Disappointing to see this is getting just average reviews. I guess it's a fitting cap to one of the most disappointing summer movie seasons in years...
Just got back. Easily the best summer "popcorn action" flick this year so far. Story was great and action was really good as well. Was quite impressed overall. Would recommend to go see it.
Story was decent, Action was good. A step above District 9. Not saying much though, kinda expected a bit more.
I just saw Pacific Rim on Tuesday and thought it was wildly entertaining and Elysium was 'meh'. I mean, it was decent, but out of the movies I've seen somewhat recently (Star Trek, Iron Man, World War Z, Pacific Rim, Wolverine), I'd rank Elysium last.
It was a big meh for me. I really enjoyed District 9--its story was as intelligent as the action was fun--and so I was expecting something similar with Elysium. While I enjoyed watching the movie, it was definitely disappointing. It seems like one of those movies where the future world and its technologies (and the problems that arise from it) were thought up first and then they built a story around it. As such, while the universe is great conceptually, the story and characters weren't very strong or compelling to me. Oh well, maybe Blomkamp isn't the next sci-fi guy I was hoping for...
Hard to take Damon/Blomkamp seriously complaining about an Elysium lifestyle they themselves partake in.
This summer at the movies is easily one of the worst that I can remember. I'm really not looking forward to what fall has to offer.
Well I loved it. It's not quite on par with District 9, but just a step below. Seems like all the movies this Summer are enjoyable on some level, but none of them have completely hit it out of the park. Man of Steel, Pacific Rim and Elysium, came close, and probably Elysium the closest for me. But like everything else there are just a few minor things that could have been better or added that would have made all the difference. And please, please, please can filmmakers stop using a shaky-cam during up-close action sequences! Would have like to see more Max and Kruger fights. And for all the hype about the exoskeleton, I was left a little disappointed.
Just got back. Was a HUGE fan of District 9 and was VERY disappointed with this one. Very cool visual effects and universe, very bland story. WAAAY too preachy with the immigration/universal healthcare parallel. Felt like Avatar. Really pissed me off that this bland crap is why we don't have a District 9 sequel yet.
Good point. They should've hired hobos off the street to accurately portray the income disparity in the story... and of course, withhold all earnings from the movie from said hobos. Gotta keep it real!
