I have comcast and was thinking of upgrading to the x1 dvr, but not sure if it will just cause me more headache. Does anybody have it that can give their thoughts on it?

I just recently got it. Its worked well so far, haven't had many issues. Had to restart it once due to some error but other than that I haven't had an issue. The interface is really nice especially compared to other Comcast receivers. I'd recommend it especially if you're looking for a whole home like DVR similar to the DirecTV Genie or Dish Hopper.

I have 'free' tv from Comcast for 6 months + 'free' HBO for 24 months and was considering getting a TV tuner card with cablecard slot so I can set up my own DVR. Something to think about for those of you who are more technically inclined.

No. They have a DVR fee but that applies to any DVR receiver. They also sent someone out for a "professional" install which had a fee of $35 but they ended up waiving that for me. Other than that, there wasn't any other charge related to the X1.

I got it yesterday, I'm posting my "as bad as you would expect from Comcast" service issues on the Comcast thread in the GARM, though it seems the X1 system is actually pretty good. It didn't turn off last night with the remote.

My main issue is that now I need to go buy a programmable remote to run my AVR, the X1 remote only programs for the TV.

I'm also getting 76.5 down and 11 up on the internet service since this upgrade.

Turns out the X2 remote will control the AVR. It does not say so in the paperwork, the tech didn't know it, the on-line chat people didn't know it, but there is information about it deep in the tech forums.

Also there is a "favorites" process that will only show the channels you want in the guide, so I am warming up to this thing.

Also, apparently the cable box is supposed to be powered on at all times. The remote does not turn it off, so I have been turning it off at the box. But, when I power it back up, it goes back to the defaults of only stereo sound and a 720 picture. (also the Closed caption prference goes back to the default)

Still on the fence about upgrading till they work out the kinks. I am intrigued at the faster internet service though.

Comcast, despite all their issues, definitely has the best broadband in this area.

My X1 box will not get 5:1 sound, anyone else?

The X1 service phone lady checked her box, er x1 box, and found out her's wouldn't either. You can select surround in the preferences but you still don't get it, and, it defaults back to stereo as soon as you close the dialog.

A Tier 2 service person is supposed to call but it looks like a major programming deficiency.

Again, other than working through these glitches, the actual interface is pretty dang good.

Sad isn't it? We have really bad broadband options in this city.

Why do they need a professional to install it? Is it any different than a normal cable/dvr box?

We got X1 about a month ago. I like the new interface and the fact that you can record more shows and I like the new on demand setup. We have had some problems with boxes upstairs but I would attribute that more to the strength of signal up there than anything else. Overall, I'm pretty happy with it

I've been using X1 for a month, and I like it. The interface is a big leap forward. Feels like my TV viewing experience has been upgraded to the level of "2011 DirecTV/Dish," which is a big step up from the "1998 generic cable" viewing experience I've been suffering through for years. Hopefully, the X2 software update will finally propel me into the year 2013...

I honestly have no idea. When I watched the guy come and install it, it was something I could've easily done. And to think they might have charged $35 for that, lol. Guess it was just a way for them to potentially make money, but the guy honestly came out for no reason.

How close is the X1 to the upcoming X2?

They previewed it in June and it looks pretty cool.

My understanding is that X2 is a software update for the current X1 boxes. There's a chance it will be available by the end of the year. Knowing Comcast, though, it'll probably start rolling out to select markets in 2017.

In my opinion X1 is a joke of a product. The box is nowhere near ready to be mass marketed. Yes, the interface is great but for me and apparently a lot of people in the X1 support form:

    1. it won't turn off by the remote

    2. every time you turn it off by the button it, you lose all your preferences and defaults back to 720P

    3. it does not provide a surround sound signal, it will not hold the surround sound selection

    4. a lot of people are having problems with losing scheduled recordings (not me yet)

    5. the installers, on-line chat and phone support people don't know much about it ( I had to tell the X1 phone support that the X@ remote would program for AVR)

how does this compare to the U-Verse box? It was a big upgrade for me 2 years ago compared to the dvr box i had from comcast.
