I didn't really like New spring. For some reason it didn't feel right. I'm looking forward to the New book of Wheel of time. Now i'm trading the last book of the black company. I like it alot. I just finished blood and bone from esslemont, but i'm not a big fan of esslemont. I will read his next book because it is in the malazan world. But If that wasn't the case i would stop trading esslemont. He just cannot write Nice characters in his books, and most plotlines do not make any sense
Been going on a massive philosophy binge, re-reading the 18th Brumaire - Marx is amazing and should be read by everyone, regardless of one's political opinion. Also trying to deal with the Republic and the Critique of Pure Reason, but those books are really, really difficult.
Fight through The Gunslinger (it's not that much). The overall series is very good. To me, (as with most books) The Shining was better than the movie. Also a sequel to The Shining will be out later this year. Different Seasons is a collection of 4 novellas, two of which, The Body (Stand By Me) and Shawshank Redemption were made into very good movies. My favorite story of the 4, however, was Apt Pupil. It was turned itno a mediocre movie. I think I have read every thing he has written.
Haven't posted in this thread in loooong time... Been reading a few sci-fi's. Earthfall - Stephen Knight Into the Black - Evan Currie The Expanse - Ryk Brown Now reading Leviathan Wake - James Corey
just got done reading that ESPN book...i had started a few years ago, never finished it, decided to start over. interesting...some good stories
Just finished Lone Star: A History of Texas And Texans. Took me a long time to get through, very slow read. I thought it was a little too complimentary of Texas at times, looking to attribute national trends to Texas. Also thought it glossed over some items as well that are pretty high on the list as far as Texas stories (Spindletop barely mentioned, Galveston being destroyed by the 1900 hurricane not even mentioned, little coverage after 1900, barely mentions the Bushes, etc.)
I've been on kind of a noire/hard-boiled kick lately. I've read The Thin Man, The Killer Inside Me, The Gay Falcon, and I'm currently reading The Postman Always Rings Twice.
How was Inferno? Didn't know Dan Brown came out with another book until I saw it at Target earlier... probably gonna go back and pick it up later. I'm assuming at worst it will still be good for some cheap thrills.
I enjoyed it. If you like his earlier stuff, then you should like this one. We are going to be in Italy next year and will spend a few days in Florence where some of this book takes place. Currently on Carrion Comfort from Dan Simmons.
I was so pissed that the first 400 or so pages were so !@#$%ing boring that I felt like Ahab just trying to finish the damn book. Most of the book is about whaling, only towards the end does it go into the whale chase. Will NOT read again.
GREAT book. Not overrated. I really enjoyed this one. This guy's proofreaders are a fiction writer's wet dream; a big group in NM including George R.R. Martin.
Just finished reading Earth Unaware and Earth Afire, by Orson Scott Card and Aaron Johnston. They are both in a new series about the First Formic War and a prequel to Ender's Game. Really excellent science fiction. Highly recommended if you like hard science fiction, human/aliens conflict, and just good old space opera. I do, so they are right up my alley.
YES! DO IT! I read it about 9 months ago. It is a fantastic book! Melville is a little hard to read and there are parts in the middle where he starts to go off on random whale stuff, but looking at the big picture is fantastic. It is encyclopedic about whaling and think about it, in 1851 people didnt know bleep about what a whale even looked like! Example, he will talk about the harpoon, then the following chapter has a bad ass story (the current story) about harpoons. MUST READ IMO.
See this is stupid in my opinion. What is the rush? It builds so much suspense. And watching Ahab grow more and more insane is sooo bad ass!
