I believe he meant to say that he hopes that most of our top 10 prospects are on our opening day roster (I think?)

21 homers for 21-year-old Domingo Santana.

    And Teoscar Hernandez homered again.

Santana hit his 21st home run. I know the average and OBP isnt where it needs to be and him k'ing alot is nothing new, but i wouldnt mind Luhnow keeping him in AA next season for half of the year and move him to AAA if he improves. He just turned 21.

Comparing Buxton's numbers at CR to Correa's at QC is like comparing numbers from Coors Field to the numbers at the Astrodome.
CR is very hitter friendly, while QC is very pitcher friendly.
The left field wall is 343 feet in Quad Cities.
    315 in Cedar Rapids.

I hear all the hype from Sickels and tellit and I gotta say: I don't get it. The tools sound nice but thus far he hasn't put up a particularly good statistical season yet. That and he's not young relative to the level either.

A .770 OPS in low-A is nice but nothing that merits the hype he gets from prospects hounds. Santana has a higher OPS at Corpus (2 levels higher) and is only 2 months older. That's a much bigger deal.

Definitely agree with this. With guys like Hernandez, it's nice to just acknowledge that the potential is there but not get excited until they put up good seasons at Corpus in an age-appropriate season.

Well I don't think anyone has ranked Teoscar above Santana. I'd like to see how he does in the higher levels, but I do like him as a prospect myself

In other words, a routine fly ball in Houston.

I don't think a ball on Tal's Hill is exactly routine.

Please keep in mind that Teoscar had a late start to his career.

I had a friend that was a big St Louis fan back when Barker patrolled center. We would watch the games together. He would always get so mad when Pujols or anther Cardinal would hit a ball to Tal's Hill only to be caught. I would always play it calmly as, "It is just a routine fly ball. What's the big deal?"

That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Bullpen on Saturday put me in a pretty bad mood. Pretty bad mood. So instead, I'll be giving you a giant weekend recap. Saturday's games first.

    Saturday Stories

Gotta love the Cal League... give up 30 runs one night; two hits and no runs for a complete game shutout the next. Great job by Smith.
— Jeff Luhnow (@jluhnow) August 11, 2013

    Springers gonna Springer

    Dramatics in Corpus!

    Recap

Las Vegas 4, Oklahoma City 1

Well, that Springer homer in the 1st was all the Redhawks could muster up.

Jake Buchanan had a bare minimum quality start, allowing 7 hits (solo homer), walking 2, and striking out 2. Jason Stoffel allowed a run on 2 hits and fanned 3 in 2 innings.

    Corpus Christi 3, Arkansas 2

The Hooks walked off with a 3-2 win for the 2nd straight game.

David Rollins allowed a homer to former Lamar Consolidated star Randal Grichuk to lead off the game, then was pretty good for 6 2/3. He gave up 2 (1 earned) on 5 hits, walked 2, and struck out 5. Andrew Robinson allowed 2 hits and struck out 2 in 2 1/3 scoreless.

After Grichuk put Arkansas in the lead right off the bat, Preston Tucker tied the game in the 3rd with his 9th homer as a Hook (24 season). An error from Max Stassi allowed Travis Witherspoon to take the lead in the 5th. Erik Castro led off the bottom of the 9th with his 15th homer of the season, and Jonathan Meyer ended it with his 14th of the year. Domingo Santana had the one hit that wasn't a homer.

    Lancaster 6, High Desert 0

One night after getting absolutely demolished, the Jethawks pitching staff got a much, much needed respite as Kyle Smith dominated the Mavericks.

Smith was rebounding from a first start that saw him unable to get out of the 1st inning. I'd say that's a pretty good recovery. He allowed 2 hits, both singles, and struck out 9.

Delino DeShields was hit by a pitch to lead off the game. He moved to 2nd when Nolan Fontana walked, and then a wild pitch put them on 3rd and 2nd, respectively. DeShields scored the 1st run of the game as Andrew Aplin grounded into a fielder's choice, throwing out Fontana at 3rd.

The Jethawks were actually being no-hit despite leading 1-0. In the 7th, that changed in a hurry. Chris Epps led off the inning with a single, and one batter later, Jesse Wierzbicki sent his first California League homer out (7 season). Tyler Heineman hit a double and came homme on a ground-rule double from Joe Sclafani. Fontana finished it off with a 2-run single in the 9th.

    Wisconsin 7, Quad Cities 0

The River Bandits were 1-hit as they dropped the series opener. Danry Vasquez's single was that 1 hit.

Joe Bircher went 5 innings and allowed 6 runs on 9 hits (2 homers) and struck out 4. Dan Minor allowed a solo homer to Victor Roache (plug for Georgia Southern alum juicystream), who victimized Bircher earlier. He walked 2 and struck out 3 in 2 innings. Pat Christensen threw 2 scoreless, allowing 2 hits and striking out 4. He also walked his first batter as a pro.

    Jamestown 3, Tri-City 2

Erich Weiss, a former UT standout, hit a sac fly in the 9th that put the Jammers ahead. That turned out to be the difference as Jamestown took the middle game of this series.

