it's like watching the Palm story all over again. Of course someone will buy them for billions..then dissolve it. Hell Microsoft should buy it and dissolve it..forcing business users to switch to something else. Of course they would hope it's windows phones.
bump-stickity bump-stickity bump bump. yes. i plan in purchasing today if it goes online. tired of spec wars and may finally settle on a phone to keep for a year. within the nine months i've had the droid dna, black nexus 4, white nexus 4, and now the galaxy s4. so yeah... if they optimize the eff out of this phone, it'll be my last phone for a long while.
have had the iphone since 09' (3GS and 4)...this might push me over to Android. Initially wanted the Nexus 4 but no LTE, all glass and battery life kept me away. S4 is too big. HTC's camera ..blah. My 2nd OS choice is actually windows phone 8 but there's little things that are still missing in that OS that doesn't me want to fully commit. e.g. media volume controls are not separate from phone ringer. wtf.
nexus 4 has a lte radio in it and could be enabled if you're comfortable with rooting (should be if you purchase one). s4 really isn't all that big. bezel is minimal (actually bezel is too small for a phone with hardware buttons). its thinness also makes the phone feel small in hand/pocket (i am using it w/o a case though). just figured that since i'm never satisfied with specs, i just need to say eff it and focus on the experience. scionxa could probably give you more info on windows phone.
This is an extreme annoyance for me too. Unfortunately there doesn't appear to be any third party apps that can fix this. As far as WP8 goes, it's an impressive OS IMO. I know a lot of people hate it and talk crap about it (Myself included prior to getting one), but the OS is beyond smooth. I have TERRIBLE specs on my $99 (off contract) Nokia Lumia 520. Yet it runs on par with the GS4 I returned last month. I also think the keyboard is significantly better than the stock Android keyboard (not as good as swiftkey). As far as apps, yeah it' missing a lot of stuff you may be used to but I have all the things I need. Twitter, Instagram (I use Instance, and looking forward to 6Gram. There is no official IG app), Foursquare, WhatsApp. If you work at a company that uses Microsoft Exchange, the calendar app and e-mail synching is probably the best I've used. On Android, HTC handled Exchange really good as well. I won't lie, I do miss Android at times and it will always be my preferred OS. But damn do I love me some Lumia's now. I personally wouldn't recommend another manufactures WP8 device. Nokia adds a ton of functionality and it's almost like they're the only ones who give a ****. I'm actually considering getting a 1020 but that camera hump looks ugly
You are right...it runs very smooth. I thought about picking up the 520 myself for ATT (less than 100 bucks off contract) but I am waiting for Moto's announcement. I use dropbox and there's no official app. I also use a lot of google services like gmail, google drive, calendar, maps etc and I am not a fan of the animosity between google and microsoft. -Lack of notification center -Ringer volume mess -Lacking some major official apps. Not a fan of third party alternatives. -I HATE how the top status bar keeps disappearing! Wtf! -Top devices keep going to ATT. I know the 928 is on verizon but all these devices feel like it's not the best it can be. The vibration on 928 sounds like a lawn mover inside my friends phone. I still think one day I will switch to WP8..but unfortunately it's not on the same level with some basic features yet in comparison to android and iOS.
Yeah, lack of dropbox can be a killer for some. I especially liked how it would sync all my photos I've taken when I was on Android. I actually like how the top status bar disappears, I don't need to constantly know how much signal I have. Time doesn't disappear which is good though. Well if you were to just try it, go for the $100 device. Use it for the times you go out to the bar and get hammered so you don't have to worry about potentially losing or abusing your high-end device I think the eco-system will get better, but just like you, I might end up getting the Moto X if they announce some sort of software optimizations. I'm tired of Android phones running slightly laggy at times and manufacturers just throwing quadcore chips on them.
Soon you will be sucked in. You'll get a 1020. You will be one of us! One of us! Haha. I'm glad you're trying this thing out. I love my 1020. The photos I've been taking are just obnoxiously good. Nokia in general knows their optics.
Here's all the details on the Moto X. http://www.theverge.com/2013/8/1/4578890/this-is-the-moto-x <script height="574px" width="1020px" src="http://player.ooyala.com/iframe.js#pbid=dcc84e41db014454b08662a766057e2b&ec=xiaGdyZDrPeN5WIywf-AcGTCSK9f4TmI"></script>
Well the Moto X was disappointing. The hype train definitely just de-railed. Yeah, I might be one of you guys soon. Technobuffalo has an article where they go to DisneyLand and take pics. It's bad ass. Also, I'm really liking Here Maps, and Here Drive+. I love how I can actually download a map and have completely off-line navigation. There's a picture floating around on /r/windowsphone of a guy turning it on during a flight. Do you have a case on yours? Does that pureview hump on the back bother you or make it really awkward to hold?
I hardly notice a hump that much. It's actually kinda nice when the phone lays on a table and it's on a slight incline because of the hump. I didn't get a case for the phone, although I might try out that extended battery case thing. The phone is somehow lighter than the 920, but it feels equally as rugged.
Time to jump on Nexus 5 hype train I guess... Tried to jump on the Ubuntu Edge train, but that won't even be leaving the station it seems.
Back on the windows phone hype train till the iPhone 5S comes out. Damn I want a bigger screen so bad. Forget you motorola. Almost had me.
I dont mind the Moto X...I just dont like it enough to make the switch. I have the S3 now and Im still happy with it, but might want to switch to the Note 3 when that comes out...or hold out for the S5.
Seems like the Moto X reveal was a total dud. It's hard to believe Google would blow it so badly. This video is interesting (and maybe scary). <iframe width="560" height="315" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/xXyCbrdQEyA" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
