You cant call yourself a Rockets fan and not even have Ralph Sampson shot against the Lakers on that list.

Sadly, for me, my first iconic NBA moment is the Stockton 3.

its not on the list, but it was reggie's game winning 3 pointer against the bulls in the 98 ECF game 4... i was hooked then... i was rooting for indiana because everone wanted the bulls to win...

then reggie did it again in 2002 first round game 5 against the nets... although they lost, he did hit that miracle three to force ot... then dunked on 3 guys to force 2nd ot... that was just awesome...

This was pretty epic, I think we went up 2 games at this point.

I think I was in 11th grade, before that it was Stevie Francis era.. not much there lol, not really aware of sports during the championship, or after that.

    77/78 NBA Finals

I had to stay up late and watch it on delayed programming. Big E got his ring. Bullets in 7!

    Tracy 13 in 33. - Rockets
I fell in love with the rockets just by seeing Yao Mingus determination to come back and finish the game in the playoffs in round 2.

From around the NBA. I don't remember but I would say it was D wade vs. celtics where he made many shots and stared at his hand. That made me start watching all of nba.

    Easily the Ralph Sampson shot.

And under the radar moment for me was Larry Bird winning the first three 3 point contests. That was quantifiable proof that was he was LEGEND (and for some reason my family was big into Larry Bird even more than Rockets).

In the first 3 point contest in the final round, Bird actually BANKED IN a 3 point shot off the glass on his only try doing it.

(On Larry Bird again) Its the first game Rocket and Celtics play against each other after their Finals appearance. After the Celtics ripped the heart of Houston.

Then Bird has to go and do this effortlessly to rub it in even MORE against Houston...

(Bill Worrell on the call - "OOoooOh..NO" )

But for sure EVERYONE the next day was trying that shot at the local courts

When the NBA was FANTASTIC! (David Stern is a douche but he sure knew how to promote the sport.)

I would have voted for the MJ Shot, but in 98 I was only 5. I know all those moments really well, but I can't claim them. And there was pretty large gap between iconic moments for the Rockets.

So although I've watched, played, and loved basketball my entire life. My 1st rockets iconic moment was probably Tmac game winning 3 against the Mavs in the 2005 playoffs. The one where he brushed his chin afterwords. I was 12 at the time.

Mr. Z, to clarify once again. This thread topic (and poll) is for non-Rockets related iconic moments.

Maybe I wasn't as clear as I should've been. My bad. But had it been my intention to ask about the first iconic Rockets moment, I would have certainly posted that thread in the GARM.

That being said, I realize others are posting their first great Rockets memories too, and that's ok. I'm not gonna go agro about it.

On a side note, please don't question my Rockets fandom. I am a diehard Rocket fanatic who cried tears of joy when the team moved from Hofheinz to the Summit. There are at least 30 more off-the-court Rockets memories I could rattle off (autograph sessions w/ Dream; photo ops w/ Jim Petersen, Allen Leavell, Reid, Sleepy, etc.; fundraisers w/ Rudy T foundation, camps w/ Lucas; bar chats w/ Horry, Willis, Malone, Sleepy; occassional talks w/ Clyde on the turn at Memorial golf course...) I could really go on and on. ;)

Getting teased in '86 for being a Houston fan when all the Aussie Kids were Boston, Lakers, New York or Detroit fans.

I used to argue that Olajuwon was a better player because he was picked before Jordan, but basketball on TV back in the day in Australia was very rare. I had a friend record on VHS the NBA Action programs & lend me his basketball videos: learn to dribble with Magic, Come Fly with me etc.

I had just taken up Basketball at the PYC in 5th or 6th grade and saw the Twin Towers & instantly fell in love! (I was also a Geto Boys fan & decided to rep H-Town from that point on...)

I have to admit that I really liked Magic Johnson & the way the Bad Boys played dirty but I just loved the big centers after reading about Wilt's achievements and thought that centers were the most important players on a team...we had a number 1 center in Olajuwon!

Also, I feel incredibly blessed that I somehow had the luck to have only attended 15-20 Rockets games in my life and somehow TWO of them were great enough to already have been mentioned in this thread. Nachbar-Malone, my only Rockets playoff game ever...and 13 in 33 (Eff yeah I stayed).

The first moment that really got me into basketball? Houston versus UCLA in the Astrodome in 1968, the "moment" being the buzzer going off, and the Coogs walking away with the win. The rest of my family got to watch it at home, while I listened to it on the radio at a drive-in theater in Southeast Houston, pissing off the chick I was with, who would rather have been making out, the silly girl.

    The Game of the Century!

My sister went to high school with Ken Spain.

Elvin Hayes became my hero, and led me to the San Diego Rockets. To this day, it shocks me a bit that the Coogs won that game. You have to have been around then in the days of John Wooden's Bruins and their incredible winning streak. That Houston might actually win seemed out of the question. Elvin scored 29 points in the first half alone! 52,693 fans came to the Astrodome to see the game in person, and the first regular season NCAA college basketball game was broadcast nationally live, and watched by 12 million-plus across the country. It changed basketball. Changed it forever. I was lucky that the game was replayed in Houston several times over the next week, so I did get to see it, as well as hear it.

Tracy McGrady got me into basketball.
So sad to see him fall off so damn quickly.
