Hehe, well, your "not much" doesn't mean much of anything either. I just mean that I like all 3 players and their potential. I assume you meant you don't love the long term potential of that team, so I replied that I do. It's not Jan Vesely or bust. I think Wall and Beal both have strong All Star potential. If they find a good big man with their cap space, and I really like Otto Porter, I guess more than most. He's coming into an offensive system that's foreign for him so he'll likely be a backup and have some serious adjustment pains this year. But long term, I think he's a very good starter, kind of like Batum (in terms of stature, not in terms of playing style).
^I think I accidentally deleted a line there after "big man with their cap space", i probably meant to say that they could be an upper seed.
He had a per36 of 20-8-4 last year and a PER of 21. Harden had a per36 of 19-5-4 with a PER of 21 his last year on OKC. We gave him a max so why shouldn't John Wall get one?
If he pans out, I could see Wall making a couple of All-Star games but I doubt he makes the leap to top 10 player. Beal is a mystery. Maybe he'll show more his 2nd year. The few times I saw him he sure didn't strike me as very dynamic. Porter looked like a pure unadulterated bust in summer league, but that doesn't prove anything. I will be surprised if he's ever as good as Batum. Besides the Dwightmare, how often do teams find good big men in free agency? Wizards are in a tough place.
Because Harden is a much better iso scorer/shooter? Harden was used 10% less than John Wall that year and still scored the same per 36 with less turnovers. Morey correctly predicted that Harden would be able to score in bunches. There is nothing to suggest that John Wall is going to come in next year and start getting to the line that much or knocking down 3 pointers.
Porter went from a Princeton high post facilitator in Georgetown to getting the ball behind the 3pt line in a run and gun summer league system and had 2 bad games. In my view, it's really as meaningless as it gets. I think he will need quite a bit of time, maybe the full year, to learn the role but basketball IQ is one of his strengths so I don't think it's a long term issue. Btw, I don't mean they need a Dwight, I just think they need a nice Gortat/Millsap-ish long term starter (in terms of quality, not style), and they are going to have some 3 years (until their rookies grow up) to find 1.
Are you talking about Porter? It's a completely different role. Download a few Georgetown and summer league games and compare. It's like asking Kirilenko to play Harden's role. Blog media looks at the boxscore and overreacts, and then everyone starts painting the guy as a bust. But realistically, that kind of transition takes much more than a few days. Maybe he will bust, maybe not, he wouldn't be the first. But it's not exactly smart to make any kind of conclusions based on those games.
Hmmmm. He has shown flashes. It's not out the question for him to develop a jump shot at 22. Let's just say I'm glad we're not the team involved.
I think John Wall will surprise a lot of people this year. I watched a couple of games when he came back last year and the stats don't show how much of an impact he had on the court. He makes his team mates sooo much better. He actually makes Vesely look like a decent player. I know it's not a popular opinion but I think he's worth really close to the max.
I just don't understand why teams bid against themselves. Look, I like John Wall and I think he has a chance to make a leap (though people said that before last season too), but why the hell do you dump a super max on him when he's a restricted free agent next year? The Wizards had ALL the leverage in this situation. Let him explore the market and see what's out there, and if he can get the max elsewhere then great, you can give him the money if you feel like it. Piss poor management 101 on display here.
Exactly. The biggest problem for most "small market" teams (and I use that term very loosely here, DC metro area is huge) is that many of them have piss poor management that overrpays all-star or lesser players, often bidding against themselves.
Í´d hate to be a Wizards fan right now, but I dont necessary think this is a big mistake. This is a team, that is going nowhere and will never attract a high profile free agent. Wall can be a good all star player and as that he could deserve the max that he got. It´s a gamble, but at least they have a player, that´s exciting to watch and that might deserve the money he got. And that´s probably better than having no Wall and hoping to get another try at another high pick while developing Beal and Porter Jr. Like I said, it sucks to be a Wizards fan right now, but this is certainly not their worst option... just thinking, that they could´ve landed Harden last season...
Agree with your assessment of the Wizards. IMO, they are going 100 mph toward mediocrity. As a Rockets fan, I can't tell you how glad I am they passed on Harden.

Helllllooooo @John_Wall!!! Well, if Parsons keeps buying people dinner, he's gonna go broke. It's max contract John Wall's turn now!
I'm higher on Wall then some, in my mind at worst he's Terry Porter and I actually think he has a good chance of becoming something like a 6'4" Kevin Johnson... But there was no need to extend him so early.
