No way... He's just a 2nd-tiered star and he's barely one. Next season, I bet he'll never even make it in the All-stars. Good one-dimensional PGs are a dime and dozen.
I believe Wall would accept $80 million next summer as an RFA instead of signing the qualifying offer. But you are probably right the Wizards feel a little insecure about retaining him because their franchise has been such an utter failure in recent years. John Wall, Brad Beal and Otto Porter. It ain't much but that's the best the Wizards can do. Maybe Jan Vesely will break out (LOL!).
Unless his injury issue is still lingering, I don't know why this is a big deal. Morey basically did the same thing with Harden. Obviously one can debate how much better Harden projected to be last offseason compared to Wall right now. But if Washington views him as a franchise player, then he should get the super-max extension. I think Indy is going to get something similar done with George soon enough too. There are certainly advantages to having a super-max over RFA and matching. Specifically, the dreaded 4th year PO that players can negotiate when they're RFA can be annoying for teams. The 5-yr extension will ensure that doesn't happen. tl;dr version: If the Wizards feel like Wall is a max player, then this is a good manuver. And whatever his shortcomings, Wall does make his team play better.
I am so happy we have Harden and Dwight. Their play is WORTH much more than a "max-type" deal. Morey is a freaking genius!
A lot of players in the nba rely on their athleticism. The guy is young, his athleticism isn't going anywhere.
I don't know how much GM's get paid, but if I was the owner of the Wizards I would of thrown 75-100 Millions over 10 years for Morey.. It would have seriously helped that organization. GM Salaries are not counted towards the Cap right? So GM's can get paid any amount of money?
No owner is paying a gm $7.5-$10 million per year. That comes out of their own pocket, doesn't effect teams salary cap.
Let the guy play. He finally has good pieces around him last year and he showed us what he can do. He'll get even better this year. What the Wiz last year did in the 2nd half of the season is commendable. They could have easily tanked, folded, and just quit. But they didn't, and Wall was a major reason for that.
Would another team really give Wall the max? I seriously doubt it. I don't understand what the Wizards are thinking here
Im not sure why it's so hard to believe he's a max guy. Maybe he's not deserving yet, but he's only 22 and already putting up 18 and 8 in his third year, who does that? Considering he's shooting 80% from FT, you gotta believe his FG shooting can definitely improve. He hasn't been in a good team environment, since he was drafted. I'm sure multiple teams would throw the max at him right now.
No because according to Lin fans, John Wall isn't even better than Jeremy Lin, just an overrated chucker on a bad team.
Uh yes they would. Multiple teams would. 22 years old, still nowhere his ceiling and was a top 10 player in the 2nd half of last year. A lot in the NBA is based on potential. Remember, unlike most scoring PGs, Wall can get to the FT line at will.
John Wall still has ALL of the potential in the world and his on-court progression certainly has given no indication that he can't become a max-worthy player. Sure, if you take his combined work right now you wouldn't say that's a max player, but you have to step in the Wizards shoes as well. Who are you gonna convince to come play for the Wizards?? You have a potential top-5 PG in the NBA on your hands. You CAN'T afford to let this guy walk... you need him to be happy to ever have a chance of convincing other FA's to come play alongside him. Tbh, it sucks that the Wizards have to take such a gamble, but I think they're gonna have to bite the bullet on this one and assume he's gonna keep progressing.
David Kahn approves. The problem with your plan is that he's going to take a 3+1 (player option) contract and then if he becomes an All Star, you may have a Kevin Love situation on your hands. A player who's on a short deal, feels disrespected and has a lot of leverage.
It's not little either, if all 3 reach their potential. + they are going to have significant cap room starting next year (if they want to, depends on their team options). Below max, but enough for a good big man.
"If all 3 reach their potential" is a broad statement that doesn't mean much of anything. Define please.
