I think there are several reasons for his popularity. For one thing he accomplished a great deal prior to being President, a war veteran etc... people think well of veterans.

Second, Bush Sr. for the most part avoided controversial statements and issues and was often critical of Reagan and his policies. Therefore he is viewed as a more "moderate" Republican.

Also, the fact that he served one term and was sandwiched between Reagan's scandals and Clinton's scandals helped keep him fairly clean.

I believe he is relatively speaking a clean, decent man and probably the best Republican President since DDE.

Yeah... So, anyone wants to take the pro-leukemia side of the debate?

A little off topic, but damn, that many people to protect an ex president? Does he really need the Secret Service to protect him, 20 years removed from office? I know he gets them for life, but still, it's not necessary.

Regardless of politics, Bush is one of the most decent and respectable men to ever serve as our President. A true class act in every sense of the word.

Just in case anyone thinks this is a publicity stunt, know it is real. George and Barbara lost a daughter to leukemia in 1953 (the child was 3 years old). They know the personal loss, they know what the family is facing.

Say what you want about their family, but they are classy, and they are heartfelt. It is genuine.

It is necessary. Saddam already tried to assassinate him once, and while he's dead his minions live on.

Our ex-Presidents, whether you like them or not, are protected for a reason. As little as I like Clinton I acknowledge that it would be a TERRIBLE day for America if we were to awake one day and turn on the news only to see that he'd been assassinated. They are part of who we are as a nation, part of our shared history. And there are alot of bad people out there who would LOVE to kill them.

It's absolutely necessary. It's almost as important as protecting POTUS, sorta like a cross between protecting POTUS and a historical document like the Declaration.

**** who he was as a president.
This is VERY cool that he, along with numerous secret service agents are doing this for this young kid who is extremely scared what he's going through.

The D&D crowd generally manages to surprise me somehow.. Well, I'm not sure surprise is the correct word.

I have been pleasantly surprised in this thread. Although many of the usual suspects are absent.

Pretty sure 41 refers to the fact that Bush Senior was the 41st president.

Then why do ex presidents from Bush Jr. on get just 10 years of protection? I didn't say he didn't need protection, but not that many guys. If each one is paid, say a low $35K/year and 28 guys, that's $980,000.

In context... Everyone is saying nice things about Bush the elder here, from all sides of the aisle... so you have to post that? I just don't get it. This is really pretty non-political.

Anyway, on topic, I appreciated learning that he and Barbara lost a little daughter to leukemia. I never knew that.

As to the topic of protection, totally agree we have to do this and it's chump change in the federal budget. I'm pretty sure they get more than "10 years" of protection (even the fossil of Jimmy Carter, LOL). How on Earth do they stay sharp though? Yikes. It must be a job at once incredibly boring and tense, especially since someone already tried to get Bush I.

I've always wondered if his years at the CIA make him an extra high-value target actually.

Actually they got rid of lifetime protection until Obama re-signed it into law. I think 10 years should be enough. It isn't like these guys can't just afford their own protection. After being president they always get cush speaking jobs, sitting on boards, or writing books.

Heh, Secret Service make alot more than that.

Their lives will be at risk until the day they die of natural causes. They get the protection because we want them to die of natural causes.

They get the protection because they deserve the protection.
