The 64 yr old didn't have to get physical to make an effort to protect the kid. Get out of your chair, let the kids know what they're planning on doing isn't going to happen on your bus. I don't blame this old man at all, all it takes is one shove from one of those kids and he falls over and shatters his hip and lives disabled for the rest of his life. Sad story none the less.
When was the last time a bus driver was an authority figure? All they do is drive your kids to school and that's about it. Bus Drivers aren't really that intimidating to a kid. You want to minimize this from happening again, you either make the bus smaller or have the parents take them to school or join a gang and start scrapping with these punks and start a gang war.

The kicks and stomps are when it probably gets scary and close to risking loss of life; but this stuff happens every day at any large, economically diverse school and has for decades. It's a school fight and I wish the tape hadn't gone viral, because the public as a whole shouldn't be intervening on school issues dealing with minors, or creating a political climate that forces prosecutors or administrators to punish more severely than usual. I think it's also worth clarifying if the drug dealing accusation was accurate or not. Also intervention should pretty much always be a personal choice. Warning them that you're calling the cops, which implicitly happened since they overhead him, is all anyone should be required to do. Risking personal injury or charges/lawsuits yourself for seriously injuring a minor shouldn't be required of anyone. Maybe time to get some trainee/academy cops riding the buses.
Yeah, your first statement kind of contradicts everything after. Kid could have easily lost his life here or become disabled. Not a usual "boys will be boys" fight at all. Maybe I'm just not as concerned about these thugs being overly-punished.

this isnt school issue... this is thugs assaulting some kid. Also intervention might be your choice, but letting that kid being almost killed(he easily could have died from those TJ stomps) is scumbag level, i dont care who you are old lady or whatever do something.
I agree. In a situation where it "probably gets scary and close to risking loss of life" our priority should be making sure that no pressure is brought to punish these kids too harshly. Boys will be boys and all!
