So internal secession is cool now? If you dont like your government, secede from it and make your own state. This is just pouting because Colorado's demographics (combined with a Republican party run by idiots) have created a government run entirely by Democrats. And while I sympathize with those that are stuck with governments that they dont exactly like (hell I did all those years I lived in Texas), that doesn't mean you get to secede and make your own state.

Eventually Puerto Rico will be. They voted for statehood in the last referendum. But seeing as how that would guarantee Democrats two additional Senators and probably a few representatives, there's no way Republicans would let that slide. Republicans wont even give DC a voting representative because that would also give Democrats an additional seat in the House.
1) This would not be secession from the Union. The Constitution explicitly authorizes formation of states from within states (ala W. VA) 2) You express disdain for the idea of breaking off and forming a separate government, but that's exactly the reasoning used for own declaration of independence.
Pluralism involves many different kinds of people living and cooperating together, not cloistering themselves into their own ghettoes of like-minded people. We do 'get our way', but it's in community. They have county and city governments to customize governance to the local tastes. It would be foolish to forsake the advantages of corporate action over comparatively trivial poltical disagreements. I think there are 3 good reasons for political subdivision. (1) To create a unit small enough to be manageable. Not too much trouble on this front. (2) To recognize and account for differences in the needs of the people based on geography that has a very practical impact on people's lives. In Colorado, there may be some geographic division, I suppose especially around water-rights, but I'm not sure it's worth the trade-off. (3) To accomodate strong cultural divisions that will keep people from getting along (language, religion, racism). Coloradans don't really have cultural divisions, only disagreements on governance. And practically, how would North Colorado operate? They have no population and therefore no tax base. Their biggest town has less than 100k people. Granted, they are probably small government types anyway, but how do they have money to do anything at all? Given the small size, the thin population, and the rural demographic, it would probably be the poorest state in absolute dollars in the country. It's one thing when a powerful region like southern California wants to go it alone, and entirely another when a region that is already being subsidized by wealthier and more populous areas think they can be independent. It's lucky for them that it's all bluff.

Having 80 states would be better if it resulted in people having more say in their government. Imagine how folks in El Paso feel about being governed by the Texas state legislature, when in essense, they're part of New Mexico. I don't think there should be as many restrictions on this. If they can muster the political will to do this locally, neither Colorado nor the federales should be stopping it. Hell, if North Colorado wanted to be their own country, I would be alright with it.
You dont want that. My family is from India and our home start just got partitioned in a roughly similar manner to this Colorado proposal. It starts a really dangerous slippery slope. Once a few areas get their way, you see internal secessionist movements everywhere. It's a huge problem in India now. State boundaries are always under threat because everyone wants to split off and form their own provincial governments. I do agree with you about the issue of representation. I think a safer solution is expanding the size of Congress. Our Congressional districts are getting larger and larger because we capped the size of Congress which to me is nuts. It results in Congressional lines that no longer represent communities and requires combining different communities that were historically separate. The same goes for state governments as well. Texas's Senate districts are even larger than US Congressional Districts because for some dumb reason we capped Senate districts at 31. Canada expands its parliament as its population grows. We need to do the same.
