not really a big anime guy but i did watch all of Deathnote, which was excellent, a year ago. started watching full metal alchemist brotherhood on friday. i thought the first episode was lame but i got hooked after the second. watching how the brothers came to be was awesome. only 4 episodes in and can't wait to find out if they return to normal.

lol there are some really witty line in FMA

Hughes: I have a message for you from Roy... He said don't die under my command you're enough of a pain without the paperwork. That was it.

Ed: Tell him fine, there's no way I'm dying before you do, you morally bankrupt colonel with a god complex.

Seeing this thread again, reminds me that I haven't watched any animes for a while now.
Anyway, some of my favorite animes I can still remember the top of my head. Maybe will help someone who's looking for something to watch.

Bleach(stopped I think after 60 or so episodes due to length)
    Monster(long)
    Legend of Galactic Heroes(super long)
    Psycho Pass
    Darker than Black
    Fate Zero
    Black Lagoon

Also liked a couple of Gundam series that in retrospect, don't feel like recommending.

holy crap, Chimera episode of FMA: brotherhood was gut-wrenching. i don't think i've ever felt that much anger and sadness for any "cartoon."

IMO FMA Brotherhood is the better anime, especially towards the end... however FMA has a better opening and first half. Which makes sense, as both were derived from the same material (for the first 50% or so) but FMA was the first anime created, which makes the first few episodes of the latter brotherhood seem derivative and plain. However when FMA splits from the manga (due to overtaking it at the time) that's when the story suffers, especially the ending IMO.

I'm going out on a limb here but I would say berserk or cowboys bebop are the best anime shows I've ever seen

Whoa whoa whoa, you can't call anime a cartoon. That's a taboo, if you have to in order to compare, you could call it an animated series. Otherwise there will be pitchforks and torches on your front lawn. :p

That chimera episode was one of my favorites though.

    It's better than good!

OT: Watching all the Detective Conan animes. Didn't realize it's already at 600+ episodes. It's refreshing to revisit old shows like this that actually stimulates brain cells, rather than kill them. :p

I read a little bit of Attack on titan and man it was depressing. So much cannon fodder. I'm tempted to watch the show, but I'm worried I'll catch up too fast and be anticipating every new release.

You should read the Berserk manga. I'm really more into anime than manga, but Berserk is one of the two best I've ever read. The show is fine, but the manga is just ridiculously good.

Also, if you like Berserk, check out Claymore. And if you like Cowboy Bebop, check out Samurai Champloo.

If you wait about 5 weeks, season 1 should be done and you could just marathon it.

Excellent. How about Elfen Lied, Black Lagoon, and Hellsing Ultimate OVA? Those are the other shows besides Berserk and Claymore that I would describe as ultra-violent action but are actually fun to watch for reasons beyond just the violence itself (i.e. they're just good shows and not merely violence-p*rn).

Incidentally, the movie equivalents of these series would have to be the infamous Ninja Scroll and the slightly less well-know Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust, both directed by Yoshiaki Kawajiri. That guy knows his way around an action movie. His roller-coaster pacing in those films is impeccable, with just the right amount of quiet moments in between all the crazy action, something that most action filmmakers outside of James Cameron just don't understand these days.
