I actually agree with the highlighted portion of your post.....I'm shocked. On that single, very broad point we agree. Ohhhhh.......if only you had ended this paragraph a sentence earlier I could have agreed with all of it. So close........SO CLOSE!
Had a friend going to the Naval Academy after graduating in the top 10 of our graduating class. He was told to run with dark colored sweatpants and dark colored hoodie in Houston heat to prepare for training. He did that. Thankfully, no one shot him. I run indoors a lot...but I'm planning on running a half marathon in November...so my training starts up in earnest in September. You don't train for a half marathon by running indoors on a treadmill..and if it's raining or cold, then it's raining or cold...it could very well be raining and cold on the day of the race. I'm hoping I don't get shot while running...but I'm thinking since I'm white it probably won't be a problem. I'm not suggesting people won't judge me by appearance or my dress....they absolutely will. But wearing a hoodie doesn't earn one the kind of contempt that should somehow lend merit to others following us around with handguns. And if it does, the problem isn't with the one wearing the hoodie.
It didn't in the Zimmerman case either. The hoodie was only brought up by Zimmerman when asked asked what TM was wearing.
You're lost. For the 1,000th time: 1) Nothing was proven that GZ racially profiled TM 2) Nothing was proven that GZ profiled TM due to the hoodie. TM was walking in the rain in a manner that led GZ to believe he was on drugs, which led GZ to believe he was suspicious. And in fact, TM did have both mar1juana in his system as well as the fact that his body showed the effects of the drug lean. The whole garbage about hoodies and being black are nothing but a bunch of dullards falling for Al Sharpton and Jessie Jackson's race baiting. THINK, people, THINK.
I wasn't responding to GZ...I was responding to thumbs and his implication that I'm asking for trouble if I wear a hoodie.
where did I even mention race profiling? I just said profiling is a normal mechanism for being safe. I don't go, oh this black person is walking towards me, I should pull out my mace. Not everything is about black people. The stereotypes often are self-created. If your culture is welfare and gangs, the culture engenders fear and disdain. If your culture is hard work and generosity, the culture engenders warmth and kinship. A person, regardless of race, creed, sex, etc., at some point chooses his or her own culture. Where did he mention about race? Are only blacks on welfare and in gangs? Do blacks only produce fear and disdain? Blacks can't work hard or be generous? He never said a race, he just said your culture aka surroundings/environment. Anywho it is a choice at one point to take their own path and how they live life. I was raised in the ghetto from 5 years old to 12 years old, at that time, I could have join a gang and did some bad stuff, but I minded my own business and did my homework until my parents were able to move me out of there. So no I don't think I sounded like a fool when I said he didn't mention race, because he didn't.
I mean Europeans (aka Caucasians/ White people) are most certainly not Trayvon Martin. Why are you confused?
I believe it was drizzling that night, so for Trayvon to have his hoodie on makes sense. The hoodie seems to have been appropriated as a symbol by some. I told this story once before but back in June I stopped at the grocery store on a cool, drizzly morning. I happened to have on a hooded sweatshirt, so I put my hood up and walked briskly to the front dooe. Just so happens a BRINKS truck was parked there. The lady guard saw me rapidly approaching the door, in my hoodie, and eyed me and put her hand to her weapon. I don't think it would have happened without a hoodie on.... there were others going in as well, but she eyed me.
tell me what I don't understand, instead of telling me I'm a fool then. I been teased about my race/ethnicity pretty much everyday and because I was in ESL in elementary. I know what it's like to be look down upon and been ashamed of my ethnicity when I was in elementary. sounds like a cop out to me when you say oh you don't understand and not say why.
You seem to lack a basic understanding of the history of Africans in the Americas. I suggest you do your own research if you are really interested in learning. If not...then it's probably best you just avoid these kinds of discussions because your lack of knowledge on the subject is very obvious.
Because you used an inaccurate term to illustrate a loaded but ultimately muddled and dubious analogy.
Inaccurately implying that inhabitants of an entire continent are one race. Inaccurately categorizing all people of that particular race as inhabitants of that continent. Misleadingly insinuating that all individuals of the race of the person you initially referenced have hardships that individuals of other races don't, or that there are no ethnic sub-groups within the continent that you initially referenced that endure the same hardships you implied the person you initially referenced has.
Just out of curiosity, where did you get the idea that you can't train indoors for long distance runs? It may not be ideal, but you can definitely train indoors for marathons. For instance, I thought running on treadmills was a good way to learn to pace yourself. About 2 years ago, I trained for my first marathon mostly indoors because of convenience and ended up sub 4 hrs.
<Inaccurately implying that inhabitants of an entire continent are of one race> No it doesn't I would reply to the second sentence but it is saying the same thing in a different way. <Misleadingly insinuating that all individuals of the race of the person you initially referenced have hardships that individuals of other races don't, or that there are no ethnic sub-groups within the continent that you initially referenced that endure the same hardships you implied the person you initially referenced has> Once again, this is incorrect. I was trying to lead you to understand what I was saying w/o saying it, but......without going into exhaustive detail let me explain how I see the world and the people in it: With the movement of people all throughout the world (some willing some forced) pretty much every continent (and subcontinent) on the planet has people of multiple races living on it. In the US, this has lead to the creation of social constructs like "African-American". However, when you really take a step back and examine terms like "African-American" or "Black-American" what do they really mean? What are those terms attempting to describe? These terms are attempting to describe the descendants of African slaves who were brought to what is now the US. But what about the internal slave exchange in the Americas? What about "Afro-Jamaicans", "Afro-Trinidadians", "Afro-Brazilians" etc? Are they now "African-Americans" if they reside in the US? What about the child of an "African-American" and a "Afro-Trinidadian/Grenadian"? How do you describe that child within these social constructs ( That is where I would fall into that social construct if I subscribed to it). See how confusing this can get? This is part of the reason why I refer to people's ethnicity by their continent of origin. That's not to say that there are not many diverse people within the continent, ( As Africans, for example, we are the oldest and most diverse group of people on this planet.) but it makes more sense to refer to somebody's ethnicity by their continent of origin than it does by the land mass they happen to reside on. If that is confusing to you, then consider this. Let's say I have a cat and that cat is pregnant. If I place that cat in a broken oven and she has her children, are they kittens or biscuits? Of course, they are still kittens! Now why are they still kittens? They are kittens because their mother (and father) are cats....just like the grandparents are cats....so on and so forth. The point is, where you happen to "pop out of your mother" is really of little consequence when it comes to who you TRULY are. Granted there are some cultural differences around the world.....but when you get right down to it, an African/Black mother will give birth to Africans regardless of where she is.
Treadmills are rather boring and I've heard they aren't the greatest on your joints (not sure how true that is) The outdoors seems to be better.
lol ok buddy, you're just an idiot. See, two people can play at your game. No where did he mention race or AA in his post. You just assumed he did, like I said. I don't see a difference of what he said couldn't apply to hispanics or Asians (heavy amount of Asian gangs when I was growing up since it was a lot of new Asians that came over here in the late 80's).
