Just curious? The world is over populated. We have destroyed the vast majority of our rain forests and natural resources. We have raped the world and show little willingness to stop. We are the most war like species on the planet. Regardless if you believe we as humans created the green house effect that is melting the polar ice caps and changing the climate for all living creatures, there is no denying the adverse effect that we have had on the planet. Hell, we didn't stop there, we have even managed to pollute the orbit and space around the planet.

So I'm just curious, would anyone support legislation to make getting pregnant illegal with out a license. Make individuals and couples go through a screening prior to recieving a license and limit the number of children per household and community.

I'm guessing most people would not be in favor of this. How about making abortion ilagal if we could pass a law like this? Would any pro lifers get on board? I doubt it. But I'm just throwing it out there knowing full well that nothing like this will ever happen in my lifetime.

At some point in time, when the worlds resources are about at there end, and the planet resembles a lump of coal as much as it does the big blue planet as currently seen from outer space, we are likely to take drastic actions. Of course it would be too late by then.

And yes I am going on the belief that we have technology to prevent couples or individuals from getting pregnant.
So there it is.... Yes or No

No. What we need is mandatory sex education for youngsters (age-appropriate, of course) and increased access to contraceptives. That's probably the best form of population control.

I voted yes, though I don't know how it would be implemented.

I didn't vote yes because of population control which is also a problem. But I voted yes because of how many horrible parents there are out there. People need a license to drive a car, but anyone can raise a child.

Yeah, it would be horribly controversial if it was ever brought before congress as a bill but the number irresponsible pregnancies in this country and the world is just inexcusable IMO. Having said that I don't blame anyone who disagrees with the suggestion of making it a law to become pregnant.

I'm open to discussing anything, but this would be *impossible* to administer.

When Jethro gets Jolene preggers on a whoopsie Friday night, what then? A federal fine they can't pay? Jethro Jr. becomes a ward of the state? Mandatory abortion? (None of these things makes any sense whatsoever.)

Sterilizing people who don't meet minimal qualifications however...

China tried to do population control. Now single men there have a hard time finding p***y. You want that to happen here?

what is the basis for this claim?

The most valuable resource on the planet is a human being. Nothing else can use resources to create something of greater value (a beaver maybe).

We need more people, not less.

Wow, that is pretty amazing. How many do you think the Earth can support?

You do realize a large % of the Earth's population does not even have sanity drinking water or decent access to daily food, right?

That's because China's economy, tradition and tons of other crap reasons that indoctrinate people into thinking they need sons.

Surely, we won't abort our baby girls here in America since we're confident of our own pension savings and our daughters' abilities to find a desk job?

Hell yes I would. One would need at the minimum a high school diploma, be 21, and should be able to show that they can support a child on their own and not rely on the state.

I work with too many teenagers who have multiple kids, no future, jumping from job to job and ultimately relying on tax dollars to bail them out.

Really? Hunger, poverty and climate issues are a very real issue. The earths resources are finite and not infinite. I really don't think any of the issues are debatable regardless of the reason. But, if you think the world needs more people, then I guess you have a right to that opinion.

    1. We're not really running out of natural resources. For example, food production technology has far surpassed population growth and there is more than enough food being produced to feed the world many times over. It's just not efficiently allocated and wasted in large part.

    2. Thanks in part to an economic boom in Africa and much of the developing world, many population models now show population growth slowing and peaking in the next few decades and then beginning a slight decline.

Conversely, how do you guys feel about technology that allows people to live longer?

Old people are by far the most taxing on our healthcare system.

What if we proposed legislation to end life at 70? Maybe 75? If we are going to legislate life then let's at least get rid of the least productive segment of society.

I don't buy it. There is no question we are using up our natural resources. Look at any model of the rain forests. Look at the ice caps and the effects it is having on climate.

And population is not on the decline and never has been throughout the history of man. Yes there are small periods where war and disease cut a piece out of our population but as a whole it has continued to grow exponentially. In year 1 the population was estimated at 200 million. In year 1000 the population was estimated at 275 million. That's an increase in 75 million over a 1000 year period.

Jump forward to the year 2006 and our population is 6.5 billion. Our population in the year 2011 was 7 billion! That is a 500 million increase in just 5 years. Remember from year 1 to year 1000 we had a 75 million increase over the course of 1000 years. Now we are having 500 million increase in just 5 years!

Say what you want but we are genetically predispositioned to procreate regardless of economics or environmental issues. We can't help ourselves. People are not going to stop having babies on their on. On a large scale many parents will continue to double their count having 3, 4, 5 children or more. I come from one of those families myself.

Modest estimations have the worlds population at 10.8 billion people in the year 2100. That's a 4 billion increase in population! Does that represent a slow down in growth from the beginning of the millennium? Sure, but it's still an exponential increase up to a point that at some point the planet will not be able to sustain the population.

What will our environment be like when the ice caps are gone. How about the residual effects of over population like our need for tapping into our natural gas by environmentally unfriendly "Fracking" which destroys nearby water tables. Increase in crime that comes with over population. Etc....
