Is there anything wrong with profiling, I don't even know if that's what it is. I am careful of my surroundings. I live in midtown so I am weary when walking my dogs at night and look out for things. that doesn't mean I hate black people and want to kill them. I think people are so afraid to be called a racist but **** it, better be safe then sorry. Honestly if I see someone look suspicious or looking sketchy, I take notice and more alert. Being called racist is the new being called gay
For both.... Why is it so hard for people to get this? Just because someone is suspicious doesn't mean you have to confront them. Just because someone is confronting you doesn't mean you have to attack. No one knows exactly what happened, but it doesn't matter any longer. You should always try to follow rules. Escalating tensions solves nothing. If you have to attack you are attacking with escape in mind.
wrd, was a tragedy there was a death but the first thing that came to my mind was Chapelle's skit, when keeping it real goes wrong
It's a repeating cycle for those in poverty. I think what Lilpun is and has been trying to say is that it isn't something exclusive to black people or something. Being a profile or stereotyping is vastly different from just being racist. I don't think it's that black and white. Being racist is thinking your race is better than others. So using those facts to try and suggest that black people are more violent would be closer to being racist. Stereotyping doesn't have to have anything to do with race. The guy with a suit, nice car, etc etc you'll think "Man he must be successful." The guy that wears black and make up you may stereotype as a emo...etc etc I think people stereotype and profile at their own risk. Sure that guy that dresses like a 'thug' could be a thug...or he could be a hardworking college kid and that's just how he chooses to dress. If people keep their stereotypes to themsevles then it's not a problem at all. After all we see it even in sports when people say "Oh that guy isn't athletic." when talking about a white player. I knew a Asian kid that could flat out ball, but when I took him to pick up games people wouldn't pick him. Because he wasn't black of course. But you see that's not harmful at all. He still gets to play he just gets picked last and he gets to prove that stereotype wrong. I think it's harmful when people in power are not hiring people because they have a name like "Lashonda." now that is harmful stereotyping.
That lifestyle has been around for decades now. It first garnered attention nationally with acts such as NWA and films like Boyz N the Hood which is the perfect example of what I've been saying. The lifestyle is and has been around but music and film allowed more people to see this lifestyle.
I'm reminded of the video of the New Black Panther party calling for a reward on the head of Zimmerman. He boasted that their efforts were attracting the attention of black athletes and entertainers.
Had not he done that.... until Trayvon took off? And then wasn't Zimmerman returning to his Safe Haven after, not finding Trayvon, Trayvon had doubled-back and surprise attacked him as Zimmerman approached his Safe Haven? That doesn't sound like fearful behavior to me.
You don't have to think that your race is better than another race to be racist. If you kill somebody for being a specific race, then you're still racist.
Is that the story that you want to believe? No. Never conclusive what happen in that last couple of mins. But you are asking, so you should already know you don't know. It's normal behavior to be in fear when you sense you are being followed (in particular in the late hour with little light) for no apparent reason.
Not getting into whether or not GZ is guilty or not, but let me ask a question for those of you who claim he's guilty of racial profiling. So you board a plane and while you're sitting there two Arab men, in their twenties, take the aisle seats two rows in front of you. What goes through your mind? Than you witness one of the Arab men go to the restroom at the front of the plane. He takes a long time, and when he leaves the restroom, he stops and looks up front towards the cockpit. He slowly walks back to his seat. Now what's going through your mind. If your thought process goes to, "could these two Arabs be terrorists", does that make you a racist and guilty of racially profiling? You start to pay closer attention to them during the flight, are you now a racist and racially profiling? Or just throw out are you a racist. Is this racial profiling? I think we all know the answer is yes, but who here wouldn't be thinking the same thing? Let's take it even further, the person watching these two young Arab men on the plane is an Arab man in his 50's. Is this arab man in his 50's racially profiling given these two young men are also Arab?
Racial profiling is technically discrimination by law enforcement. But I think you meant racial profiling in general term by the general population. Almost everyone profile (make judgement based on past memories and current beliefs) at all time. And Race is just one of the many factors when you profile. So, nearly everyone does racial profiling, even to their own race. It's in-grained in us and for good evolutionary reasons (that are out-dated btw because we can't evolve fast enough to keep up with fast changes in society). Racial profiling <> Racist. IMO, racist is conscious hatred or actions discriminating toward a race. Profiling is usually done unconsciously, though if you think hard about it, it will surface up to your conscious mind. The problem is... many people make a lot (I said most of their decision) based mostly on the "unconscious" part of their brain. So racial profiling, although not racist IMO, does lead to discrimination. Most are not even aware they are doing it until they genuinely look at some kind of statistics or when it's being pointed out to them. If you truly want to never profile, just don't ever make any judgement of anything before hand. It's an impossible tasks except for a very few. Policy by law enforcement or other agency that specifically call out race (e.g. screening at airport) is not what I'm talking about above - that to me is clear, reasoned out, policy that is racist.
It's the story the Det. Serino believed. It's the story that other investigators believed. It's the story that the jury believed. It's the story that Zimmerman told.
No one's claiming they're made up, but at the same time you can't deny these statistics are pretty racist too; more so when other racists are already referencing them, in which case you probably shouldn't is his point.
Totally ridiculous. It's hilarious, actually, when just a handful of pages back in this thread this same report was being used to point out the high rate of white-on-white crime. http://bbs.clutchfans.net/showpost.php?p=8145840&postcount=9367 But you didn't read that post and you didn't read the actual report, did you?
I hope this hasn't been posted. Good video (if you're a conservative). http://www.realclearpolitics.com/vid...zimmerman.html I can't believe this thread is still going. [/thread]
How about Zimmerman follow the neighborhood watch guidelines posted by the Sanford PD? He was the captain shouldn't he have known them? It specifically tells you not follow someone. Especially when you have a gun on you.
