Really? So where exactly does the loud, obnoxious American tourist stereotype come from? Also, have you looked at global awareness and knowledge studies lately; the US citizenry is almost always behind most other developed countries and even some developing ones.

I'm also not just talking about China; I'm talking in general.

I was going to say what is there to debate about this but apparently some of y'all have found a way to make this a controversial topic about a woman that is obviously mentally ill.

You sound like an arrogant tourist but I didn't know you were a 2 percenter. That surely changes everything. Can you read?

From faking marriage certificates to get honeymoon discounts in the Maldives to letting children defecate on the floor of a Taiwan airport, Chinese tourists have recently found themselves at the center of controversy and anger.

Thanks to microblogging sites in China, accounts of tourists behaving badly spread like wildfire across the country, provoking disgust, ire and soul-searching.

Are they all mentally ill? Maybe we need a test of mental competency before we give out visas.

I'm talking about China. Apparently the Chinese government finds it to be a problem also since their Vice Premeir Wang Yang is clearly stating that everybody have fun tonight doesn't mean ruining other countries treasures.

I feel pretty confident in saying that she is mentally ill. I don't know whether your question is facetious but to answer directly. There have been times when health tests were required for a visa. To test for mental illness though isn't that simple and I tourist visas are seen as an economic benefit to our country. The amount of aggravation and loss of tourist revenue that might come from screening for mentally ill probably isn't worth it.

No, just saying we already have our fair share of crazies. Mental health screening should be necessary but then again we let crazies buy guns at Academy so oh well.

Sometimes yes, sometimes no. I've definitely had my head-in-my-hands, I'm-not-with-this-guy tourist moments abroad. And then there are the well-behaved, when-in-Rome Americans.

Yeah, true nuff. I don't know if the Paint Lady will get 10 years, though. Depends on how much screaming and threatening and "she was framed!" we hear from China. Not that we should placate them.

I do hope our justice system is stern with her. It's not like you're gonna see an American throwing green paint on the terra cotta warriors in Xian.

Way to resort to personal attacks. You simply called my comment dumb with no further explanation and told me to educate myself when, factually speaking, I likely am more educated than most people.

I was simply refuting your attempt to make this type of behavior seem commonplace and a trait inherent to Chinese people. So what exactly are you trying to prove? That some Chinese tourists behave poorly? I could cite as many examples of poor behavior from Americans in foreign countries; that doesn't make it a "trend."

Just to make it clear, both Mainland Chinese and American tourists are notorious for being the worst tourists for some of the same reasons but within different contexts.

At least American tourists don't **** on the street or let their daughter piss in the subway.

As somebody from Hong Kong/Taiwan, man **** the mainland tourists.

I said this defacement seems to be all the rage for Chinese tourists which of course is backed up by the article I quoted. Nowhere did I say it was commonplace nor a trait inherent to the Chinese. That's your own, for whatever reason, projection of my comments. Perhaps with all your extensive education you're ignorant of the idiom all the rage. You are perhaps Chinese yourself and in that case, as we have witnessed since Yao on this board, a bitter, nationalistic response is not really that uncommon when China or the Chinese receive some sort of criticism. If you want to bash American tourists, be my guest. When one takes a sledgehammer to a Chinese national monument then I'll be the first to condemn it without some childish need to defend the USA.

Furthermore, calling your comment dumb isn't a personal attack. You responded in an arrogant condescending tone and i returned the favor which maybe I shouldn't have bothered. I think you've overreacted.

    way to analyze it, man.
This are all generalizations. Of course because the large number of population there will be a large number of uneducated tourists, but you actually put them in the same context as those well behaving, good tourists of that same country.

Why don't you just chill out because it's happening. Focus on the potential positives on tourism in the near future written in the previous article you posted. I agree with that tourism professor right there.

You take the bad to make some more and hope for the good.
