I can't wait for the season to start so we can have something other to talk about than Schaub arguments, and then argue about Schaub anyway.
You really think it will stop then? Granted, they will be other things to talk about but the cliche QB argument will always be tops on the list
The irrational Schaub hate critiques on here are hilarious. The whole "Pro Bowl" argument is pathetic as well. You have only 2 legitimate offensive linemen that are pro bowlers. Brown and Myers are in the tops of their prospective positions. Wade Smith however is rather mediocre and is over hyped because of the guys he is sandwiched between. He doesn't have to be that good for the other two guys around him to take up his slack. Expect this season to be his last, and if the Texans OLine coach would stop screwing off and put David Quessenberry at LG, Smith wouldn't make the opening day roster. There's a reason he's only making 3mil a year. I give you Foster, but his status as a perennial top 5 RB is a tad exaggerated. The dude is great, but he does have some flaws. He's so highly regarded due to his heavy usage in the red zone. He gets more red zone touches than every other RB in the league and that is due to Kubiak's fear of red zone interceptions. His overally yards from scrimmage is high, but a lot of that has to due with bubble screens and dump routes thrown to him. His yards after contact is pretty average for a RB. His "elite" skillset is his vision and patience. Both of which are tops in the league and help make up for other deficiencies in his game. AJ is AJ. OD is pretty good, but he's on the steady decline for the past few years. His yards after the catch is declining every year we go further, and he's getting slower. Both translate into him getting less and less yardage and open looks between the hashtags like he once was capable of. I see Graham possibly being our 1TE after this season. Schaub is a good QB. He has limitations and is also limited by Kubiak's schemes. He's good in this offense but a more athletic qb (a la RG3) would be more suited for what we do. He doesn't have a deep ball anymore and he has issues hitting receivers in stride. What he does well is not turning the ball over. He knows this system inside out and is successful because he knows every nuance of the scheme. He knows exactly what everyone should be doing to a T, so that enhances his abilities to successfully run the offense. One of our issues is having offensive plays nearly set in stone (except for protective packages), so when defenses come out with a scheme that works well against us we do nothing. We have little to know adjustment of plays once at the line, and in this league that spells huge issues with getting stopped quite frequently. Schaub is a damn smart QB and I'm fully supportive of allowing him to change plays to expose defenses than having the offense get exposed by well called defensive schemes. He has to have a productive RB and good OLine for him to be successful. We have those (I think the Oline will be much more improved this season over last) but it's on his shoulders not to fold under the pressure of guiding the offense to the abilities it needs to achieve in order for the Texans to get a 'chip. And you might have caught that interview where Schaub and Myers spoke about how they call audibles all the time. They're only calling protective schemes, not play changes. You can nearly predict every offense snap of the game some times and it's pretty pathetic. That's on Kubiak. My girlfriend who has no knowledge of the game shouldn't be able to guess every play in successive order. Kubiak needs to get over himself and give the offense some ability to dictate play calls. No one is saying defensive match-ups better than the guys on the field. Allowing Schaub to change some things to expose opponents will only make this offense more explosive. Oh, And Kubiak needs to ****ing throw on 3rd and long. His gimme 3rd downs are detrimental in gaining leads and allowing the defense to stay on the field longer than they should. He's good enough, but he isn't putting you over the top. The Texans as a whole need to push for the post season. The defense needs to step the hell up in important games an not give the patriots of the world 40+ a game. Schaub won't put those numbers on a scoreboard, so the defense without a doubt can't allow those numbers to be put on them. This team is no longer an offensive first team. The ability of this team to win at the higher level is 100% predicated on the defense to be an extremely elite unit. That reason alone is why I've been personally displeased with our previous 2 drafts and the development of our young guys.
So wait. Pro Bowl berths are to be taken seriously, except when it involves Schaub, in which case it's a farce? Wade Smith isn't very good anymore. Linemen get berths based on reputation from years past, not a thorough dissection of what actually happened that year. But if you want to argue that he's a good player simply because he was given a Pro Bowl spot, then the same holds true for Schaub. Can't have it both ways.
