though I'm not so sure that's a negative -- at least not when comparing him to Ryan Anderson, who'll fire away pretty much whenever he feels like. I'd take Ilyasova's unnecessary pumpfakes and one/two dribble pull-ups over Anderson's at times insane shot selection (Magic fans used to call him Chuckerson, FWIW). Ilyasova's game is a bit more well rounded, too. I actually like the HOU-MIL-WAS angle that was brought up. I'd just switch some players, keep Asik. HOU out: Lin, D-Mo In: Ilyasova MIL out: Ilyasova, Ridnour (exp), Udoh (exp) In: Lin, D-Mo, Ariza (exp) WAS out: Ariza In: Rindour, Udoh
I can still see a 3 way deal where T-Wolves get: L. Aldridge Rights to Llull Future protected pick Blazers get: O. Asik Brooks T. Jones A Euro & protected 2nd rounder Rockets get: K. Love M. Leonard Picks & a few fillers to make it work. If media reports are true and LMA wants out & both Love and Asik are not happy then Minnesotta get an All-Star to replace their All-Star, and one that fits Adelman's system perfectly & Rubio's mate when he finally decides to come to the NBA, Portland get a top 10 center, a 'Dwight Howard like' power forward with major upside, (& who has already made some friends in the Portland area...) & Brooks gets to go home. We get us the rebounding All-Star face stomping Stretch 4 that we're all salavitating over in Kevin Love. This is a win-win for all 3 teams involved. Thoughts...?
I like it. If Portland wants to keep Leonard,it's fine with me. If Portland and Minnesota want a lottery protected first rounder, that's fine too. I think Portland will want more for LMA.
A rebuilding/tanking team that is being managed by a Daryl Morey protege very obviously makes no such trade. Look for Philly to absorb 2-3 expiring contracts from teams looking to minimize their luxury tax bill. In exchange for reducing their trading partner's tax bill, Philly would receive draft picks and some cash. Very obvious candidates to get shipped with a draft pick or two, plus cash, are Steve Blake, Kirk Hinrich, and Aaron Gray. These three guys' combined 2013-14 salaries = $10.7 mil.
My point is it's better to have Parsons and Asik than Anderson and Parsons, because Asik can play backup C and Parsons is just as good if not better than Anderson at every facet of the game including being a stretch 4. Anderson actually costs 1M more than Asik, and is an inferior player over all. Well the problem with this line of thinking is that Anderson isn't the difference between a dynasty and mediocrity, he's not some kind of missing link because as I already said before we have a stable of guys who could play the stretch 4 role already. If you don't want to waste any contender time then keeping Asik should be the priority, because he's Dwight Howard insurance. If we trade him for Anderson and DH gets injured, how does Anderson maximize our contender window? Another problem with holding out is that Asik could be a rental. He can't be extended. He's going to enter the open market. 2 year rental on a cheap contract > 1 or even 1.5 year rental. And on top of it, he's coming off a career year and will have a lesser role this season. And further on top of it, he's approaching the 15 mil paycheck. If you get a solid deal now, you take it. Asik's value won't be any higher.[/QUOTE] Anderson isn't cheap, he's actually making 1M more than Asik lol. Also while Asik will approach the 15M paycheck he will still only count 8M against the cap. I don't even know why you think he won't be extended, I'd pay Asik 8M just for Howard insurance and to ensure another team doesn't get their hand on a legit 7 foot defensive C. If he get 8M on a career year how much will get as a backup? 6M? 7M? It could we end up getting him cheaper. Assets trades are the only trades worth doing for the Rox IMHO. We're already set at all positions, hell we even have more than 15 guys on the squad.

Re why can't Asik be extended -- because CBA doesn't allow it. He will enter the open market as an unrestricted free agent. And the talk of resigning Asik at 6-7 mil a year is pure fantasy. Re your insistence on playing Parsons as a stretch 4, that's fine, but he can also play at 3.
Ok, this didn't work. My actual response: If Dwight Howard gets injured, then the Rockets are not a contender, simple. Re why can't Asik be extended -- because CBA doesn't allow it. He will enter the open market as an unrestricted free agent. And the talk of resigning Asik at 6-7 mil a year is pure fantasy. Depends on the length/type of the injury. Howard does not have to play for the Rockets to make the postseason. Asik could be insurance against a regular season injury to allow Howard to get healthy for playoffs, but that is not the reason to keep him. Asik is a much better player than most centers. The Rockets aren't going to waste the next two years by trading Asik for an increase in talent at another position that hurts the team overall due to the sharp drop in talent at the center position. Asik was signed by the Rockets with the intent of him being the backup to Howard. Howard just showed up a year later than planned.
Get a real backup. Waste of talent to use Asik as a backup. The Rockets aren't the 60s Celtics yet, they still have needs in their starting lineup. This is like a team having Chris Paul and Ty Lawson on the same roster, and instead of considering trades to upgrade the starting lineup, they get stubborn and keep Lawson because hey, Chris Paul needs a rest.
If the Rockets wind up trading Asik, I think his new team may look to restrucure his contract. For example, they may agree to add 2-3 additional years at $10-$12 mil/year if Asik agrees to a reduction of his 2014-15 salary from $15 mil to, say, $10 mil. I suspect Asik would be open to that sort of arrangement.
Bad example. It would be more like having Durant and Harden, and people saying to trade Harden for Ryan Anderson.
You'd have to explain how your example is better. Harden is a top 10 player, and Durant and Harden are a great fit. Having Durant/Harden and trading Harden for a frigging Ryan Anderson is not at all comparable to the Rockets situation. If Asik shows that he fits next to Dwight very well, and becomes a superstar in his own right, then this example will make sense. Until then, you might be slightly overrating Omer.
You can't reduce a player's contract. You can renegotiate and increase it if you have cap room. But in Asik's case, there can be no renegotiation or extension whatsoever because he's on a 3 year contract. He's going to be a free agent, and then every team will be able to bid.
