I'm all for gay rights but I also agree with OP from the point of view that we shouldnt sway ourselves as a society to discriminate against 'not gay' or 'indifferent to gay'
How can you generalize people by saying how gay people rub off on you? Gay people are as diverse as straight people. The only thing about gay people that's different is the fact that they are attracted to people of the same sex. So to say that all gay people rub someone the wrong way is generalizing. It's possible for a person to not personally support gay marriage, but to still believe that it should be allowed by law. After all the person who doesn't support it, doesn't have to attend gay weddings, or marry a person of the same sex. They don't have to do anything but support the idea that a group of people they don't agree with has the same rights they do.
I don't personally support smoking cigarettes. But it's allowed by law. I think it should be allowed by law. It's not something I would encourage anyone to do, or would want to do myself but I understand that people should have the right to do it even if I disagree with them. A person doesn't have to like gay marriage, but they shouldn't oppose it being allowed by law.
As you know its all preference and beliefs. Just because the law makes something legal does not make it right, look how many restrictions smoking has gotten put on it in the last couple of decades along side how many people are against it. I don't have to be for anything especially if i was raised with diff morals.
Like I said, people can dislike homosexuality if they want. But that doesn't mean there should be laws that prevent that one group of consenting adults from having the same rights as other people just because one group doesn't think it's right. You don't have to think something is right to believe it should still be legal. When you want what you believe to be the law for other people who believe differently then that's a problem. One groups beliefs shouldn't be law for all groups.
The thing is (and this only really applies to this topic) is that if you were thought by the book then you should know the large amount of people who will be against same sex. You just contradicted yourself with that last sentence, because this whole time you've repeated why everyone should be for same sex, but as you said one groups beliefs shouldn't be law for all groups so not everybody can be for it.
I'm not saying anyone should or shouldn't be for same sex marriage. I'm saying nobody should be against it being legal. As I said, it's possible to be against something yet still understanding that it should be legal. I'm against the KKK and things they stand for. I don't believe that organization should be illegal or not allowed to march and demonstrate. I disagree with the KKK, but I don't believe that the KKK should be illegal. If gay marriage is legal every single person who is against it now could still be against it then. The only difference is that the people who do believe in it and love people of the same sex could actually marry the person they love and have all the same rights. I guess what I'm saying is that you should be allowed to believe what you feel is right. That doesn't mean every other person should have to abide by that. They should be allowed to believe what they believe as well. If gay marriage is legal, you can still believe it's wrong and not support it. When you make something against the law because of what you believe, you're forcing everyone else to follow what you believe.
