Funny, I've always said that if you swap out the population of inner loop Houston and put them in Austin, you'd probably have the greatest small city in America. There's so much I miss about living in Houston, but so much I don't. I love living in the Hill Country, I love being outdoors, love having 5 lakes within a 30 minute drive, absolutely hate traffic, love being a 1 hour drive from downtown Austin (and New Braunfels, San Marcos, Fredericksburg, Kerrville, Llano, Lockhart, Albert, Wimberly, Luckenbach, Waering, Comfort, etc...). Enjoy visiting Austin, because there is always something interesting to do, but could never live there (or any city in TX) again. The influx of tourists and "foreigners" is really changing the vibe of the whole place, and the suburban sprawl on the W/NW side of town is disgusting but will only get worse. I will say the food scene in Austin has gotten exponentially better in the last 10 years, you just have to know where to go and not rely on hype. Fort Worth, the Corpus area, San Antone are all great places to visit as well. I miss Del Rio, Laredo, Roma and border town Tex/Mexico, maybe someday it'll be safe-ish again.
Wish I could have been around then. Hell, Deck, I miss the Austin of the '90's. Can't believe it's just about 20 years to the day since I moved from Houston to UT.
Lot's of 281ers who are Austin fanboys. I don't know anyone who has lived inside loop 610 that does not love it
Houston will have other new loop called Grand Parkway. To add that, we will have three loops. Houston will become the first city in US to have three loops. Amazing. Not any other city in Texas can do that.
you're an idiot. What the **** value does this have at all? Most of this isn't even in Harris County much less Houston. Where else have you lived? Been in Austin for 9 years after growing up in houston. It's a really amazing place to live. People keep comparing what each city has but they miss the big issue here. It's that all these things are within a 20 minute drive in Austin. Even Lake Travis is only 30 minutes away.

Austin is a great city, no doubt. I went there two times and I have to tell you that it's a beautiful place. It's mostly hills and lakes. It's an scenic town. I would like to visit there again. But I would still vote Houston as #1 best city because of jobs, foods, sports, hospitals, low cost of living, transportation system, etc. Austin came second.
I'm pretty fond of my hometown, Corpus Christi. Of all Texas towns with the best opportunity to become hip this would be it. Here is my list of the best big towns in Texas Houston Corpus Christi Austin Fort Worth Here is my list with the best small towns in Texas New Waverly Cut and Shoot Groom Crawford Happy Iola-Home of NBA Chris Anderson Mt Enterprise
an obvious lifestyle question so I'll take a city centrally located: Austin, but I wouldn't want to live "in" Austin...wouldn't want to drive through Austin...absolutely no interest in 6th street (although I almost became an extra in the movie DOA when filmed there). But would love the music scene and the hill country...and that satisfies a lot of hobbies.
