Also hearing #Braves aren't roaring down the Bud Norris trail. Lacks big-game experience they would look for if they deal for a starter.
— Jayson Stark (@jaysonst) July 26, 2013
Other than leverage, I don't really care if the Braves are interested. All their good prospects are already in the majors, and likely not getting moved. I'm not saying they don't have anybody, but the guys I'd want are 3-4 years away, and not at our most needed positions.
His WHIP and BAA this year are both high. Giving up more than a hit per inning. I wouldn't expect much in return for Bud.
The more I think about it though, if he goes to a National League team those numbers "should" go down. Obviously they don't have to but he can be a solid 3/4/5 man for a playoff team in the NL. One thing I find interesting is that he used to dominate the Cardinals for some reason. That should have some value. Also, he could be useful out of the bullpen in the playoffs if the team that trades for him already has 3 or 4 starters performing better than Bud once the playoffs roll around. Still, it seems like Bud might remain an Astro if the Luhnow doesn't have his way with someone. I like that he is playing hardball. I really believe Luhnow sees this situation as win-win. He will either deal Bud for a haul that he is comfortable with (at least 1 B prospect?) or we will hang on to Bud and keep him as part of the rotation moving forward.
The good thing is Luhnow will either get the guys he wants or we'll keep Bud around..somebody will over pay for him
Good teams need good 4th and 5th starters. It seems like a lot of people only value a guy if he is a true star. Most great teams only have a few star level players, they are great teams because they have good solid talent throughout. I see no reason to move him for a couple of guys who's upside would likely be someone like Bud, we already have that in Bud. I also think he could be dominant at the back end of the bullpen, and we sure could use a couple of those
Yeah, you're wrong. A fourth or fifth starter has a certain value, even to a good team looking for one. As this team is comprised and the strategy that seems to be in place, Bud's real value is in trade value. He might actually have a negative on the field value for us right now. Bud should be gone to the highest bidder that fills a talent need for us because a good fourth starter isn't one.
Arrogant much? I see two opinions here more than "wrong" or "right". And, Beard's opinion resonates much more with me than yours.
Ok, well maybe everyone except you should quit posting here and just read your posts, since they are the only ones that are right? Giving away a 28 year old with a cheap contract and an era in the 3's, would be incredibly stupid. Luckily for us, Luhnow is not stupid
Trading to the highest bidder isn't giving anything away, it's called his current market value. I didn't say my posts are the only ones that are right, I just said yours was wrong. Just about everything you said was wrong. You said good teams value fourth or fifth starters. The Astros aren't a good team so his value to us is really how other teams value him. We can be the worst team in baseball without Bud Norris because we're the worst team in baseball WITH Bud Norris. Then you said you see no value in moving Bud Norris for prospects with upside of Bud because we already have Bud. This is a horrible statement. Would you rather the worst team in baseball have Bud Norris or even two of Bud Norris at 23 on a minimum contract or a 28 year old Bud Norris at $3 million or more next year? That seems to me a pretty obvious choice. Then you say Bud Norris would be dominant back end of the bullpen. Then move him to the bullpen, build his value, and TRADE him ala Brett Myers. A dominant back end of the bullpen pitcher for the worst team in baseball means what? Much like you dont build a football team with a field goal kicker you don't build a baseball team with a relief pitcher.
You are assuming we will be the worst team in baseball for many years ahead, or you are assuming that Bud Norris will soon begin to go down hill. I think we have a chance to really start to improve next year and then to possibly show enough improvement by 2015 to contend. Maybe you are right, maybe I am only time will tell And as for moving Bud to the pen only to build his trade value, thing is I would rather have a dominant pitcher there than to move him to trade him. Again, I don't assume we will continue to be the worst team in baseball like you do, hopefully i'm right One thing I do know for sure is it would be STUPID to trade a 28 year old pitcher with an era under 4 and a cheap contract, if you aren't getting at least one very high level prospect back. Just selling to the highest bidder because they bid the most, even if that is not a great return, well that isn't smart
The only thing worse than saying something stupid in public is doing so with arrogance. But it's cool; you're entitled to both your ignorant opinion and the arrogant expression of it.
god i'm sick of coming to this thread getting my hopes up that the new posts will be actual trade rumors.
