I have had several pairs of sennheiser headphones over the years and they were all nice quality. Of course within every brand you have higher quality and lesser models. I switched to a Beyerdynamic with my last purchase after trying a friend's set and have been very happy with it.

Something like the Beyerdynamic DT 770 PRO, 250 ohms is going to be a better headphone and cheaper than say Beats Solo HD On-Ear Headphones

There are lots of good headphones out there though, and if you get great headphones you need to be hooking them to a high quality source to get the benefits. That means you will want a headphone amp if you are going to use it with an ipod for example or you won't be getting the full benefit. Good headphones aren't really for playing sound louder, but for hearing all the details at lower sound levels.

You also have to decide if you want open ear headphones where you can hear other sound around you, or noise canceling.

Beats headphones are better than what comes with an ipod or the $10-$30 headphones most stores sell, but for the money you can get better quality from other brands.

For what it is worth, here is headphone.com's current top 10 list under $500:

Got these as a gift for Christmas. Loving them so far. Good quality mid-range headset that beats the hell out of ear buds.

To add to my post above:

The Sony MDR-V6 has been around for 20 years with an excellent track record. I've even read a review by a studio tech that says he doesn't create his music with these on, but he always listens afterwards to his tracks with this on because they pick up things other headphones don't.

He went on to say, he's had them for 15 years and only recently changed the pads on the ears as they finally wore out and that the replacement pads were available for $5 and easy to change.

For $94 on Amazon, they seem to be an amazing set of headphones for the money. Overall almost all 4 and 5 star ratings by customers including myself.

Also...I found it interesting that this http://www.headphone.com/index.php link is for a company just down the road from me in of all places Bozeman, MT. Cool story bro I know but hey, Montana doesn't get a lot of press so gonna take it while I can.

    p.s. Their review of the MDR-V6: http://www.headphone.com/headphones/sony-mdr-v6.php

Sounds like I'll just have to go over to a place that sells and test them out. Not sure I wanna buy something without testing out the quality firsthand.

Headphones also have to match your electronics. For mobile apps, you want something easy to drive( ie. lower ohms). You also want something that balances out the characteristic of you device.

The best sound headphones I've own were sennheiser HD580 but the needed an external amp. The best mobile headphones were etymotics. These days, I lose and destroy so many headphones when traveling, I just buy whatever cheap ultimate ears I can find.

Resurrecting this thread to ask a quick question for ya'll.

Are the Bang and Olufsen H6 or H3 headphones any good? I'm looking around for new headphones since I sold my Bose for a decent price. Any feedbacks will be appreciated!

that was going to be my question. are quality headphones worthless if you're just going to plug them into a laptop or mp3 player?

Can someone recommend wireless sports headphones with bluetooth? I'm looking for something with decent sound quality. I plan to use them for long distance running and other workouts so they need to be comfortable yet sit snug in my ears...don't want them falling out easily.

I have a pair of Sennheiser HDR 120's on my work computer. Listening to them now. :)

Not really an audiophile set, but extremely comfortable and a nice sound.

Don't know if they come in Bluetooth or wireless but I love my power beats made for athletes. They don't move at all when I workout and sound is awesome.

Jaybird Bluebuds X. You can wear them under or over the ear. Add some Comply foam tips, and they'll be perfect.

I always buy the cheapest headphone I can find to use during work. Problem is, after a few months, the left or right side will stop working. Don't want to shell out the cash for a good pair for work. Is there a cheap, durable headphone out there?

Thanks. I did some googling and these seem like what I need. Just a little high on the price point. I'll have to wait for price to go down on these.
