The problem with his post is it has a lot of misinformation and isn't really based on reality. Fact 1: Alexander hates paying lux tax, but is willing to pay significant $$$ to make the team better (that isn't lux tax). These include -paying Scola 9M as amnesty -paying 9M combined for picks -paying for big time coaches like Mchale, JVG, RA -investing in computer sofware and other $ball tech Fact 2: Other teams won't absorb 15M in salary without any payment. If we trade Asik, one of two things happen -Asik's trade value gets diminished due to the out-of-pocket 7M the other team has to pay, so maybe he gets you a 1st rounder instead of a lottery -Alexander has to give money out to cover part or all of the out-of-pocket cost of Asik's salary resulting in less financial benefit Fact 3: Young isn't that good. I have no idea what rogower's unhealthy fascination with young is, if I was willing to trade Asik, DMo+other assets for a PF it will be for a franchise/max guy like LMA, Bosh or Love, not ******* freakin' Young. I'm not even sure that dude is better than Tjones, let alone DMo, the dude's undersized at 6'8, played on a horrible team in the east with as much PT as he could handle and only averaged 15 and 7. Maybe Asik gets traded, but it certainly won't be for Thadeus freakin' Young.
question then, with allready earnt $81,541,012 in just salary earnings (this is excluding endorsement or any other busniess investments) would he be willing to come to a contender (not just the rockets) to take a vet min or even oart of the bi annual or MLE exception taking a cut but playing for a championship? btw i hate the move for harrington, i would much rather our 15th man to be covington and play him in the vipers IMO
On a lighter note i came across this bio for harrington on http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/h/harrial01.html What i found hilarious is that the site has a formula for % chance being inducted into the HOF some note worthy people were Harrington: .001 Camby: .001 Dwight: 0.807 Lebron: 0.999 Mchale: 0.874 ( i realise he is in but its funny that he only had a 87.4% shot according to them) Basically you cant look up 90% of the rockets squad because their so inexperienced they dont qualify for this amazing formula
Harrington has zero incentive to negotiate anything more than the veteran's minimum as he is getting paid his rather large 2013-14 salary, regardless. So he will just sign for the minimum with whoever, presumably a playoff-bound team that can offer him a rotation spot. Not sure who that team ends up being. I seriously doubt that it's Houston.
To be more specific: Harrington was owed around $7.1 mil this season, all of it guaranteed. Nobody is dumb enough to claim him after he was waived, because then they'd be on the hook for his entire $7.1 mil salary. Whoever signs him will sign him for the minimum, and Orlando would then owe him the difference. So if the minimum salary is $1.3 mil, for example, Orlando pays him $5.8 mil. $7.1 mil - $1.3 mil = $5.8 mil. This is why he'll for sure play for whatever the minimum is for a player with his service time. He has zero financial incentive to negotiate for something more.
Can you provide a link? I don't think you're right but if you are, I'd like to know. My understanding is that the cap number is x but that the salary is y. Houston can trade Asik for a trade package approximating x, but that whoever acquires him would be paying y (his salary). I could be wrong.
ooooo i thought his contract wasnt fuly guaranteed so he had to go for as much money as possible.. i still stand by cov > harrington
I would pick him up, why wouldn't you besides the fact that we can only keep 15 players when the season starts but we can cross that bridge when we get there.
His 2014-15 salary wasn't fully guaranteed. Not sure how much of it is/was guaranteed. Maybe none of it? If anybody has the specific details, feel free to chime in.
Al Harrington is officially a free agent today! Get a deal done Morey and lets compete for a championship! Harrington fits perfectly on this team at the 4.
You are correct X is a cap figure, but "Y" is a real out-of-pocket cost that teams pay. Paying 15M for Asik is alright for the Rockets as they have been paying 5M for him this year and the next, but it poses a real problem for teams seeking to acquire Asik on year 3. Just because it isn't on the cap doesn't make the extra 7M irrelevant, that only applies to the Rox due to the "discount" on year 1 and 2. In other words, 7M can buy you a lot of stuff outside the cap, it's enough to hire a high profile coach for 2-3 years, or it's enough to buy a couple of 2nd rounders. If you were then acquiring Asik, wouldn't you want compensation for that extra $$$ you're shilling out? That comes in either Alexander covering the payment himself, or acquiring Asik for less value than he's worth. There's no need for a link, just put yourself on a rival team's shoes and you'll see what I mean.
agree. I just want to reiterate that I really really want harrington. If you are reading this morey (which I know you are not) PLEASE git er done.
So there's no rule in the CBA to provide financial compensation. I didn't think there was. Therefore, Houston most likely will not do so.
Yes there's no rule there but again if you're a rival GM why would you take Asik's 15M real salary without any sort of compensation? You make a lot of assumptions that have no factual basis such as: 1. Thaddeus Young is the championship piece we need Dude's undersized at 6'7, averaged a pedestrian 15 pts and 7 rebs, and has no 3 pt game to speak off. He's decent, but so are a lot of other PFs at this stage, and in fact some of the PFs we do have fit the team better. In terms of pure b-ball perspective, having a Howard insurance like Asik and a PF like DMo is worth more than losing both of them for Young. If Young was any good then Philly would have traded him by now, 6'8 PFs are a dime a dozen in the NBA and they want to tank to get the highest pick possible. And if oth Young wasn't merely good but a franchise piece why will Philly trade him when they can pair him up with Noel next year? 2. Houston's a penny pinching tightwad unwilling to pay for Asik's 15M salary after they just paid 5M for him Alexander was on record saying he has enough money but not enough championships. While that may be just a smokescreen, I find it hard to believe he'll dump Asik like a hot potato after saying something like that. 3. Rival GMs will take Asik and his 15M salary for free Sure there's no rule for it, but there doesn't have to be, other Gms aren't dumb and 7M is a lot of money, they're gonna ask for something in return, which will lower Asik's trade value.