Down 2-0 in the 3rd, D'Andre Toney led off the inning with a double, and a single from Conrad Gregor brought him home and put TC on the board. Gregor finished 3-3. James Ramsay hit a solo homer (3) in the 5th.

Randall Fant went 4 innings and allowed 2 runs (1 earned) on 6 hits, walked 2, and struck out 2. Albert Minnis allowed a hit and fanned 2 over 2 scoreless frames. Troy Scribner took the loss in his ValleyCats debut; the run that scored on the sac fly came off him and was unearned. He allowed a hit and fanned 5 in 3 innings.

    Greeneville 5, Kingsport 2

The Appy Astros finally put the Mets away with 2 in the 8th.

After Alfredo Gonzalez led off the 3rd with a triple, Parker Hipp brought him home with a double. Juan Santana scored on an error in the 6th. Gonzalez made his presence felt again by homering (1) in the 7th, and Ariel Ovando sealed the deal with a 2-run double in the 8th.

Jandel Gustave went 4 innings and allowed a run on 4 hits and fanned 5. Kevin Ferguson allowed a hit and fanned 3 over 2 scoreless. Ryan Connolly allowed a run on 2 hits and struck out 1 in the 7th. Gonzalo Sanudo allowed 2 hits and struck out 6 in 2 innings to close out the game. Yes, all of his outs were strikeouts.

GCL Braves 6, GCL Astros 2

The Braves scored 2 runs in 3 innings. The Astros scored 2 runs in 1 inning.

The Kissimmee Stros got their 2 runs in the 4th off RBI singles from Ydarqui Marte and Luis Reynoso. Marte was 3-4.

Agapito Barrios went 5 innings and allowed 4 runs on 6 hits (2-run homer), walked 1, and struck out 3. Reymin Guduan walked 1 and struck out 7 over 3 scoreless. Samil De Los Santos allowed a run (inherited) on a hit as he failed to record an out in the 9th. Joe Musgrove allowed an unearned run of his own, walking 1 and striking out 1 in the 9th.

DSL Red Sox 7, DSL Astros 1

The Academy got perfectoed for 6 innings. So, basically, they got dominated in all facets of the game.

Randy Cesar's RBI single was their only run.

Elieser Hernandez went 5 innings and allowed 3 runs on 4 hits and struck out 5. Juan Hernandez allowed 2 runs on 4 hits in the 6th. Starlyng Sanchez struck out 1 in a 1-2-3 7th. Victor Mesa got 2 outs in the 8th, but allowed 2 runs on a hit (not a homer), walked 1, and struck out 2. Yonquelys Martinez allowed 2 hits, walked 1, and struck out 1 in 1 1/3 innings.

And now, on to Sunday's action.

    Sunday Stories

He might be in Low-A, but Teoscar Hernandez is a reason why the Astros don't have to break the bank in the international market.

Tri-City heads into their All-Star break on a strong note.

    Could Corpus get the sweep?

    Recap

Las Vegas 4, Oklahoma City 3

The Redhawks got 3 in the top of the 4th, but the 51s answered with 2 in the bottom of the inning and 2 more in the 5th and shut down the OKC offense to take 3 of 4 in the series.

RedHawks in the 4th inning tonight: 3 runs, 4 hits. Other 8 innings: 0 runs, 1 hit.
— Alex Freedman (@azfreedman) August 12, 2013

Brandon Laird put the Redhawks on the board with an RBI groundout. The Redhawks then got a pair of RBI doubles from Jonathan Singleton and Jose Martinez. Marwin Gonzalez went 2-4 with a run scored.

In his AAA debut, David Martinez went 4 1/3 innings and allowed 4 runs (1 inherited) on 7 hits, walked 5, and struck out 3. Wade LeBlanc allowed a hit and fanned 4 over 1 2/3 scoreless. Jose Cisnero struck out 2 in a 1-2-3 7th, and Pat Urckfitz walked 1 and struck out 1 in a scoreless 8th.

The Redhawks will now kick off a 4-game series in Tuscon. Paul Clemens will start the opener against Matt Andriese at 7:05 Pacific.

This will be the last time that the Redhawks will face this incarnation of the franchise previously known as the Portland Beavers, the Albuquerque Dukes, the Spokane Indians, and the Los Angeles Angels. They'll be moving to El Paso next season.

    Arkansas 7, Corpus Christi 4

The Hooks couldn't get the sweep as Randal Grichuk had a perfect night for the Travs.

Domingo Santana hit an RBI infield single in the bottom of the 1st to tie the game at 1. In the 2nd, Erik Castro scored as Ronald Torreyes grounded into a force out. After Grichuk hit a 2-run homer in the 3rd, Santana responded with a solo shot (21) in the bottom of the inning to tie the game. The Travelers got on a 4-0 run to run way with it, though. Castro pulled a run back in the 8th with a solo homer (16). He and Santana finished with 2 hits apiece.

