probably wind/ac unit. Clapping sounds like auditory hallucination my friend. This happens because the mind can be hacked by your emotions/lack of sleep/lack of whatever you're addicted to like caffeine/brain tumor/over active imagination/etc.

Its all good OP, that type of stuff usually follows "median's" or what ever there called around so it doesn't matter where you live, maybe you should just tell your friend to leave first, bring some other friend over for a couple of nights and see what happens.
