Dude, my bad. I totally came off as being douchey which was not my intention, after re-reading my post. I wrote an entire paper in middle school on Pac in Jr. High cause he was my number 1 idol, so I did a lot of research on his background, life, and of course death. THUGG LYYYYFFFE!
Pac hands down. Not debatable. Not because he's the better rapper, but he was the better artist. Never understood the love fest for Jay-Z. He was blessed with having an ear for beats, and attaching a good sounding flow. He's deemed great because of his entrepreneurship, but so what. Same as T.I. All the while DMX and Scarface could be considered better rappers. Jigg never touched a conscious or political topic in a major way. Pac, for all his flaws, touched on almost every topic; good and bad. I'm a huge Nas and Scarface fan, and still love Pac for what he did. His problem was, despite having a strong mic presence, he barley tried to be a lyricists, even though he could have been. But despite that, he was uniquely one of a kind. He teetered between being great, and crazy. Jay-Z was a punchline rapper, and a very good one. Those who compare him to Big and Nas understand that. Nas's brother Jungle, was the hood. I think remember Jungle was ready to put one in Jigg.
Some of you that think you know rap music and it's history, truly don't. Please research. It's crazy how one can try to interpret something they have no knowledge on, and furthermore, don't fully understand it. It's like explaining the color yellow to a man born blind. To say Jay-Z was a punchline rapper, or to say that 2Pac wasn't materialistic is just plain false. Some of you get caught up in the fascade. Who am I to say that "Can I Live" isn't better than "So Many Tears"? Or that "Dear Mama" isn't better than "Allure"? Is "2 Of Amerikaz Most Wanted" better than "Regrets"? It's preference. I'm sure there's people that think "How Do U Want It" is a better song than "D'Evils". Do I agree? No. And that's fine. But to blatantly hate on a artist because you don't "get them" is just premature. Some of you watch too much Fox, CNN, etc. and let their views and ways become yours. I know people that can relate to both Jay and Pac. At the end of the day, it's all opinion. I think people post with an agenda to become/stay relevant on this board. We should just post what we think are great songs from BOTH these rappers and let people that don't know hear and appreciate the art. The beauty of it is we can all agree to disagree, I guess.
Jay-Z is a punchline rapper. Its like the biggest thorn Jay-Z stans can't take or hear. What separates him from most any other rapper, is his ear for beats, and pretty much matching his flow to it. He is a master of that. I dont know what qualifies anyone as a hip hop/rap historian. But this music is all I grew up on. And Im not from some suburb either. I like Jay-Z, I just think he's overrated. People put him on some pedestal, and that sounds awful familiar when relating to some other rappers. You can't be the greatest, if the diss record that took aim at you, then in turn became a verb.
I think Ether was viewed as a clear winner because it was so simplistic in "dissing" Jay. Almost elementary really. Takeover really went over many people's heads. But hey if the media says Nas won then so be it.
maybe i'm just old, but there's nothing like golden age of rap where you have nas, tupac, snoop, tribe called quest, outkast, ghetto boys , wu tang and the list now goes on and on back in the day, there was so much good stuff. is jay z getting top bill cause the game is weak now? -oh the game (the rapper) that guy is overrated

I don't think the industry is weaker but it's just difficult to remain relevant for 20 plus years. Jay was on the come up when Biggie and PAC were in their prime. Many people saw he was really talented but I feel because of the presence of the former 2, RD was overlooked. It's just amazing that after 20 years people still look forward to Jay's next album. I don't think you can say the same about Snoop, Nas, or anyone else.
The media? Hot 97 asked listeners who won, and it was the fans who crowned Nas. And if Ether was so weak, then why did Jay-Z resort to a low Supa Ugly? It stung jay to hear people call him a Stan. A product of Dame, way more than attempting to damage Nas and spouting gossip in Takeover. That's all it was. That's what made Ether great. It stung Jigg at the time. To hear that he was in fact inferior to Nas or Em. The media didn't do anything. It was jay-Z's insecurity exposed that made Ether so great. The Take Over was a sucker punch. Ether was a spanking. Supa Ugly was a desperate last ditch, that even jay-Z's mother shamed him on. Its history now. But Jay-Z fans sure like to dismiss the entire thing.
