Well as much as I was CERTAIN Asik and Lin (for salary purposes) were going to be dealt for a third star (and may still be), I can say that Having Howard and Asik on the team is a HUGE advantage against Miami, OKC, Chicago, and LAC. The Rockets will be able to beat up teams inside and will keep both Asik and Howard fresh. Also, the advantages that Memphis and San Antonio usually has inside are neutralized.

This third star stuff is getting ridiculous. You DO NOT need three stars to win a title. Look at how team's have done it in recent years. Did the big 3 in Miami play like a BIG 3? Did San Antonio have a big 3? Well, kind of with Duncan, Parker and Green. But who would call Green a "big" anything? Even Miami's run last year was more like a big two with Lebron and Wade and just a smattering of Bosh. Did Dallas have a big 3 when they one? I don't even recall who played big outside of Dirk in the finals.

History tells me that a big two (i.e. two max players) is a better combo than a big 3 (3 max players) because it allows you to fill out a better overall roster. Miami is the proof. Not enough balls to go around for 3 players to play like superstars.

I think we're good with Howard/Harden as our big two and surround them with quality like Parsons, Lin, Asik, etc.

Could we run into the same "poison pill" situation if we let him test the waters as a RFA, ala Lin and Asik? Knicks and Bulls couldn't/wouldn't resign them b/c of it.

Why the need for a 3rd star??

T-Jones and D-Mo will be good role players so why the need?

Think about the spurs and how they handled manu. The years prior, they cleared enough cap room to match an offer for manu. They had a 9m per value on him and they matched the offer denver put on the table. Unlike cleveland(boozer) and gsw (arenas) they were up against the cap. Just looking at the pay scales,I would agree that parson is gonna demand 7-10m per. The rockets probably would go cheap at pg post lin or even during lin to keep flexibility. When parson comes up for his deal, the rockets will be ready. He's one of the few 3 men who do everything well. I mean he'll probably never avg 20,but he will be 17ppg 6 rebs 5 asst and good defense. That's rare in this day for a small forward.

    Nets

According to the NY Times, the Nets will pay a record Luxury Tax of approximately $75 million! Probably not a sustainable business model.

    I'd say $7 million/year for 4 years or so.

The cost for a third S*T*A*R will be similar regardless of whomever is ultimately uh, assetedly attained; the question is who will be the anointed one (while clearly it was not Mr Smoove)?

To me it was pretty obvious we were in discussions to acquire Smith when the day after D12 chose to sign with us, Smith then finally signed with the Pistons. Why wait a week after FA started to make that decision? He apparently wanted more, whether in $$$ or years on contract, then we were comfortable giving him. I'm all for giving that money to Parsons, as a shooting, dynamic wing on this team, than for someone else to clog the paint in Smith. I love his defense, but on this team, we need someone to spread the floor a bit, hit the 15 footer, ala Aldridge or Love, who btw may become available by the all-star break. Let's also not forget that a rotation of Tjones, D-Mo, and/or Greg Smith might work out just fine afterall. Although knowing Morey, he will try to better this team any way possible, probably appeasing Asik's wish of being traded in the process...
