I weigh about 180 and am 6 ft tall. I want to slim down just a bit, I DON'T want to be skinny though, I like my average weight.

So, I was wondering if running half a mile every day (not much, I know) , will help me slim down?

I want to be quicker / jump higher on the basketball court, so will this do anything in improving me in those areas?

It's better than not jogging a half mile a day.

High intensity cardio is miles better than low intensity cardio for weight loss.
Look into HIIT (High intensity interval training) drills. Or just play basketball.
Also, look into weight lifting and work on your lower body muscles and your core. On top of that weight lifting will increase your metabolism and will help keep you slim, so long as you maintain a regular diet.

You're looking at ballpark 80 calories for that half mile. It's better than laying around obviously, but don't expect to see a major change.

Start with that 0.5 and add a block every other day. Work up to a 5k. More achievable than you think, and that distance will start to pay dividends.

Be careful though, if you jog the 1/2 a mile a day backwards, you'll def. put on weight.

Sorry. Dumb answer... But obviously, any form of exercise and good eating habits will help you slim down.

True, but by itself, this won't help anyone slim down.

OP, if this 1/2 mile per day is a start to better eating habits and increased physical activity, you are on your way.

I also recommend HIIT. Waaaay more bang for your buck (time) than jogging.

This is what I was gonna say lol. But how/why did you come up with that distance as a limit?

not rly. Ever heard the expression 'working up an appetite'? Exercise is a terrible way to burn fat. dieting is the only thing that works.

Your response pissed me off. I'm going to jog to the fridge and grab a beer.

Jogging a 1/2 mile a day in a swimming pool might work.

jogging half a mile = ~100 calories burned?

you can cut down your sodas, juices, and other pointless calories you take in daily..

You dont want to just jog. You could lose alot of weight and look too skinny.

Jogging is a good form of exercise, but you should also incorporate weightlifting to your workout regimen.

I just ran a mile before my workout and burned 110 calories...

So, if you are going half a mile, lets assume thats 55 calories.

Every 3500 calories equals one pound. In other words, you need to do that for over two months in order to lose one pound of weight, with everything else being equal.

So, to answer your question...yes, it will help you slim down. But, honestly, jogging half a mile is pretty pointless.

You're better off doing like five 100 yard sprints with a minute break in between if you want a quick workout.

It's pretty simple. Burn more calories than you intake an you'll lose weight

    Jogging is overrated.

Just go lift some weights. Muscle burns more calories at all times. I have to force my self to eat so I don't lose my gains. Im at 240lbss right now my ideal weight shoukd be 215. Is easier for me to lose weight right now and get shredded because I build a good foundatio of muscle rather than me just trying to run xxx miles.

Reasons people don't get the body they want.

    1. Too much cardio and only cardio
    2. Eating habits. Not consuming protein, calorie deficit
    3. Working on extremities rather than core. By that I mean too much isolation

    4. Going to heavy and poor form.
    5. No mind to muscle connection.
    6. Not getting help of supplements.
    7. Thinking they are overtraining. 5x10 insetead of 3x10

unless you're an elderly woman with bad knees and a hip replacement you should be embarrassed that you even asked this question. 1/2 a mile? really???

if you're not too tired after your 1/2 a mile trek maybe you can squeeze in 4 pushups or even 5 sit ups.
