Is this because dorms are beneath you personally?

Nah, I stayed in a dorm my freshman year. It's good to make friends at, and a valuable experience, but some people here are advocating never moving out of them and staying on campus. That's not something I could ever see myself doing. Different strokes for different folks I suppose, but I wouldn't suggest it.

edit: also, if you do the on campus thing go san jac or durin

I lived in dorms for two semesters. I got to meet and become friends with several members of the football team. I increased my street cred with my regular friends when the football team members would come up and say what's up walking around campus. You will definitely meet a much wider array of people in the dorms from different backgrounds than just living with the rich kids in West Campus.

In 2003 when lived there, San Jac was the nicest dorm...I don't keep up with it but I'm sure it's still up there. A lot of athletes lived there at the time. Your brother will end up hanging out at jester anyway because that's where the majority of people stay.

Nothing wrong staying at Jester, great all around dorm experience. I also went to Kinsolving alot cuz of the better food and checking out chicks.

I use to go to this sports bar called Players. They have some good bar good and strawberry shakes. Don't know if it's still there.

    Hook'em!

its about to get demolished when I was there last year. Pretty sure it will soon if not already. UT is kicking them out.

    Also I don't think it's a bar anymore.

Jester is fantastic. By far the most social of all the dorms (outside of the honors dorms). The cafeteria food is pretty good for what it is. It's also on the 2nd floor so you can roll out of bed and eat. 24 hour wendys. There is always free pizza somewhere. There are just so many people and so many things to do.

The San Jacinto kids were usually snobby at Jester. I don't personally know anyone who didn't like it. I was there in 2004-05.

THe pizza and Smoothie places were great as well.

Usually you have to get your dorms stuff settled months ago. He's going to get stuck in the All guys engineering dorm.

Just got into Texas, and I'm pretty excited, but I'm conflicted as to which dorm to stay at. I'm out of state, and one of my really good friends is going to be staying at University Towers. He wants me to stay there also, but I've heard some pretty negative reviews about the place, and Jester has been recommended to me more than anything else.

I like the idea of staying close to someone I'm familiar with in what will be a completely new environment, but I'm not sure if I want to stay at the Towers.

So if anyone could offer me any suggestions/advice, that'd be great. Thanks.

I used to live in Jester and it was an awesome experience. Met tons of people there. Jester's good since it's in the heart of everything - close to gym, library, stadium, classes, etc.

Towers is fine, albeit a little pricey. Good location within stumbling distance of all your house parties and fraternity row.

Do not live at Towers if you don't want to pledge a frat. It's the dorm for aspiring Greeks and if you are not pledging, you will hate it. Jester is a much more diverse dorm and is not lacking for social life.

Other friends lived in the honors quad (obviously academic), San Jac (modern and pricey) and Whitis Court. The friends in Whitis liked it a lot - off the beaten path and quiet.

Anyone have any gems in WC?

Currently living in a 3 bedroom/2.5 bath for $666.66 w/ parking, a good price for WC I believe. But rent is going up for the next year and I'm trying to look for a place in the same range.

I would try to live at Jester because that's where the most will be going on and you might find it easier to meet people. When I left UT last year they were building some nice off campus dorms near 21 Rio I think it should be finished now. Not sure about the pricing or anything but it looked pretty cool from the pictures while they were building it.

I live in Carothers (Honors Quad). It's not the most social place or the most posh, but it gets the job done. Whatever you do, do not stay in Andrews. There is construction on the building adjacent to it through at least the end of this year.

The new freshman dorm by 21 rio is Calloway House...I would suggest Calloway over anything else...it is brand new, very nice. But if that's something you're interested in you need to jump on it now...the demand for it will be pretty high, but it's the nicest place you could live freshman year and social life there won't be lacking as it's pretty big. Are you planning on going greek? Are you Jewish? If you're planning on pledging Sammy or ZBT live in towers...that's where the jewish greek life freshmen live (both guys and girls) if not, there's no reason to live in towers as it's a dump and full of **** heads. You'll be able to find the social scene no matter what dorm you live in though, so I wouldn't make that a factor in where you live. Also, living with a friend is nice, but trust me, you will make many new friends...you just have to remember that as a freshman everyone is in the same boat as you - everyone's new and looking to meet new people.

As for on campus, which if that's what you're thinking, great, My picks would be Duren, San Jac, and as a last resort Jester. Duren and San Jac are among the nicer places to live on campus...and if you like sorority girls or are pledging Fiji/Sigma Chi Duren is across the street from SRD and Fiji and right down the road from Sigma Chi

If you are planning on pledging I could give you much more advice on that, just let me know.

    good luck!

From what I've heard, Calloway is likely out of spots already, but yeah, that would've been awesome. I am Jewish and am about 50/50 on pledging, so those are a few of the reasons why I'm considering the Towers, despite it being a dump and full of **** heads, LOL.

then yeah, you have some pretty good reasons to live in Towers...I'd say you strongly consider it, especially if you pledge you'll be close to all of your pledge brothers which I think has a lot of value...I lived close to my pledge brothers my freshman year and it was a blast. It is in a great location as well, I'll give it that
