Godfather II is not only the best gangster film (by far, though I really like Goodfellas), but it is also the best film about politics.
I don't know, but this is the greatest gangster film scene ever made. <iframe width="420" height="315" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/LmZfJuS4sVc?rel=0" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
So glad you mentioned that, easily top 5 w/ Godfather I/II, Goodfellas, Miller's Crossing, Lock-Stock/Snatch (can't make up my mind right now which is better), Scarface, Casino, etc....Do Pulp Fiction/LA Confidential/True Romance/Reservoir Dogs count as ganster movies? Honorable mention to the oldies: The Killing, White Heat, others I'm forgetting.
Ah hell, forgot one (totally different yet related topic). Which is the better movie: Menace II Society or Boyz in the Hood?
I consider a difference between gangsters and the mafia. The Godfather and Goodfellas are mafia to me. Scarface, Heat, and the Untouchables are more gangster. Godfather is the greatest of either for me.
Definitely Menace II Society. I found it to be probably one of the most gritty movies of its kind from that era.
Godfather I and II are really just one film. There really isn't a contest. People today take for granted that it's the template of the modern day mafia film. The thread should read, "what's the second greatest gangster film."
I'm actually a huge Mario Puzo fan. He wrote the Godfather as a sort of trash novel because his previous works weren't selling. Puzo didn't originate popular mob quotes, but he associated them with the mafia; quotes like "It's not personal, just business" or "Keep your friends close but keep your friend closer" even the word Godfather wasn't associated with the mafia until Mario's book published. Some of his characters remarkably resemble real life figures, but his official stance is "I made it all up."
