It's a lot if you're flushing it down the toilet, which is what this basically amounts to.

 

Most people have no idea about how unique the history of the Battleship Texas is. It's a damn shame.

I truly hope this city doesn't vote to spend hundreds of millions to do this.

 

Yep, a lot of firsts happened on the USS Texas. Granted, as a kid I was always more impressed with USS Alabama in Mobile. WWII era ships were so much bigger with larger guns than dreadnoughts. Yeah, I was kind of a nerd.

boring.... there are many important battleships in almost every coastal city. however there is one and only one astrodome!!!

 

The Romans should have torn down the Colosseum what a dump. This is why Houston has no history. The astrodome is the eight wonder of the world.

Hoping sarcasm comparing the Colosseum to the AtrociousDome. USS Texas was set to see in 1912 and saw action in so many historical battles- Tampico, WW1, WW2 in Africa, Normandy, Iwo Jima and Okinawa. I am biased though since my grandfather was commissioned on this ship early in WW2 before he joined the British Commando's.

The dome is just pure junk. Once it's gone nobody will even care. Tear the sumbitch down.

 

It's currently rotting away, just like the coliseum.

Think people will pay $$ to see it in its current state?

 

Or better yet. Do you think people will pay $$ to see it in 2000 years? (Assuming it is still standing, of course, LOL)

 

$8 to save a historic building is worth it. It's the only historic thing houston has.

 

I hope you realize its not really the 8th wonder of the world...that's just a term that Houstonians came up with to describe the awesomeness of it.

There are hundreds of other things that have been termed the 8th wonder of the world.

 

Then why not keep it as is, and sell tickets to go tour it?

There's nothing historic about turning a stadium into an exhibit/events hall that serves no real purpose, could easily become dated, and will cost taxpayer money to build.

How about we decide what to do with it after we're done paying for the latest "renovation" that made it "state of the art" (only to make it obsolete just 7 years later).

 

Not to mention, this city desperately needs convention space

 

It's the only dreadnought left, though.

There are 8 battle ships in the US that are monuments. The USS Texas WAS THE FIRST to become a monument at a coastal city.

One of only 6 ships left to have fought in WWI and WWII, brew. Have to save her.

 

They're tearing down MSG in 10 years and that place has much more history than the Dome.

If you want to preserve the dome/history, then you really should support this idea.

A convention center will get dated and end up just delaying the inevitable demolition. A park could stand for hundreds of years with minimal maintenance. Plus it would be enjoyed by everyone, not just tourists. It could be a gathering place for people before and after events at Reliant. That would be great. I could see there being real historical significance of keeping the frame of the first domed building in the world intact.
