I do not know what it is, because the music kind of SUCKS across the board ... regardless of genre: rock, country, rap, R&B, and especially pop music.

I honestly find music, like The Beatles, Pink Floyd, and even Bruce Springsteen (on the right day) refreshing to most (MAINSTREAM) music nowadays. I hate to say it, but I think its the record companies killing the industry ...

Can someone explain all the Journey hate? Or am I missing a running joke?

I'm not a Journey fan, it's just surprising to hear multiple people talking as if "Journey sucks" is taken for granted.

I love them because they supported Napster back in the day.

Brian Wilson was just trying to copy Rubber Soul with Pet Sounds.

Beyond everything else, recording engineers love the Beatles probably more than anybody else. They do a ton of things with arranging and using novel recording techniques that people love to copy, and would copy more but they would make everyone sound like the Beatles if they did.

The Beatles also single-highhandedly built the reputation of the single most expensive piece of vintage outboard recording gear, the Fairchild 670. A good vintage 670 will cost north of $30,000. The compressor is known for squishing the crap out of Ringo's drums and all the pianos the Beatles recorded.

Really, any piece of vintage equipment of a type that the Beatles used will automatically be insanely expensive. Studer J37, Neumann U47, AKG C12, I think Lenny Kravitz paid some insane amount of money for the Redd.67 console that the Beatles used for Sgt. Peppers...

They really did pioneer a ton of things that recording engineers copy the hell out of to this day. If you've never listened to a song and thought about how well the guitars or pianos or whatever were made to sound, or how interesting it is that the structure of the bass line changes from the first verse to the second, then you are missing a lot of what a bunch of people love about the Beatles.

Yes, "Don't Stop Believing" is now among the most overplayed songs in rock, their sound is a bit glossed-over (sacrificing sound for feeling), and considering that there's not really that much of a difference between Boston, REO Speedwagon, Styx, Foreigner and Journey, the fact that they're hyped so much more than those other bands creates a backlash.

Agree it was their experimenting that made some great songs along with some not so great but that happens. Also they released 6 albumns in 1964. 3 in 65. 2 in 66. 2 in 67. 1 in 68. 2 in 69 and 1 in 70. Thats 17 albums in 7 years. They created Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, the White album, Abbey Road as well as many others.

I don't hate Radio Head, I just don't understand the worship. Same goes for the Pixies, Arcade Fire, and The Stokes.

I half way agree. I "worship" OK Computer" (and The Bends to a degree). All the stuff after is kind of hit or miss, IMHO.

Boston I thought had a unique sound and I wouldn't compare them to the rest of this group .. Loved the early days of Journey when they had the 2 vocalist . Styx and Foreigner both rocked in the 70's but seemed to lose the edge as the 80's rolled around .. One thing about all those bands is that chicks loved them .

We're just going to have to disagree on this. I sent out an email to about 50 friends of mine who all love U2 to ask them what is their favorite U2 album of all time? EVERY single one of them have said "The Joshua Tree".

I'm in my early 20's and I love the Beatles. What I can't stand is most of the music that is popular today. I loved the music in the 90's when I was growing up and I would much rather prefer to listen to that than the crap that is played today.

I don't get all hair metal bands. I don't care that they wear makeup and all that but to even call yourself metal is stupid. These are pop bands. There is no shame in being a pop star.

Speaking of metal i also don't get the ego that Metal it self had during the 80's early 90's. Everything that came out was somehow a sub genre of metal. If something new comes out they slap metal on it, for example you have heavy metal, Hardcore metal, hair metal, rap, grunge, alternative and everything out there is somehow metal.

For those of you who hate Bruce Springsteen - go back and listen to his earlier albums, especially Born to Run and Darkness on the Edge of Town. I never could get into him either at first but after listening to those albums, I became a fan.

I'm glad to see other people mentioning The Smiths/Morrisey. Last time we had a thread like this, I mentioned them and got DESTROYED.

When I was in high school, me and my friends were pretty much musical pioneers. We liked RHCP before anyone had heard of them. Same for REM. Same for U2. (this was the mid 80's, btw)

All my friends always went on and on about The Smiths. Whenever I listened, it just sounded like a whiney british guy singing the same song over and over again. I tried to get into them later....and I think I may hate them even more now.
