if you are going in for the action and and don't beat the plot or characters too much ( i think they are based on anime characters) then you will love it.

+1000. Not sure why FF gets a pass here. Pacific Rim is an action movie and a giant monster movie. Why would anyone expect deep Oscar-winning performances, writing and direction from a movie like this? Set your expectations accordingly. Mine were high, but on the fighting, CGI and nerd factor, and I wasn't disappointed.

Because they're not mutually exclusive. And you don't have to have Oscar winning writing in a movie like this. The writing and acting in Hellboy were perfect for the comic book movie it was.

When you guys say the acting was bad, you mean it looked uninspired? That could be definition of bad acting.

Really don't get it especially since the Transformers movies raked in the cash like it was going out of style....just don't get it.

Transformers was already an established brand and had Bay. Like him or not he's a known commodity for Summer blockbusters. Pacific Rim was supposed to do 40+ to be considered a good opening, and fell just short.

Maybe if they had cast [insert A-list actor] as the lead, it would have brought in more women. All I hope is that it performs well enough to get a sequel, cause it would be a shame if doesn't.

or if they used a name like Gundam or Evangelion. GDT said he didn't want any established origins, he wanted a universe of his own and that could have been the downfall.

I agree it's just frustrating to see this film underwhelm, really hope it has a strong shelf life and does killer business overseas.

    Ditto on the sequel.

Saw it, pretty good. No character development so when people inevitably die off, I aint even mad. The story was all over the place and just full of lulwuts, but that's not why we came and saw this movie, is it?

I would also like to echo others' sentiment about battles in the day time. Day time battles under a clear blue sky would be a nice change. Why is it always raining? Did they film in Seattle?

I feel like at this point in the thread, people shouldn't need spoilers anymore. But just to avoid some late comer's wrath...
Weird that in the end the whole army just lost their formidable leader and dude just lost his son... and aint nobody even mad. Not even the father seemed to be shaken up. But when pretty boy hero can't breath for 5 seconds, the whole bunker got all tense and silent.

I also would like to see the other Jaegers in action. They all seemed to have really awesome superpowers, while the Gypsy Danger only had that sword (although totally full of win) and that plasma megaman gun.

I bet Tony Stark could have made a much more badass Jaeger though.

This movie reminds me of a mixture of Gundam and Saint Seiya. I hope they make a sequel with better shaped monsters and an upgrade, more badass Jaegers. But knowing these studios, they'd probably ruin it by having some rapper involved and adding some hip hop soundtrack.

Agree, a full-on Sunshine battle would have been cool. Del Toro's style is pretty dark, though, and his roots are in horror, so that may have been part of it.

If there's any anime that it's similar to, it's Neon Genesis Evangelion. Giant monsters show up and earth has to build giant robots to beat them down. One of the great animes of all time, IMO.

I also would have loved to see more of the Jaegers and Kaiju dukeing it out. I think everyone wanted more of that. I'd say that the biggest disappointment was
Crimson Storm and Chernobyl Alpha getting beat down too quickly. I wanted to see more of them in action, at the very least
    .

There's a graphic novel prequel that should help in fleshing out the Jagers, but I'm hoping that this movie makes enough (projected 400m worldwide) that they make a true prequel.

Damn they made a graphic novel ALREADY? I would prefer a sequel since with prequels you kind of already know how it's all going to end. Although if they are planning a prequel, I assume it'll be something like the aliens finding another way of tunneling through to Earth and go all out in declaring war on mankind to avenge their fallen leaders in their home soil.

It'll be like thousands of aliens fighting an army of Jeguers... and taking the fight to space as well. And maybe the Jeguers could have better moves meaning quicker and more kung fu/samurai-like movements. Just like when pretty boy was dueling with the Japanese chick during the battle to find a mating partner.

Saw this for the second time yesterday, this time on IMAX 3D. Wow. 2500 tons of awesome. A much, much better experience than normal 3D.

This has some of the best kickass action sequences ever filmed. Hats off to ILM (for top notch CGI work), Ramin (for the pulsating score) and GDT for making this badass tribute to Mecha and Kaiju universe.

Couldn't they find some real Australians to play those two characters? Seriously, how hard is it to find Australian actors. Everyone in the theatre was cracking up at their terrible attempt at an accent.

    And also,
what the hell was the rest of the world doing during all of this? Building a freaking wall??

I didn't realize until the end of the movie they were father and son. They looked more like brothers honestly.

Anybody going into this movie looking for characterization or quality acting must have incredibly poor judgment. This movie is about giant robots fighting giant monsters and was marketed that way without any illusions. This was the most joyful movie experience I've had all summer because my basic ability to comprehend the premise of the movie and the unambiguous marketing of such movie told me exactly what kind of movie to expect. And it delivered 100% on those expectations. I feel bad for all the movie-goers hoping to see airtight scripting and insightful character development only to end up disappointed that all they got was a shallow action movie with amazing action.

I actually like the characterization in this film. Every cast member brought all their chops to the table, some of them brought a little too much in this already highly saturated film. Am I the only one that really enjoyed the comedic duo of the two scientist? Charlie Day was pretty funny in this movie.