Kyle Hallock threw 4 innings and allowed 4 runs (3 earned) on 4 hits (2-run homer), walked 3, and struck out 3. Alex Sogard went 2 innings and allowed a 3-run homer to Grichuk in the 6th which more or less put the game away. He allowed 3 other hits and walked 2. Carlos Quevedo threw 3 scoreless and allowed a hit, walked 1, and fanned 2.

The Hooks will have today off, and then they will begin an Arkansas roadtrip.

    Lancaster 9, High Desert 8

The Jethawks took the rubber game as they broke a 6-6 tie with 3 in the 6th.

Delino DeShields doubled to lead off the game and scored on an RBI single from Carlos Perdomo. Chris Epps hit a sac fly to bring Perdomo home. Dan Gulbransen led off the 2nd with a homer (1, 4 season). Perdomo, who finished 3-5 with 3 runs scored, was back at it again, as he swatted a 3-run homer (2) in the 4th to tie the game at 6. A sac fly from Andrew Aplin gave the Jethawks a 7-6 lead. Jesse Wierzbicki hit an RBI double, and Gulbransen added a sac fly. Aplin now has 98 RBI on the season. Wierzbicki finished 3-5 with a run scored, and Heineman was 2-3.

Colton Cain went 6 innings and allowed 6 runs (5 earned) on 7 hits (solo homer), walked 2, and struck out 6. In his Lancaster debut, Gerardo Sanchez allowed 2 hits and struck out 3 over 2 scoreless. Travis Ballew gave up a 2-run homer to Steven Proscia in the 9th, which made it a 9-8 game, but he was able to close it out. He allowed another hit, walked 1, and struck out 2.

The Jethawks will have today off, and they'll be back home to open up a homestand. First up is Inland Empire for 3.

    Quad Cities 5, Wisconsin 0

The River Bandits got even as they blanked the Timber Rattlers, and Teoscar Hernandez delivered the fireworks.

Hernandez now has a dozen homers after this outburst. The first one was a 3-run shot in the 3rd and broke a scoreless tie. He provided the cherry with a 2-run homer in the 8th. He finished 3-4.

Brian Holmes allowed 3 hits, walked 1, and fanned 7 over 6 shutout innings. Zach Morton allowed 2 hits and walked 1 over 2 scoreless. Juan Minaya finished it out, as he gave up a hit and struck out 1 in the 9th.

In the series finale, Mark Appel makes his final start in a River Bandits uniform. He will face Austin Ross at 7:00.

    Tri-City 11, Jamestown 5

In their final game before the NYPL All-Star break, the ValleyCats took the series from the Jammers, thanks to a few well-timed outbursts.

After James Ramsay hit a 1-out double in the 1st, Conrad Gregor put the ValleyCats on the board by bringing him home with a single. One batter later, Mike Martinez hit a 2-run shot (8) off of Dovydas Neverauskas, a native of Lithuania. In the 2nd, Adam Nelubowich led off the inning with a single and advanced to 3rd on Jack Mayfield's single. He wound up scoring on a wild pitch, while Mayfield moved to 2nd. Chan-Jong Moon walked, and he and Mayfield advanced a base on a sac bunt from Ramsay. Tyler White sent them home with a 2-run single. TC got a pair of RBI singles from Ronnie Mitchell and Jake Rodriguez in the 5th. Nelubowich, who finished 2-4, doubled to lead off the 8th and ended up scoring on another wild pitch. Chan-Jong Moon drew another walk in the inning and scored on an errant pickoff throw from Jamestown pitcher Jared Lakind, who graduated from the same high school I went to. Same year too. Ramsay would also score on a wild pitch. Ramsay and Mitchell also had 2-hit evenings. Mitchell extended his hit streak to 6 games.

Evan Grills allowed 3 runs on 5 hits (solo homer), walked 2, and struck out 3. Charles Basford allowed a solo homer to Michael Fransoso and struck out 1 in the 6th. Kevin Comer went 2 innings and allowed a run on 2 hits and walked 2. Andrew Walter walked 1 and struck out 2 in a scoreless 9th.

The New York-Penn League All-Star Game will be tomorrow at 7:35 Eastern at Dodd Stadium in Norwich, Connecticut, the home of the Connecticut Tigers.

    Kingsport 7, Greeneville 2

The K-Mets were all over Austin Chrismon early and Jordan Mills late and stifled the Greeneville offense to take 2 of 3 in the series.

Both of the Appy Astros' runs came in the 5th. Alfredo Gonzalez hit an RBI double, and he scored on a single from Thomas Lindauer.

Chrismon went 4 innings and allowed 4 runs (2 earned) on 2 hits, walked 2, and struck out 5. Christian Garcia allowed a hit in a scoreless 5th. Mills allowed 3 runs on 5 hits (2-run homer), walked 1, and struck out 2 in 4 innings.

Greeneville is in Johnson City tonight. First on the docket is the matter of their game on July 22 that was suspended. That will start at 6:00 Eastern. The regularly scheduled game will follow soon after.

Since Appel did poorly tonight; how about a scouting report from Perfect Game on his start before this one. PG Link
