Guys, Al Harrington has been one of the league's most inefficient players for years. No well-managed team wastes a roster spot on this guy. 0% chance that Houston will bother.
Undrafted FA from a weak draft and a 10+ year, career double digit scorer. More or less the same player. You're right. Why bother?
Not another PF! Please! Some of you who think we can use another PF! Well you must be out of your mind!
False. Look at his stats before you judge him: http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/h/harrial01.html TS% in 50's range when playing for NYC and Denver, TS% in the low 40's when playing for ORL and GSW. This tells you that he performs whenever he's on a competitive team. I understand we already have a ton of rooks and unproven PFs in the squad, but honestly rep is almost as important in the game as actual skill. Tmac wasn't very efficient even when wide open, but because he has a "superstar" rep teams still kept double teaming him, leading to wide open shots for the rest of the team. Same thing, Bargnani is just below average as a defender, but because he had the "no D" rep people kept throwing shots in his face, causing them to miss and actually making him a decent defender at the end of the day. In this case, having a proven vet like Harrington will make other players respect him more, drawing their PF away from the paint and away from DH. OTH, somebody like DMo will have to prove themselves first before opponents respect him, and if say he misses his first few open shots then they might leave him alone entirely and just double team howard.
I don't think that Harrington is a fit for the Rockets. The team needs above all shooters. Harden and Howard are the inside weapons and the rest just needs to keep them happy there. They have to be ready to shoot the 3-pointer whenever available and on top of that, they have to run the floor fast. Harrington had the 3pt shot in the past, but coming into his 16th season after one year of injury is probably too late for the Rocket style.
Can't hurt to sign him for the Vet min and have him try to outshine Dmo and TJones at training camp. Personally I hope either Dmo or TJones shine this upcoming season.
Al Harrington would be perfect at the 4 for us this season! Throw the MMLE at him with a team option for next year. Get it done Morey and lets compete for a title!
4 yrs ago? He averaged 14 and 6 just two yrs ago in only 27 mins per game off the bench. That is much better than what any of our current 4s can do. Last year he had injury issues, but if healthy this would be a great signing and really improve our team.
"I want to win, so I'll put it like this: I want to go to a situation where I can compete to make the playoffs," he said. "I'm too old to play for nothing. When I was younger, of course you play for stats and you want to be good, but I'm not going to be a Hall of Famer or nothing like that, so I want to win. I just want to win." http://www.usatoday.com/story/sport...future-knee-staph-infection-contract/2596797/ I'd love to get him for the veterans minimum. Not the best post defender but would be great next to Howard in the stretch 4. He can knock down shots and his perimeter D isn't horrible.
Why did he play only 10 games for Orlando last season? Harrington, the last two years, had his worst 3 point percentages since 2004-05. Maybe he ups his game playing for a contender. Maybe he doesn't. I don't know that I'd want to take the chance and see.
he was unable to contribute at the start, as a routine surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his right knee went wrong in April 2012 when he suffered from a staph infection that served as a serious setback. One season after he'd been one of the best sixth men in the game for the Nuggets, he played in just 10 games for the Magic last season - link decent 'chance' for vet's min.
A minor off the court incident will not be a "big problem" for the Rockets. Harrington would be a nice player to have at the end of the bench.
My honest opinion: Al Harrington would fit like a GLOVE. He brings some serious intensity. He can hit the 3 about as good as any 4 in the league. and he has some good experience. Which in my eyes, is the deciding factor. I am all up for giving T-Jones and D-mo a shot. But odds are is that one of those guys is going to fall flat on their face (like D-mo did last year for the most part) and then what will we be doing? Scrambling for a veteran to work into our system/lineup? I know Covington has talent, blah blah blah. But you guys need to realize that this isn't like years past. We are going for an NBA championship. We don't need to wait and see on rookies. it'll hurt us.... So, to sum this up...Al HArrington would be a very nice fit for us at PF. Heck even starting and playing 25 minutes a night. Why can I say this? BECAUSE HES DONE IT. AND HE HAS SUCCEDED. At this point in his career I'd say with 25 minutes a night he could avg 12-13 a game with 5-6 boards and bring some fire and leadership. Hes a mini Ryan Anderson. and if we can get him at the vet minimum...YOU JUMP ALL OVER IT
