My girlfriend went to LSU for her undergrad and Notre Dame for her Masters. She's a HUGE college football fan, and very knowledgeable about the game. I try not to hold it against her that she's an SEC fan (though she hates 'Bama, as an true LSU grad should).
Don't get why some men bash female fans. Not all of them are clueless like some make them out to be. Meanwhile you have a whole bunch of clueless guys discussing sports. Just visit a barbershop and you will hear it.
Anything that takes their mind off the fact they are nothing but a life support system for a vagina is fine by me. Knock yourself out ladies!
That more than sums up my view. I do NOT get into caring about who's genuinely loyal I have little problem with "bandwagon" fans. WHO CARES - Everyone should be invited to the party. Some true fans start out as bandwagon fans. Its just if you call it like you see it, its plenty females are in there for the social gathering element. And cuz emotions run high in competition maybe some of the "drama" is a draw itself. And then of course sports can serve as just general entertainment and pointless escapism. I'm near L.A., and a great deal of female athletes from California schools make the Olympics. But it seems lots of the female fans now are suspiciously having sports interest to enhance their Instagram and social media portfolios (see: Beavis Stiffler posts) Its mostly if you have expectations from the start really. If expectations are low then its not even a big deal. Its when you have audacity to have hope from the beginning. Its when you grant girls that expectation that they're knowledgeable and follow sports custom like the guys, or close to that level. But then lots, so, just, don't... Females Gon' Fem. (Though in reverse its not like guys support women sports strongly, its for even more obvious superficial reasons.)
Obviously you can't over-generalize here. Male sports fans are also all over the map. The really annoying fan of either gender is the one who follows only the media-luster popular teams and doesn't really know jack-squat about the sport. When I met a female coworker 9 years ago, she was, "Oh! I love the NBA too!" "What's your team?" "The Lakers." "Aw Gawd!" But I was willing to forgive her a little bit because she had a great rack and I'm not above objectifying women. And I'd say, "Yeah, well, I also like KG, he's a douche, but he's unbelievably good." "Who?" "KG." Pause. "Kevin GARNETT?" "I don't know him. I just like Kobe." "Kobe? What about [Insert Famous Player Name Here]? And what about [Insert another name here]." Blank look. "I don't know them. I just like Kobe." "You mean, Kobe 'Colorado A$$ Rape' Bryant?" "Oh, what was she supposed to expect? Go up to a hotel room...." Then there was the dude sitting near me at Buffalo Wild Wings. Talking about his fave team the Lakers. I couldn't help it: "I suppose your favorite football team is the Cowboys?" "Yep." "And your favorite baseball team is the Yankees? Don't tell me. Am I right?" "Yep." And he didn't even have the grace to look ashamed.
If a person likes Lakers/Kobe (usually black males), I immediately ask them if they wore an MJ jersey back in the 90s and if they could name me one player who played for the Lakers between the years of 1992 and 1995. So far I have only met self-proclaimed Lakers fan who could do this.
Women aren't very prone to tribalism and are often less superficial than men. So, it comes natural to them to root for specific players instead of a team.

I think football is probably a better study of this phenomenon than basketball. A lot of the women I know root for a football team based on who their quarterback is. For example, many of them will just root for whatever team Peyton Manning is on. Guys do this for sure, but I suspect it's different motivations. Most chachis who claim to love Lebron and Kobe just want to be associated with whichever team is associated with winning, rather than any sort of pride or loyalty.
I'm happy my wife's facebook is locked, so Beavis Stiffler can't blast her pics all over CF. Man, I hate when I don't figure this out till mid-conversation.
I can only imagine what Beavis' hard drive is like. Oh my Female fan here. Yeah we come in different kinds. Player Only Fans, Yay team spirit! fans, and the real fans. I'm sure men sports fans have their divisions as well. What sucks about being a female fan is the burden of proof. I'm not really a fan until I prove it. A guy is usually assumed a real fan unless proven otherwise. Even when I meet a fellow female fan, I'm skeptical about if she even knows what the RGV Vipers are or can name any Rockets bench players. They have to prove it. I can tell when I meet a guy and say "I'm a Rockets fan," he'll give me this, "Oh okay" look. Then a short while of me talking about the team, he'll say, "Oh, you really are a fan." I'm obsessed with Rockets apparel. I make a lot of Rockets related crafts. You could say I have a lot of team spirit. Sometimes, I think some people may think I'm just a yay team! fan because part of my discussion isn't just X's and O's. I played basketball for 12+ years. I played college ball. I know basketball. I keep up with articles and news about the team. I hate when I receive tweets from guys that totally seem like a, "This girl doesn't know, let me explain it to her," response. Sorry my entire knowledge of that couldn't be communicated in 140 characters, or you totally missed that my tweet was a joke. I'm a team supporter. I don't follow my favorite players to other teams, or hardly keep up with them after they leave. I really liked Dragic but I don't watch the Suns broadcast or check his box score numbers all of the time. However, it wouldn't make me less of a Rockets fan if I did keep up with him or another player after they've left. I wouldn't say that it is solely a female sports fan characteristic of following a player to whatever team he goes to. I've seen male Cavs fans become Heat fans with LeBron. Male Colts fans become Broncos fans with Manning. But you have to factor in too, that females are of a different gender than the males playing the sport. Females my be attracted to a player's appearance, personality or fame. (Most) males don't have that as a factor. Males probably don't dream of ending up married to that player and having his offspring. I wonder what it would be like if the roles were reversed. If female sports dominated the interest in professional sports. Would the men be POF's? DEFINITELY YES.

I laugh at dudes who cheer for multiple pro teams in the same sport. Blame the overall wussifacation of males in today's society.
