Why? Because a grown man had misconceptions about the world then actually learned something?

Not as much as that writer wanted to do to Batum.

I agree with most. You have a nice job. Boo freakin hoo.

He lost when he let feelings get in the way. He should have ran that Batum story right away. Survivor of the fittest. Nice guys finish last.

It's not about misconceptions. It's about wanting people to be honest. He's not a dumbass. He knows players are going to be "players". But when you get a relationship with someone where you're pretty much talking all the time for a while you kinda expect that friendship to stay. Not to have everything controlled by an agent.

It also sucks to be constantly lied to and treated like an idiot by players. Even if you know it's all in the game it doesn't mean the game is stupid.

His mistake was wanting to befriend the players. A journalist should keep an emotional distance between himself and the subject(s) being covered.

He wanted what he did to be more than just a job, can't fault him for that. That said, he'll be doing himself a favor if he learns not to take things so seriously.

One of the best NBA beat writers out there. He would respond to emails when he didn't even know the person if it was a worthy question. Will be missed.

I think it's hard not to think that some relationship will be created when you're spending so much time around these players. But yeah it was definitely a mistake that's left him jaded.

It's one of the first things they teach in journalism school.

Your job is your job. He's an idiot for not reporting the story.

This is why the Rockets clearly separate the teams beat writer(Friedman) from the outside-sourced beat writer (Feigan).

Friedman is the best in the business at what he does, but what he does is completely different than that of Jonathan Feigan (also very good) or Mark Berman(meh).

Friedman understands, and presents himself as a member of the organization. Every sentence he writes, and the way he presents himself is with the organizations best interests at hand as if he was standing right next to Daryl Morey when he writes his pieces. He gives as much access to the fans as he can without creating bias & spilling rumors.

Feigan is there from a 3rd party for the other juicy details the fans want access to. They are allowed somewhat of an insider access to allow more opinions to be shared among the fans and media.

Royce White is a perfect example of how these two entities would treat this situation. For Feigan, he's going to be someone that positive or negative, will be someone you will have to write articles about... because the fans will have an opinion on either way.

For Friedman, Royce White (at the start of training camp) became BAD for business so he was no longer covered(also wasn't covered for legal reasons). Once Royce became a negative for the organization.... he's someone Friedman should, and wouldn't want to give a second of publicity to.

He didn't have to lie about him, but he sure as hell didn't have to go out of his way to give him a platform for negative publicity. Again.... he represents the organizations best interests to promote the team.

It seems to me that Jason Quick didn't draw the line in the sand as to what his role there really was to do. He probably wasn't viewing himself as a member of the organization who is there for the sole purpose of marketing the team to the fans.

If Quick wanted to be more of a Jonathan Feigan type of beat writer giving the fans the rumors and drama they were interested in, its best to separate all personal relationships with the players from your job of writing about them.

He reminds me of the Zoe Barnes character on House of Cards

Wouldn't surprise me if he gets his news scoop the same way she does

So what was the Batum story that he wasn't allowed to run?
